I always debarb my hooks. It makes releasing the fish so much quicker. I don't have a problem with fish releasing themselves, usually. Since the only thing I take are pictures, I want to get fish back in the water as fast as I can. I can net, photo, take the hook out, and flip the net over in 30 seconds without touching the fish. The fish is only out of the water for about 5 seconds while I snap pics. You can take the hook out underwater.
Catch and release! There's nothing more beautiful than watching a glorious water dragon fly away under the water and happy to be home. While still knowing, I GOT YOU!
Tough to beat catch-and-release, Brandon, though I've been reading lots more about it with smaller hooks compared to larger ones, as certain barbless hooks may increase damage. I am unsure how much the various Regal vises cost, thus am unsure of that comparison. I know that there are Stonfo Kaimen vises available on Ebay through a Stonfo retailer, and would be happy to give you any information you need on it (based on my own experiences). Thanks again! Tim

The Renzetti was a great vise for me, but I have a few others that I have purchased since...so little time, so many fly tying tools! Tim

I know many fly fishermen that choose not to do either, thus I hope that this video helps to give those a gentle prod towards debarbing hooks now, and eventually purchasing barbless in the future. TC
Thanks for sharing, Justin. Many tiers may have hundreds (or more) of hooks that were bought prior to barbless becoming more commonplace and affordable. If unsure of using vise jaws, go with a set of hemostats with flat teeth. I've used my vises to debarb hooks for over two decades, and will always recommend that people debarb prior to tying to ensure proper tempering of the hook. Thanks for the comment.
