Tied during this tutorial is the Griffith's Gnat, a pattern meant to represent many insects, though mainly (and specifically) a midge cluster. Created by one of the founders of Trout Unlimited, George Griffith, this fly is an excellent pattern to carry in the spring and summer. Featured in this tutorial are the D101BL hooks by Allen Fly Fishing (www.allenflyfishing.com/d101bl.... Aside from the original pattern, this video also features a high-visibility Griffith's Gnat, plus a number of other variations tied with ostrich herl.

Enjoying this video as always, Tim! I am just beginning to attempt dry flies, I'm apparently a brute when it comes to the delicate materials lol! Seemed like this pattern would be a good one to start. I've tied up about 10 so far, all fishable I'm sure, but the last two or three are really starting to look presentable! Thanks for the video!

+Charlie Wilson Ha ha, don't feel bad, Charlie! I was definitely rough on some feathers over the years, and it gets better...trust me. Keep on tying, and if you're not happy with the fly, immediately take a razor blade to it and retie. Ensure that every fly placed in your box is one you'll fish, or else it will be in the box way too long. If you need anything related to dry flies, be sure to let me know, and thanks for commenting. Tim

Hey Tim, I have about twenty colors of Peacock herl bleached and dyed. I got it by asking a seller on ebay to buy the damaged feathers that they just couldn't sell for the purpose they list their feathers. I got them for .45 cents a piece and bought all they had for damaged feathers. I have enough color variations to last a lifetime. I use them in between materials on my caddis pupa patterns, reinforced with thread and even wire in a dubbing brush. All the best, Sean

When is the best time of year to fish there?
@gregorydeangelis5036

Love the hi-vis... Since you don't counter wrap the hackle...why don't you counter wrap the tag? I would think it would make the hackle and herl more secure?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 5 лет назад
Thanks for the comment, Gregory, and this pattern has proved rather resilient for me over the years (the video is over six years old!). With that said, your idea will only improve the durability, though I would prefer to wrap them the same way as thread, then counter wrap with a piece of tippet. Great suggestion, and I appreciate you bringing this to my attention! Also, feel free to shoot me an email (tcammisa@gmail.com) and I'll add you to my email updates for more tips; thanks! Tim, Nice Tutorial! Do you ever tie this fly with dubbing other than peacock ? I have seen some ice dub bodies with traditional grizzly and wanted to hear your expert opinion... As a beginner in this I tie and use the Griffiths more than I care to admit..Thanks
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 10 лет назад
Thanks for the email, Ken, and I'm no expert! I have tied the Griffith's Gnat with dubbing for the body, and done well on light colors (especially cream and light gray). This is an excellent fly, as it sounds like you know, thus don't be afraid to experiment and see where it takes you! I appreciate the kind comments, and wish you luck. Tim

Could a Greenwell's Glory version of this be tied please?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 7 лет назад
What do you mean, Dewi? The Greenwell's Glory is typically a wet fly with significant wing and I believe is intended to represent a different type of pattern that the Griffith's Gnat. Any additional information would be helpful and feel free to email: tcammisa@gmail.com Thanks, Tim

I like tying Greenwell spiders as I have difficulty matching left and right wings with each other. I love experimenting and tying new patterns of my own ideas. I absolutely hate stereotyping in flytying Tim, flytying should evolve. For example, why use seals fur to tie a Mallard & Claret body? When was the last time you sat at your vice and tied up your own ideas irrespective of if they work or not?

Great thoughts, Dewi, and we need more people like you pushing the limits of fly tying!

Thank you Tim. Have you heard of the Mallard & Claret? If so, can you create a Mallard & Claret spider? I've never ever seen one, as I mentioned I have trouble with wings.
