I think it is really great that the videos you put out promote fly tying and possibly a lot of people who watch them are not yet fly tyers but may well be in the near future. It is great that you shed a little #light on the subject as well as providing new ideas for those that have been tying for a while either for a short or a long time and as my eyes are older than I would like they seem to need more #light than they used to. Thanks for the enjoyment in watching.

Good Afternoon Sir Matt, cool review, I would prefer something like that if I'm at a camp site after a great day fishing and you need more of the flies that are getting hit. At home I bought an LED light with a clamp that clamps to my roll top desk fly tying station I love it. Good luck Gents and Ladie fly tiers.

I own a similar light and it never gets used. I find it always in the way and it doesn't add much light to my desk or vise. I use two clamp on style lamps that do a great job for me. I am thinking of mounting my UV light in the clamp as I "lose" it on the mess of my desk. Lol Thanks for the review Matt

The timing of this video is kind of amusing. I was actually sitting here checking articles on proper vice height, lighting and chair height. My lighting is great, as I have it setup for my RC plane building and maintenance. I’m working on good vice height for comfortable posture to go along with my trifocals. Looking for that perfect balance. Then I seen this video posting appear. So I hope someone needing a light problem corrected wins this light. Thanks Matt for sharing this product review. Have a great day.

I had one of these lights and it worked well for me. About 8 hours on three AAA batteries and the light is sufficient enough for smaller flys. Rigged a new led on the adjoining bench I use and stopped using this one. It does work and would be a great addition to anyone's bench. Good review.

Not exactly a very original thought by me but LEDs sure are a game-changer, even reaching into our small world of fly tying. Light without the heat of incandescents or the flicker you can get with flourescents.The light you demo wouldn't work for me because I dislike attaching stuff to my vise stem but I don't doubt you'd get used to it and for some who dont have my phobia it could be ideal. I use a clamp-mount desk LED light of no particular distinction that I like, though as with any such light it needs to be adjusted occasionally to stay clear of the bobbin when winding. An overhead light, such as you mention, that floods the whole work area from above is probably ideal.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
Absolutely right Peter. Maybe I should do a video of some DIY lighting setups. I really like mine and it's so simple... just a utility light from Home Depot, one of those shiny metal half conical things, but I use a standard size LED bulb, at the color temperature I like best. I have it hanging from my ceiling by its own cord. The whole thing probably cost less than $10. :-)

Definitely would Felipe! Just for taking pictures, I found a few battery powered LED lights at a hardware store that I can just point at the fly to really light it up for still photos. That's a cheap solution that works well for me. :-)

#light MY only suggestion for that light is maybe to use rechargeable batteries. It's cheaper and more environmentally sensitive, or should that be sustainable. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.
@edherrmann182
@edherrmann182 2 года назад
As an extra reply, I make the suggestion that an ideal lighting and lens magnification light is designed with a fly tier in mind. It must be designed to be clear of working area, is adjustable, has florescent or new type of LED light. It also should be in both electric and portable battery light, (maybe rechargeable) and it must be affordable. Someone that designs that will capture a couple different market uses besides fly tying. As new vices and tying materials continue to surface and grow, someone left out an important part to this great skill and experience.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
I think a rechargeable would be a great option! Hareline does have a higher-end light they make but I've never tried it out. And it doesn't look like it is chargeable. Maybe I'll give it a look anyway.

Interesting. I am on the lookout for a tying light but would prefer one that is not mounted on my vise. This one would have been useful for our camp to replace the flashlight strung from a beam over my tying table, but we just had electricity installed. I would welcome further light reviews, since I expect I will need to replace my current desk light (puts out a lot of heat) & want the advantage of a cooler & more environmentally friendly full-spectrum LED light. However, the house is cold today, so I’m going to warm up under my light & tie some flies. If anyone has an LED light that makes them happy, please let us know through Matt.

Thanks Matt. One of the bigs pros of a battery light is you don’t need electricity which when your traveling you often don’t have ideal conditions.. I use a combination electric light and magnifying lens both of which are independently attached to a heavy metal base with a recessed area with a magnet. It’s pretty handy but it isn’t a travel #light

That's actually a pretty good idea Chip. And I'll bet sewers (people who sew, not where sewage goes) are a pretty thrifty bunch as well. I appreciate you covering lighting on the fly tying Vice area. Currently I use two lights to do the job, but they take up valuable space on my tying desk. Many lights don’t have enough reach to get out of the working space of the Vice, so they need to be spaced away and shine towards the work area. This isn’t always ideal. I like the idea of a light directly above that brightens the tying area. I have disposed of two lights that couldn’t be adapted for this need, including one with a magnifying lens. I found the lens to be valuable but could not find one that could be adjusted in such a way that works and isn’t in your way. #light

FYI: The arm is called a boom. And, you're probably right about the boom not being super durable. I worked as a recording engineer for a while and this style of boom was always problematic. For this style to be durable you want a telescoping boom. It is a good idea though. Find a short telescoping boom and grab a large barrel microphone clip and you're good to go.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад

That looks like a winner. I might have to get one of those. The light I have is ok but it takes up more room than I like. It is one with the magnifying glass that I rarely use, and the neck although adjustable is cumbersome. The switch also is faulty and goes off occasionally on its own.

#light. I enjoyed the review. Right in my price range. Free would be better. Thanks Matt!

Appreciate ya Matt! This would definitely be better than tying with one hand and holding a light in another lol #Light

#Light is also an important tool, especially when you're older. I recently got a new Rx for my glasses, it's like seeing in Hi Def! I have a plug in goose neck clamp-on lamp that I use with a very "hot" incandescent 60 W bulb, it's a GE "natural" light bulb. The bulb glass is tinted blue, I don't notice the difference. Nothing beats natural light but I liked CFL for a cooler light that uses less wattage, but the light "color" quality varies with the brand. Plus I've read CFLs produce ultra violet, not that good for the eyes I take it. True or not, I don't know. Now LED is the way to go, nice bright, little to no heat white light. I also like a white or light colored cardboard backdrop behind my vise. Two wooden clothes pins, one on each bottom corner, parallel to the table and the bottom of the backdrop holds it up. I believe you talked about lighting and backdrops in a previous video. Matt you mentioned a conical lamp you hang above your table. You gave me an idea for the reflector "brood" lamps we use when we have a litter of pups. I maybe able to rig something up. BTW, you mentioned frustration with notification, you posted this review on the 14th, I got the notification today the 15th, about 12 hours later :o/ Good review Matt, this lamp has potential. many thanks.

Yep, I agree Joe; the right lighting can make tying much easier. Tying for a few hours from the overhead light in a hotel actually tires me out pretty quickly. Speaking of a brooder light, that's exactly what I use. I took one out of my chicken brooder and took the clamp off and just hang it from it's own cord. I use a 75W equivalent LED in a cool color (5,000K). I experimented with different color temps, which makes more of a difference when filming than just tying. A warmer light, maybe 2,700K will make my fingers look really orange which looks terrible! So this is what I use: amzn.to/3wPbGdW And I added a 5-junction remote so I have easy access to turn all my lighting on and off. If you've got a permanent bench with multiple lights, check out something like this: amzn.to/3wRh93O It's about the most convenient thing I've done for my bench!
