In this fly tying video, I discuss a new travel vise, the Stonfo Airone. The vise is made of quality components and can definitely hold a variety of hook sizes, as I show in the video.
Thanks for viewing this RU-vid fly tying tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfea...
As mentioned in the video, I'd love to hear your thoughts about this vise, plus feel free to leave additional thoughts, questions, or comments on this RU-vid page, or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com
Fly fishing for beginners can be difficult at first, thus be sure to stick with it and ask others for advice. it's perfect! I don't know what you're talking about but I find it extremely stable! I have tied around 200 flies so far and no fault has been found yet. I like it more than the Stonfo Elite that I tried (we are not talking about true rotary). Thank you Tim for your video that contributed to the purchase of this vice. It's just perfect, not necessarily that travel vice but as everyday vice. i am not pro fly tyer

Thanks for the comments, Liv, and this is definitely one I prefer to use while traveling because of its size/weight. The rocking definitely occurs for me when tying longer patterns, such as streamers, but it's something that gets outweighed (in my opinion) due to the travel flexibility the Airone offers. I'm really glad you enjoy yours, and thanks for taking a moment to share your thoughts! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Tim, totally agree with you about the plastic base. I had a Regal Bronze Pedestal travel vise, and that heavy base kept it from being a good travel base. I sold that and instead us a standard c clamp Regal; amazing how much difference in weight. This Stonfo looks well-made and well thought-out.

Glad we're on the same page, Richard, and this is a great vise to travel with. As I mentioned in the video, the base is still not "ideal," but I understand its design. Thanks for taking a moment to comment! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Very nice vise. This is really cool but I think expensive for a travel vise. All the best, Sean

All things considered it is a good vise. It is expensive and though a travel vise, I also want stability with a heavier base. I personally like my bases as heavy as possible. The shape, and size makes it easy to travel for sure. It is a good design for traveling overall. If I could upgrade anything, it would be a heavier more stable base. Happy tying to all.

Totally agree, Dan, and thanks for sharing. I was just tying on this vise the other day and that's the main area I'd want improved in the future. Thanks for taking the time to comment and I look forward to your thoughts on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

If you want a heavy base why buy a travel vise? By design its light. Its meant to be light. Dont buy a light vise if you want a heavy one and then complain that its light. Just buy a c-clamp

Thanks, Robert, and we are getting so close to the best fishing of the year...at least I hope! There has been a lot of snow and rain recently, thus many of the streams are high and muddy. Maybe time to fish Squirmy Wormies!! :-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I have used this vise for a few months. While I like the jaws and adjustments a lot, my own view is that the base is too light, and tying flies that require more thread pressure or doing things like spinning the bobbin to twist or untwist the thread can be problematic. I’m considering gluing some lead or the like inside the base to increase its weight. Would love to hear others thoughts or solutions
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 6 лет назад
Thanks for the thoughts, and yours are similar with a few others. I can definitely see the need for additional weight, though as I mentioned in the video, the counter is that it's a travel vise (hence weight is a consideration). Like you, I look forward to hearing from others, and plan on tying on this more extensively over the next year. Thanks again for taking a moment to comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Why not just get a clamp and clamp it to the table you are working on. That way it will not change the weight for travel and will be secure when tying heavier flies that require a stable vise. All the best, Sean
@leighs522
@leighs522 6 лет назад
Kinda defeats the purpose of a travel vise if you need a clamp. 90% of the time when I tie flies while on the road, I need a pedestal vise because there is no table to which one can clamp a vise, or use a clamp to hold the pedestal. If I knew I had a desk or other surface that would allow me to clamp a vise, I'd just bring a clamp vise along, as those are much lighter than any pedestal vise could ever be, and much more secure.

Definitely an option, Sean, though adding another piece may be undesirable or tricky to do depending on where you're tying. Thanks for the comment and thoughts with this one. Tim

I know what you mean regarding pedastal versus clamp, and I tend to prefer pedastal vises, too. For the majority of patterns I tie, the Airone meets my needs and maintains its slim size. I'd love to hear from others regarding thoughts, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment, Leigh. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I can attest to this, they are fantastic! I received my Elite (and love it) 4 business days after ordering. It was $55.00 less than any other price I found and the shipping cost me a whopping $19.99. From Poland to southern Utah in 4 days!

Nice review Tim. What materials do you carry when to travel?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 5 лет назад
Thanks, Christian, and that really depends on the trip. I have a small duffel bag that I use for fly tying, and it's loaded to the max when on a trip. I plan on making a video of this sometime, but the bag is constantly changing, hence why I have yet to do it. Someday! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Tim, have you used this vise enough to give an opinion? I am thinking of picking this up for when I travel to teach tying at PHW, and when I am traveling for work. For reference, I tie a lot more bigger bugs, sizes 10-3/0. Thanks!

Thanks for checking, Bryan, and for lengthier feedback, shoot me an email: tcammisa@gmail.com In short, this is the vise I use to travel due its minimal weight and size. Also, the jaws are excellent, and hold a great range of hooks. On the downside, the base is very lightweight and this vise does rock a bit. That can be fixed by adding weight(s) underneath, though I've chosen against it to keep down weight. Knowing you'll be tying larger patterns, especially for demonstration purposes, I'm unsure if this would work well, unless you have a way to ensure the base stays firm to the table. I hope that helps, and feel free to shoot me an email for more thoughts. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

As a first vice, I'm thinking about getting the Stonfo Airone Travel Vise or the Renzetti Traveler 2000 Vise. I love the Stonfo workmanship. Any thoughts?

That's a tough decision, but it depends on what you're trying to get out of the vise. Will you be traveling with it? Send me an email and I'd love to help with your selection: tcammisa@gmail.com

Not that I know of, Ron, as I saw it for sale via some fly shops in the US. If you decide to purchase the Airone, let me know your thoughts after you've tied on it for a few months. Thanks for taking a moment to comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
