This is probably the most unique mayfly ever...the muddler head...caddis wing and beautiful segmented body all together...wow...some thought went into this...and most important...I think I can tie it in a size 12! I think it would be an awesome soft hackle flie too with the extended body and a nice spider hackle from a grizzly... I've been tying a similar fly in hand with elk body...this curved hook technique is something else... thanks

This really is an Ord Clarke masterclass. Anyone who has tried to tie this pattern will know - it's quite an ask. But, it can be done, and the finished flys work. I've tied this down to #12, but it's better to start with #10 or even #8 just to get used to the fiddly nature of the pattern. If ever you make a really perfect one and then (like me) put it half way up a tree on your back cast, you feel like sawing the tree down to retrieve it (I didn't).

Fantastic tutorial yet again. I've been looking for a tutorial on tying an Uffe's Killer. Nobody appears to have tied this on RU-vid? It appears to be a mayfly pattern like this and I believe it originated in Norway as I can only find it in Norwegian? I think you'd be able to nail the tye Barry?

Hi Russell, thanks. Well, its surprisingly robust with tails and body hold up extremely well. Tie a few up and give them a go, I'm pretty sure that you won't be disappointed. Good luck.

Hi Alex, it lies flat on the surface, the deer hair tail is very buoyant.

Fantastic, thanks for sharing. What are your preferences/recommendations on tying vises?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 7 лет назад
Hi Mark, and thanks. I have a good range of vices that I use for different hook sizes and styles. It all depends on what you require of a vice, what size of hooks, how many flies you tie, do you need full rotary... theres a whole load of questions to be asked and of course what kind of budget you have?
@markedwards5771

Beautiful job. I’ve been watching you for a few years now and I’m impressed with your many uses of deer hair. I just purchased your book and can’t wait. Question. Will a body hold up with just the thread and the moose hairs. Have you tried it for smaller bodies. I wonder if it would not collapse with just the thread and hair. Thanks and tight lines.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Stan, thanks. Yes they hold up pretty well, I'v been tying detached bodies with deer hair for years now and they work.

Barry, is dyneema thread only sold in the UK? I cannot find it anywhere in America. I have found some on eBay once but they wanted 12.00 U.S.A for one spool. I know that is an extravagant price. I do love the thread as I see you can use it for many flies and it appears to be very strong. Any suggestions? Great fly, thanks for sharing. All the best, Sean
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 7 лет назад
Hi Sean, It was very expensive when it first arrived on the market because it had to be spooled by hand because it broke the spooling machines, but now its cheaper. As I have said Veniard now sell true DYNEEMA and if you contact them they will tell you who is stocking it.

Thanks Barry. I find it extremely difficult to separate the fibers in the tale from the bunch. Is there a trick for this ? Also, I prefer to use roe deer instead of deer as it seems softer and easier to handle. Do you see any odd with this ? Thank you so much for being such a mentor to all of us

Hi Greg, thanks so pleased that they help. No I use a razor blade holder that you can adjust the curve of the blade in. There are several on the market but the one I have found best is made by STONFO.

Hi, I can't get a tail off the needle. What am I doing wrong?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Doc, you are attaching your tying thread too tight to the needle. The initial wraps don't need to be super tight. Just attach the deer hair to the needle and then once you start the body segmenting you can tighten up a little. Let me know how you get on. Good luck.
