Barry, thanks for the fascinating tying lesson. The use of tape,lighter, and a handful of tips are very helpful for my spinning.

I am from New Brunswick, Canada where the green machine originated and it is very interesting to see how you tie this: here we usually tie with 6/0 black thread, the florescent green butt we typically tie in use nylon floss, the red is usually red floss and there is no tail. If a green machine has a glitter tail it is known as a "glitter bug" and could be any color body. I really enjoy the way you tie it and may do this going forward!

Hi Chad, good to hear from you and thanks.This particular pattern I got from the late Terry Griffiths in the UK who was aquatinted with the originator, but patterns change and are tied differently, so I can't be sure if its the original but I can say that it works.

Your deer hair bodies are always so nicely done. They seem to be very consistent in their density which probably translates to them fishing well.. Thanks again, sir.

A very productive pattern on the West Coast of BC. I might add it floats like a cork and does a splendid job of disturbing the surface as it is stripped. This is a top shelf quality tie!

Interesting, here we use white deer hair dyed green not brown dyed green! The fly is mostly tied the same but the colour of the body is dramatically different! Your version would not be recognized as a green machine bug here by most Salmon fishers. The green tint on your version is not very notable but should certainly be effective. The deer hair body You made is cigar shaped on all sides, I make my bugs/ bombers with a flat bottom. I also leave a mono tag at the tail that I counter wind thru the palmered body to make it even stronger. Not saying mine is better but just made a little differently. I do like your razor blade cutter and will try and get one if I can. The painters tape idea is a good one! I do enjoy your videos! Tight lines!

Hi Mike, yeah that unfortunately is my coloured blindness, I have red green difference, so when I open a box with 300 pieces of dyed deer hair in it and try to find the right green... I actually take photos of materials with my phone and send them to my at work and ask what colour it is! That being said I do tie them in many different colours with the same effect when fishing. I'v never done these or bombers with a flat bottom, this would perhaps make them sit deeper in the surface? As for the mono, I never use it. I use a extra large hackle that I can pull deep down into the deer hair, I have had a couple break under fishing but its not often. The razor blade trimmer is a great tool and its from STONFO in Italy.

oddly enough, I just received my blade holder from Stonfo this morning. a great tool indeed, I can't wait until tomorrow to do my muddlers and try this great Green machine. Thank you
@Thefeatherbender

Hi Hugo, when loading your blades remember to carefully wipe off the grease from the blade and pay attention to the blade number. The blades are numbered 1-4 if you start with 1 and when it stops cutting so well turn it to blade 2... This way you will get more out of your blades. You should also buy 'Derby' blades on eBay they are cheap and sharp. Good luck with it.

Really I like that pattern. I live in Argentina and I think that fly can work in the Rio Grande for the sea run brown trouts. Congratulations for this lesson. I need to get the blade holder. Best regards Rudy.

Very cool but I’m puzzled by what it represents in the food chain? It looks like nothing I’ve ever see here in the USA Pacific Northwest
@hugopoirier7746
@hugopoirier7746 4 года назад
based on some quick research seem to be imitating : the genus Skwala (Short-winged Springflies) of the Perlodidae family is represented by three species in North America, Skwala americana, the identical looking Skwala curvata and Skwala compacta.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Jeff, like the bomber series of flies I don't believe that they represent anything in particular. They are surface lures that you skate on or just under the surface at varying speeds. This attracts the attention of the fish that rise to it.

Very neat and clear instructions , but I have never used a green machine before, is this a type of dry fly? And how do you use it . Thanks
@Thefeatherbender

Hi Timmy, its a surface lure that you skate on top, the fish can't leave it alone!

Interesting variant but not a Green Machine. The Green Machine is tied with a green body to mimic the large green grasshoppers we get here in New Brunswick in summer. I knew the originator of this pattern.

so happy to see the way you make it, it is one of the first fly a make at my beginning, i still beginner but i learn so much with all your video. I do not fish salmon but i have a lot of succes with bass and small pike with that fly. Has you suggested me once i will try again using GSP Thread like for my favorite muddler. There is so many GSP tread on the market, any suggestion? (Wapsi, UTC, VEEVUS etc, 70, 100 etc)
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Hugo, thanks. It makes a great difference to use Dyneema or GSP thread, but you must remember to spin your bobbin anti-clockwise so you don't cut the deer hair when you tighten. I use 70, 120 & 200 all for different jobs and fly sizes. I use only Dyneema but I guess Veeveus is good.

@@Thefeatherbender Many thanks sir, i realy appreciate the fact that you always respond poeple all the time. That said alot to me. You are so right about spinning the bobbin, I have that problem many time. I tought that it was my deer hair the problem. Still practicing on a daily basis, I have so many Muddler on the bench, but still, has you said, practice, practice & more practice. Have a Good Week end.

Hello, I am French and I am watching your editing videos with great interest. I have two questions to ask about this model: - Is it a dry fly or a wet fly, or a streamer? - what is the reference of your razor blade holder and where can we get it? Are there several sizes? Thank you for your info and bravo for your editing which helps me a lot to progress. Greetings

Hi Yves, merci! This is a dry or semi dry attractor pattern that you skate across the surface. The razor blade holder is made by STONFO in Italy. There is only one size that fits old fashioned razor blades. Pleased to know that the videos help you, if you wish to learn more, may I also suggest: www.editionsdugerfaut.com/produit/monter-des-mouches-comme-un-pro/

Hi BOC: Really cool Bomber style. Can you expand on purpose of flaming deer hair? Example, aesthetics or function. Thanks
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Ciao Enzo, grazie. The burning does a couple of things. It smooths out any small mistakes in the trimming and it tightens the deer hair and makes it more compact.
