In this video, we cover several different tips for tying with Craft Fur. Tying flies with Craft Fur is one of my favorite things to do! Craft fur offers some very different perks compared to it's natural counterparts (marabou, bucktail, etc) and comes in a lot of different colors.

Mr. Wise, I'm an old geezer who has been tying for around 60 years now and have been watching your channel since it started. Let me say that I don't have any credibility about tying other than I've been around for so long! That being said, let me say that I think that You and your Buddies F'n ROCK!!!! I've learned more about building streamers watching you than I have learning and experimenting on my own for many years! So God bless you and your other cohorts for teaching this old dog some new tricks!!! Keep on doin what your doin!! Sincerely, Snook Spanker (Down on Fla's Nature Coast)

Brian first thing I want to say is Thanks .I have been a fly fisherman and tier for years. I, like everyone else use you-tube as a vessel to learn the art of fly tieing . Of all the channels out there there is not one, in my opinion that offers what you do. You are the bomb. I just found your channel and have learned more in the time it has taken to watch your how to videos,than I have watching any other site. The content is far above anyone else out there. Keep it up, Tight lines & Thanks again Dennis from Ontario Canada

I just started tying and like you expressed. When it gets wet it gets thin. I like that and it’s easy to tie with for beach patterns and I appreciate tying sliders or snook muddler variations. I feel fur really does the trick as you stated once you start you don’t want to stop.

Thanks Brian! I prefer the built-in taper of natural materials like bucktail but have been experimenting with craftfur and like it a lot. The thing that I discovered was that I had to be careful not to remove too much of the under fur as the amount underfur shapes and controls the profile of the wing - my first craftfur streamers were real skinny when wet :) Like you, I use the UV resin as a "styling gel" - it is a great way to make thin, high profile "sunfish" streamers that the local bass are very fond of. Cheers!

Right, there is a fine line between not too much underfur, and not enough.

I came up with the craft fur zonked idea before seeing your video and they other guys aswell. So I have my own glue to reinforce the strips. Fabritac fabric adhesive is great if you spread it into the backing. Ill cover the backing of a good size craft fur mat, then spread the glue into the backing. This makes for a nearly indestructble fly/jig. Pike hammer hard, and they've NEVER fallen apart

Awesome video thank you! Do you have a purpose for the underfur? I hate wasting so much of it and was curious if you’ve found a reason to keep it. Thank you. Sorry if I missed this in the video.
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 2 года назад
You 'can' use it as dubbing. Also, if you use some of the longer fibers with the underfur, you can use them in a dubbing brush.

Hi Brian. Great video as usual. Question, on the knuckle head , what does the foam do for the fly. It’s very interesting just wondering what action it puts on the fly. Thanks for the help
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 3 года назад
So, the foam on the Knucklehead forces the fly to keel. If a fly falls on it's side, it will not react to every single cross-current you rip it across---the Knucklehead will "right" itself WAY quicker with the keel weight of the hook and the slight buoyancy of the foam in the head so it reacts to cross-currents really, really well. Something all swim-flies should do.

Brian, is there any way you can see how many times I watch a video? I love this series, I love coming back and each time seeing a new trick I can use. One trick you have left off is that keeping a handheld vacuum at the bench is imperative when craft fur.

After making those craft fur zonkers, you could also clamp those using a CDC or Pettitjean clamp, then make a great collar or head using a dubbing noodle technique. Then sit back and enjoy some of grandpa's cough syrup.

Brian, I know this was not the point of the video per say, but I was curious as to the size of that chartreuse pattern to quickly whipped out. Lol Just hook size brush size, and Eye size. Streamers are quite new to me esp the bulkhead and craft fur styles and am looking to see your sizing proportions. That looks to be about the size im am hunting for and can scale up or down on my won probably from this base. Loooooove all the vidoes. so much help and great patterns. Congrats on the knucklehead. Im going to be giving that one a go as well!!

I like this video. But i want to point out something. Baitfish flies look skinny when they're wet and out of the water. Under water, they bulk out again almost like when they're completely dry and out of the water. Show the baitfish under water and you'll see it's not as bad. When fly tyers wet their flies then hold them up to the camera, that's not what they'll look like under water. I've seen this a lot. Tightlinevideo shows how to tie Lefty's deceiver and his video demonstrates this effect well. It does how itlooks wet out of the water then how it looks in the water being fished. Big difference. Check it out.
