When wrapping wire to add weight to bead head flies, having a smooth underbody is a critical element to a nice looking and durable fly. Using a technique that delivers this smooth underbody while generating minimal waste is very important to us a fly tyers. The main technique that most people do backwards is the actual direction that we wrap the wire. Make sure when you hold the tag end of the wire and begin wrapping with the spool in you hand that you are wrapping in the opposite direction as you would normally wrap your thread. This will allow you to create a nice thread ramp up to the lead wraps without having your thread catch on your end of the wire. Typically the broken end of the wire is pointing in the opposite direction of your thread and this is why the thread will prematurely split or go in between the wire wraps. Wrapping the wire in the opposite direction of your thread allows the broken end to face in the same direction of the way your thread is wrapping, thus creating less obstruction for the thread.
Thank you for watching and as always, let us know if you have any questions!
Please join us live on Wednesday nights at 9:00 eastern time for Whip Finish Wednesday as we tie up a different fly or go over various techniques each week. We will see you then!

That's a great tip. I've been doing it wrong this whole time. Thanks for sharing.

I am positive that the way you were doing it worked just fine. When I started wrapping in the opposite direction I was very happy with how much easier it was. It's just a very minor tweak. I hope it helps!

I am still pretty new to fly tying and have no one to guide me in person. John and Katie provide me with a fantastic resource that allows me to explore different methods to develop my own techniques an style. I do have lots of waste but due to my many mistakes. Keep up the great work John and Katie. You greatly inspire me.

Katie just said, "Awwww, Ken is so nice!" We all find our own methods that work best for our individual tying styles. This comes from experimentation and tying subpar flies. I know I have taken a razor to plenty of flies! The fact that we all have the opportunity to share the techniques and our love for fly tying/ fly fishing is such an amazing opportunity! It's tyers like you (down in Australia too) that keep us going each week. We both really appreciate your support and very kind words! We are all in this to have fun and put smiles on our faces. You put a smile on ours!!

I start with a few wraps of thread and then put the wire in the slot and put a few more wraps of thread and then start wrapping the wire down the shank and then capture it with a few tight wraps and break the wire off and create the thread taper. They come out nice that way.
@demuthflyfishing
@demuthflyfishing Год назад
I have seen Tim Flagler use that technique and it's a great way to have no waste. I don't get a very tight fit between the bead and wire using this technique though. However, the gap isn't too big and is easily filled in with thread wraps. Also, when I break the wire off after I have captured it with my thread, it's a little more difficult to create a uniform taper between the hook shank and the wire. These are all very minor details though, you definitely have a good technique and it produces great flies!

Little things often add up to better looking and more durable flies. I've done it the other way for years but I'm going to give it a go because I ofter end up fighting that little nub from the end of the wire. Probably waste less wire doing this to. I'll try this and let you know.

What is the explanation of the requirement for wire behind a bead as shown here? I've seen many videos that talk about benefits of "securing the bead", "extra weight" or suchlike; surely once the fly is tied up to the bead it will be secured by the preceding materials and extra weight could be achieved by a bigger bead?
@demuthflyfishing
@demuthflyfishing Год назад
Personally, I don't use the weight to center the bead unless it's a much bigger hook with a countersunk bead or a conehead. I use the wire to add weight to the fly. You could just go with a bigger bead, but that changes the overall profile and sometimes can impede the hook gap. Some flies don't have room for the wire and I just use the bead, but on a lot of dubbed flies there us enough room underneath to add wire without changing the profile. Long story short, I'll use the wire to add weight and sometimes I'll tie the exact sane fly without the wire so they look identical but have different sink rates. A fly with 8 wraps of lead compared to the same fly without the lead wire (lead free) will sink quite a bit faster. It all comes down to how the fly is going to be fished to decide if the additional weight is necessary. The main point of the video was to show wrapping the wire so it does not get caught on your thread so you can create a smooth underbody. I hope this long (probably confusing) answer helped! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Put your wire in a bobbin.
@demuthflyfishing
@demuthflyfishing 29 дней назад
I have put the wires in bobbins in the past, but have moved away from doing it. I never had the correct size loaded and it really doesn't save me much time. However, I know people do this a lot and it can be a good way to wrap wire. Thank you for the comment! Maybe you will be able to hop on live with us and join in the fun one evening!

Horrible technique, people don’t do your wire wraps this way. To get no wastage add thread wrap first then lead wire, wrap lead wire in front of the thread once wraps are done tie off the wire, helicopter. You get no wastage and a smooth clean transition from wire to thread body.
@demuthflyfishing
@demuthflyfishing Год назад
Saying that this technique is a horrible technique might be a bit of an overstatement. Your technique works, but personally it takes me more time to start my thread, then secure the wire with thread, then wrap the wire, then secure the wire again with the thread, then helicopter it off. Additionally, I can get a cleaner transition with the technique shown versus the technique that you are describing. I do definitely think that your technique works though. You prefer one way, I prefer another way....it's all good!
@trumannicholson
@trumannicholson Год назад
I’ve wrapped wire the way he explained for several years now and I prefer this method over yours which I’ve used before too. One reason I use this method he explains is If I want to tie a handful of flies I can dress all the hooks with a bead and wire before picking up the thread and saves me a little time. Doing what works best for you is the best method. Calling someone’s method wrong just because you don’t do it that way doesn’t make it horrible. It’s just another way of doing it.
@flydryriver4966
@flydryriver4966 Год назад
@@demuthflyfishingmy technique is way faster and you get a way more smoother transition between the wire and thread wraps and no wastage, there’s no argument about it. Saying my technique is slower screams ignorance and sounds like you have never tried it. Each to their own, but I pay for my materials like 99% of other Tiers and wastage is not in my vocabulary.
@flydryriver4966
@flydryriver4966 Год назад
@@trumannicholson doing it my way is faster, you get a smoother finish and there’s no waste. I can knock out 1 dozen hooks ready for whatever I want to tie in less than 3 mins, his method is wasteful and time consuming and is a horrible technique unless you’re tying one or two flies for yourself and have a glass of macallans at the ready, there’s no argument about it. It’s funny when stating the facts how people get so defensive when their technique/s are questioned. Hey go ahead and waste your materials and time. Each to their own.
@trumannicholson
@trumannicholson Год назад
So, you’re tying the wire off with thread then helicoptering the wire off?I’m assuming you’re whip finishing then cutting or breaking your thread? Then removing the hook from the vise before putting another hook in the vise and repeating the process?
