When wrapping wire to add weight to bead head flies, having a smooth underbody is a critical element to a nice looking and durable fly. Using a technique that delivers this smooth underbody while generating minimal waste is very important to us a fly tyers. The main technique that most people do backwards is the actual direction that we wrap the wire. Make sure when you hold the tag end of the wire and begin wrapping with the spool in you hand that you are wrapping in the opposite direction as you would normally wrap your thread. This will allow you to create a nice thread ramp up to the lead wraps without having your thread catch on your end of the wire. Typically the broken end of the wire is pointing in the opposite direction of your thread and this is why the thread will prematurely split or go in between the wire wraps. Wrapping the wire in the opposite direction of your thread allows the broken end to face in the same direction of the way your thread is wrapping, thus creating less obstruction for the thread.
Thank you for watching and as always, let us know if you have any questions!
Please join us live on Wednesday nights at 9:00 eastern time for Whip Finish Wednesday as we tie up a different fly or go over various techniques each week. We will see you then!
