Love the simplicity and still great look of this fly. I'm a newbie, in what season of the year would you use this?

You could probably use this year round depending on what bugs are in your local waters.

OK. I give up. I've looked through all your great "Mil-Spec" fly videos (and watched all your other great videos) and cannot find out what "Mil-Spec" means. ??? Joe

It's a term with guns. I like AR-15s and it's a common term with them.

The common theme for their "Mil-spec" flies is the thread body with a marker-colored thread rib. Super simple. Mil-spec really means "military specification"

I thought the size of the hook was determined by the size of the gape?

It is. The hook gap is exaggerated on this one die to the straight eye though. A down eye will eat up the hook gap a little bit, and with small flies, you take all the gap you can get.
