Although I don’t fly gliders, although I am trying to learn RC Gliders, I absolutely have long respected and loved the art, skill, and quiet excitement of flying gliders. I have dreamt of such moments featured on this channel. I guess in my own way I try to encapsulate such experiences via fly fishing, hiking, flying drones, and now trying my best to learn how to fly RC Planes. I also create RU-vid Videos to share scenes of where I live. Please keep up the great work so I see my dreams.

Congratulations for the video... It is really wonderful because it synthesizes both the poetry and the technique of gliding. The mechanism of the anabatic current in the French Alps is the same as in Rome in summer; in the afternoon an anabatic current enters from the sea - much appreciated by the Romans which they call "ponentino" - and which is drawn by the south-west oriented ridges of the internal mountains.... Christopher, you inspired me to look further into soaring. I'll be retiring from commercial flying soon, and the beautiful sport of soaring will be the perfect thing for me to keep my hand in flying in my retirement years. I take my first lesson on October 9th. Thank you!

Hands down the best gliding video of 2021 !!! It must have taken a considerable amount of time to put together edit etc. I really liked the use of Google Earth and the overlaid images of the lift. Fantastic. Thanks.

Try paragliding. You will feel the nature on your face, skin, muscles as a bird. I did glides with sailplanes but i felt not as connected trough high speed and not feeling the wind. I felt like its a dream. I loved the gliding ratio. I flew many times with sailplanes in the same thermal in Slovenia and Hungary. Amazing experience.

Holy hell this makes me want to take up gliding and I've never had the inclination in my life. Haven't seen a take-off or landing yet, which makes me want them more. Wow, you have really taught me something today. I have never heard of 'Anabatic' lift. . . So to be clear, Anabatic lift happens on the sun facing slope of a valley. It has to be a valley so that the 'shaded' slope's cooling air feeds the sun facing slope's rising air...... oh wow.... I just had a Eureka moment (while typing this). I once flew into a valley and casually flew out again. Our CFI gave me hell for going in there saying that it is a trap. . Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the kind words. Everything is a matter of degree. In the mountains, you'll see experienced pilots following the prominent ridges religiously because of the thermals that are triggered by the anabatic lift below. But when you're below the ridge and use the lift on the slope to climb (not to be confused with the orographic slope lift), you're in anabatic lift. If there's a valley (or other source of cool air) feeding the system, the effect is amplified. Regarding your experiences with your instructors, listen to them. I cannot know what the situation was on that particular day or valley, and he or she might have been referring to something else.

@@FayenceSoaring Absolutely - never went back to that valley. It's a very tight valley with a pronounced shadow effect kills thermals... but I got fantastic lift on the slopes facing the sun... hey this was some 25 years ago. I have no experience with ridge lift (or waves) and hence why I'm now keen to move to your part of the world. . I believe Le Centre de Vol à Voile Montpellier has a 4 day ridge lift training program for Euro1,000. Does Fayence have anything similar?

Yes, that's the pertinent piece of the puzzle, but as always, you've got to consider everything else and put it all together. The most obvious exceptions are: don't fly on the downwind side of the ridge or put yourself in a situation you can't get out of safely.

Thank you for another super video with a good explanetion about how ridge lift is created, very interesting. Your pictures are stunning, what a landscape. But for me from a mountainless country also rather scaring. I guess that you have some spots you remember very well where you can land, if it does go another way than you planned for. So you know the minimum height where you can try to start the engine, and still can reach a safe spot, if it does not start. How close do you fly to the mountain sides? I have seen some scary scenes where it seems very very close.... 😱 Hope to see more videos from you, and maybe a bit from your club too?

Thanks for the kind words. Don't confuse anabatic lift with slope (orographic) lift. Also, once the engine is shut down after launch, I'm a glider -- using the engine as a backup plan is extremely dangerous. Finally, depending on the conditions, I could be flying within a wingspan of the mountain, but that's not something one should do unless they've been trained for it and have lots of experience getting a little closer with each passing season.

@@FayenceSoaring Thank you for posting these great tips Chris, explains some past observations and I will use this on my next trip to Minden hopefully next month (almost double vaxed). It's going to be a long while before I get even close to a wingspan of the mountains again, had to bring an outstanding pilot down the mountains at Ely a few months ago may he rest in peace (Polish, superb pilot, held a number of US and EU records). If in slope and you feel any gusts or felt chaotic air earlier even though the ridge feels smooth please add more margin than you normally would for me.

Thanks for the nice Video! It´s more than your message in there. It´s also a good stuff for FI´s, and Air-Cadetts. I ever told my Cadetts to fly calm and smooth, because this is a sailplane and not a fighterjet! Don´t make more ruddermovement as necessary ! Don´t circle you down by trying to center a bad thermal, go ahead. All these things are shown by you in this Video! Not mentiont that´s are only the basics ! And when you say fly slow it doesn´t means under your safety speed, when you close to the hills. Thanks Pit

That's correct: the MacCready Speed Command doesn't know your total energy state, and could command you to slow all the way down to your minimum sink speed in situations that aren' safe to do so. As pilots, we must consider minimum energy requirements and decide what is an appropriate minimum speed.

I agree, which is why I didn't recommend it. One can get the benefits of the anabatic lift without getting dangerously close to the terrain. As always, one must always have the minimum energy available to meet the energy required of the situation. And if you reach that limit, execute a pre-planned escape maneuver.

In my other videos I have added navigation graphics where they are applicable to what I'm explaining. Having them visible all of the time would distract from the other elements that I'm trying to share., but I will have more graphics in future videos.

Hello, thank you for the great video, I am really interested in starting gliding so can you explain what licence do you need and how long does it take to get it? Also do you do any aerobatics with the glider?

One requires a license to fly gliders, but the requirements of that license depends on what country you're in. I recommend you search the internet for soaring in your country, and you'll find the rules. There are gliders designed for aerobatics, but my ASH 31 Mi is designed for fast cross-country soaring. My long wings aren't compatible with aerobatics! I hope this helps, and good luck!

Bonjour, magnifiques reportages sur une pratique que j'adore mais que je n'ai jamais pratiqué. Vers 7min10 vous dites lorsqu'on rentre tard il faut rester près des montagnes et ralentissez... Entendez-vous par la qu'en fin de journée la température accumulée par les versants occasionnent des échanges et que cela permet de conserver la portance?

@gsr2700is Bonjour ! Oui c'est correct. La pente face au soleil en fin de journée restera chaud même après avoir cessé de déclencher les thermiques. Bien que tu ne puisses pas monter au-dessus de la pente, tu auras de bonnes chances d'empêcher une descente. Voler à une vitesse plus lente (maintenir un minimum du triangle jaune) tu permettras de maximiser le bénéfice de la portance anabatique. Bons vols !

@@FayenceSoaring thanks for the info, Christopher. I regularly go to Puimoisson to fly in that paradise but with my pure glider lak17b I have never dared to cross the mountains from Modane to Aosta. I am studying your and other pilots' videos and igc's but without an engine it is an intimidating jump. What do you think? Does the engine of the ASH31 give you more confidence to fly those routes to Aosta and further or is it just a matter of knowing the mountains by heart?

Having the engine only helps for launching; one should never use it to “give more confidence” as that can be extremely dangerous. Once I shut the engine down after launch, I’m a glider just like you. Building confidence to do the next step, in this case crossing the Col de Carro, comes with knowledge and experience. Get comfortable in the Vallée de la Maurienne. Always monitor your required glide ratio to your current glide ratio. As long as you are at or above the crests, you’re within gliding range of Sollieres to the west, or Aosta to the east. And don’t hesitate to fly with an instructor if you feel uncomfortable with what you’re doing: discomfort is your body’s way of telling you that you’re doing something that you don’t understand.

During the late spring and summer months in the Alps, the temperatures are very comfortable unless you go much higher than 4,000 meters. The greater risk is getting too hot when you're below 2,000 meters.

Moin, schöne Bilder. Aber km/h schreibt man nicht mit hr... Der arme Duo-Discus der gegenüber einer 21m ASH kurbeln muss. Besser als geradeaus durch den Berg zu fliegen. :-) Indem anderen Video tief in den Bergen, hat das mit dem Hangfliegen leider nicht geklappt. War wohl zu wenig (schwere) Kaltluft aus dem Tal das von der leichten aufsteigenden Warmluft nicht mitgenommen wurde. Da hat der Kaltlufthacken versagt und ist abgerissen. Wellenfliegen ist wohl die schnellste Variante für mich in den Bergen. In jedemfall im Winter sind 1000km auch möglich. www.gerd-pfeffer.de/downloads.html Viele Infos
