Flying A Red-Tailed Hawk On A Creance

Here's a short video I made showing how I trained my immature male Red-Tailed Hawk on a creance. I hope any apprentice falconers out there find it useful. Falconry is a legal sport in the US but requires special licensing. The photos in the beginning and the end are by Wil Weiss. If you have any questions, please check out my blog at ehfalconry.word... or shoot me an email.

Thanks, Rylan. I'm glad other falconers are checking my stuff out and I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the vid and sharing your knowledge! Don't stress the negative comments from the peanut gallery about being jumpy. Part of the training is not just for the bird but for you too! Keep at it!

Anybody consider he's nervous because he's on camera?

Thanks Sam, in the process of preparing for the test, and finding a sponsor. Keep up the great work.

So much respect for you man. If I had the time, space, and resources I would do this. But it will have to wait. Again so much respect for you, because you respect your bird and you don't come off as a know it all jerk. Stay healthy, and best wishes for you both.

The bird is beautiful and well done on manning it to be so gentle and relaxed with you. The thing that's an issue for me is although the bird clearly trusts you, you seem to have no trust for it, you're very nervous and jumpy around it which isn't a good way to the train the bird. By all means have respect for the power and capabilities of the bird but being fearful of it isn't a good thing in falconry.

Hey Sam! I'm an apprentice falconer myself but I have a Red-shoulder. I have a video of him on my channel, but he's still in the very early stages of training. Red-shoulders take longer to train than Red-tails from what I've heard, but after holding that small hawk on my arm for a few hours I am grateful for his lighter weight. lol

The bird lands on your hand very gentle, which is good. Lovely RedTail you have I gotta say. No need to be spooked a little! I noticed that in the beginning, the bird is very comfortable with you being around. What surprises me is him grabbing the "bait" from the ground to your hand, especially how he tries to grasp at the "bait", he lands gently to catch it. Seems nice, but part of it makes me think that it won't do good if he's actually trying to approach a real animal

Why do you freak out and get nervous with your own hawk?

I didn't realize other states allowed birds other than Red-tails and Kestrels for apprentices except for Alaska, that's good to know. I thought I was lucky to have a small bird; this tiercel is flying at around 30 right now. I can't believe your bird is only a little more than a pound! My Red-tail was pretty stubborn at first; I couldn't get him to eat from the fist until his 9th day with me, but after that it was a breeze. Good luck with the training, you're gonna have a ball when you're done.

Nice video dude! I am a apprentice falconer, and am wondering if you can give some tips involving flying the bird to the glove. In the video, you seemed quite nervous for such a well trained bird though. Is that a issue that needs fixing? Thanks!

Have you been attacked by your bird or something? You freak out a lot every time you hear his bell. Awsome bird good video in future don't talk away from the camera, hard to hear at times.

What are you so jumpy around them? If you are afraid of the bird I think you are not in the right sport. I would hope you know what rousing is... the Hawk is completely comfortable around you. Don't show fear...
@Kitsapbeek
@Kitsapbeek 9 лет назад
Well I didn't state that he didn't but if that's how thought I meant it... There is no need to be jumpy around a 4 or 5 lb bird. Now if that was a golden I would have kept my mouth shut.

that bird has a lot of slack right now, and seeing as they are wild, he probably doesn't want to get footed. Or pooped on, haha. I may react the same unless I've had the bird for more than one season and was more familiar.

+Steven smith I think weight varies for a juvenile. I know that females tend to be a bit larger than males, and the average weight of an adult is about 24 to 52 ounces. Here's a website with information on properly feeding a Red-Tailed Hawk. www.themodernapprentice.com/nutrition.htm Your sponsor should be telling you this information. Don't you have a sponsor?

why are you not training it to fly to the fist first? using a lure instead will cause nothing but problems in the future and what is worse is then watching you call it from lure to fist...... Falconry has not needed changing for hundreds of years so why change it? What will happen when you go hunting and your red tail catches a rabbit to then letting go and fly off to your fist because you trained it that way. Sorry bad falconry being shown here of maybe you know no different.

you got no trust in your own bird... if i was a hawk i would fly away from you the first chance i get. Why would i want to communicate with a human that talks to me like a human instead of a whistle or anything else that resembles a bit better my own way of communication... besides what incentive is a bunch of meatless feathers on a glove??? look at your birds face and you will know everything youre doing wrong. Dealing with any animal (specially wild) takes a spiritual connection that only tenuous observation to detail and reaction could sustain. Good luck
