Love how he is swinging his hands all over the place while holding an $80,000.00 dollar drone. I can only think the guy who signed it out for that weekend is freaking out as his hands can't stop swinging around as he is talking. Seriously was waiting for his other hand to hit and rip the rotor off. Opps, there goes $80k...
@hazonku
@hazonku 3 года назад
If it's anything like the Ravens I flew it'd be just fine. A lot of that cost is in making sure these things can survive in the field in the hands of us stupid joes who crash the damn things into the brick wall of the FOB at full speed while trying to fight a headwind on landing or into the creek right outside the wire (both true stories, and the Raven handled it like a champ). I'm sure these little guys are tough.
@Arrogan28
@Arrogan28 3 года назад
@@hazonku I find it hard to believe the army will spend so much on soldiers. I mean they will overpay for a hammer by $100 dollars. But spend money on say lightweight body armor, or something similar seems out of character from what i have heard. Ie spending $80k on these for each squad etc. Though honestly i don’t know. I think these drones seem light enough to be a good idea. If you are going to decide to keep things light i can see these being worthy of carrying the weight for days given the advantage they might give on the field. I am all for saving soldiers lives so i say give them this and the more expensive but lightee and better body armor. Stop spending a trillion on a plane that honestly doesn’t make a lick of sense. You can buy how many previous gen jets for half that price save the $250 billion for drones and the rest another $250 billion on soldiers gear. Not gonna happen because you can only mark up actual good quality body armor so much. But a next generation fighter, heck you can mark that puppy up a good $900 billion no problem...
@fcgHenden
@fcgHenden 2 года назад
Nah. I think most of that 80k is development cost. And since it's developed, the drone itself probably cost much less than that in manufacturing and materials. They still have to recoup that dev cost however since they probably hired engineers who, unlike software devs, would not let people hire you for just ramp ups for cheap and leave you in the dumps after.
@Arrogan28
@Arrogan28 2 года назад
@@fcgHenden Yea, but knowing how the Military Industry is setup, you can bet the army is paying $80k for each one of those from the maker. And so even though the maker only pays some Chinese company to make all the parts, and someone else does the assembly, probably for less then $1000 bucks total, and then they sell it at $80k. Yes, and for something that complicated you are right, software is often a large chunk of the development. But again, if it is being sold by an outside contractor which I believe it is, still costs tax payers $80 if he clips that thing the wrong way. Well maybe not. Imagine they have replacement parts for most of it for a lot cheaper. So maybe not. though again, just because that makes sense, when military contracts are involved reason is not the motivating factor, and motivating factor is whatever they can get away with to make more $... I'd wager though that they also use a lot of off-the-shelf solutions for the software as well, everything from computer vision code, to algorithms for following and tracking, they just ripped off another company which there are several already which do that kind of thing. Not hard to back engineer that software stack using pretty easy to do reverse compiling, etc.. Gotta imagine when it comes to the military, they hardly care if the software was ripped off some Chinese drone company, as long as it works they will buy it not caring at all about patents worldwide etc.... If you can build it, is all that matters...

Just to give an idea of what the nano drone have: 32 grams, flies 2 kilometers at speeds of over 21 kilometers an hour. FLIR Lepton® thermal microcamera encrypted military-approved digital datalink integrates into the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) utilized by the military ATAK is basically just the military's battlefield network interface for ground units... And this isn't the first one... it's just the latest of the Black Hornet model, And it seems that they've attracted a LOT of customers... because holy shi- there are a lot of countries who have bought Black Hornet nano drones....
@Blizofoz45
@Blizofoz45 5 лет назад
Honestly alot of what it does could actually be accomplished with a toy drone. If there's more to it like a telephoto lens and some way to mark targets, I can see that driving up the cost.

@Blizofoz45
@Blizofoz45 5 лет назад
Iono Sama There’s a video of a Visuo XS809HW flying several kilometers while transmitting 720p video in realtime for a bit under 10 minutes. If you factor in that its a quad swinging four props compared to this heli, it doesn’t seem like there’s a huge gap in capabilities. I have a GPS module from a toy drone that can fit on a tiny whoop frame. I’m not saying I could rig one up at home but because of this video I wouldn’t be surprised to see some “clone” attempts out of the usual suspects in China.
@IonoTheFanatics
@IonoTheFanatics 5 лет назад
@@Blizofoz45 I am pretty sure they have tried... (this is Black Hornet 3, ie: there have been multiple Black Hornet model before it) and China do not appear to have managed to do that and the reason why they haven't been able to is likely because of the same reason below: The Visuo XS809HW i saw was HUGE... like they were bigger than an adult male hand... when packed... that's positively GARGANTUAN compared to this thing and that's the main problem... and part of the reason why China doesn't really have an equivalent right now... to give an idea of just how big the difference is Visuo XS809HW is 158g and larger than an adult hand Black Hornet 3 is 32g and it's body is literally the size of an adult FINGER. and in that tiny nano drone, it packs 20 min endurance, and a thermal camera. The issue is replicating the capability AT THAT SIZE, hence why i was looking at nano quad and nano heli.... because they are the only thing that can even come close to this thing's size... Sure if size and weight is not an issue, we can do it with off the shelf parts... but doing it at that size and weight is the whole problem. And that size is EXACTLY why various countries have bought Black Hornet... This thing is intended for various use, but reconnaissance is one of it and being as small (and silent) is an asset for it's intended use. Hence why i am asking if there's actually any commercial drone (or even military one for that matter) that can match this thing's capability... A LOT of countries are interested with it, and China currently to the best of my knowledge do not have the capability to miniaturize the parts to this size.

The flight time is like average at best. We get used to shit flight times because of drones, but they fly 4 motors up at once, wasting huge power. My brushless rc cessna can fly for like 45 min on a 250maH battery. Whose pocket does the $79,900 go to after they painted an airhogs heli black?

My uncle used to tell me his war stories, he told me that back in 1979 he was assigned to special ops, where his squad would be dropped off in the middle of the night behind enemy lines and to navigate they used Handheld GPS units. Handheld GPS didn't even come out until 10+ years later commercially. Made me think of how advanced military technology is with this micro drone.

The drone is ultra light, with amazing battery life for the weight, as well as 2 kilometers of range. It's probably also very tough and rugged, as it's for a military application. It may seem like a steep price, but for military situations it has to be reliable and capable beyond reasonable doubt.

20-minute flight time! That just goes to show you that there is technology out there, I don't understand why they don't implement that in the consumer drone world? Could you imagine having a Mavic Pro that could stay in the air for an hour!

@oBseSsIoNPC
@oBseSsIoNPC 4 года назад
to be fair, it is $80,000 bucks because of the development of ALL components. The drone, the circuitry, the controller, the software, the station. What we piece together from other companies to make $200 dollar quads, they did from scratch, in-house. They can make each consecutive one for a lot less. Stuff we buy for FPV is much cheaper, because it is mass produced and sourced from multiple companies. Development still costs a ton of money. 33g is less than a tenth of a regular quad, so it better get 20+ minutes flight time. It clearly has some latency issues.

The drone racing tent was great to watch and the shade was very welcome on the sunday haha, that gate in the far corner after they went over the banner in the middle caught out so many pilots that they wore a hole in the net next to it from constantly flinging quads at it after striking the ground through the gate. Watching at this event is what started an interest in fpv quads for me and it is cool to see it come up again in a video that has just appeared in my youtube reccomendations.
