Thanks for the fun video. I have followed your cooking channel for years but this is my first time here. I live in Georgia , USA but was born and raised in Oshawa and lived pretty close to the airport. It was such fun seeing my hometown though things have really changed since I lived there. My father in law flew into Oshawa airport in his plane for my wedding in 1980!
Those cookies look delicious. I'm struck by how quiet the plane seems and tranquil. I could really get used to flying privately, it looks like the way to go. Question, will we ever see at least hybrid engines in small planes? Or God forbid, EV planes? What a wonderful life you both have. Enjoy.
I don't necessarily like flying, but I find the view from the air comforting for some reason -- maybe because it looks like a giant quilt from the air???
If you ever get the chance, you should come up to Alaska and do some flight-seeing! It’s an aviation paradise up here, with similar infrastructure challenges as rural Canadian towns. Enjoy your flight to Nunavut in August!
Glenn and Julie first airplane video I’ve watched I’d love the Cooking Channel… Regarding how far smoke can travel I live here in Northern New Jersey and last year on certain days we had so much smoke from wildfires in Canada it was thick enough that it was obscuring Eurovision over a distance and you could definitely smell it
Ha! I came in twice - the tower told me to pull up and go around when I was almost on the runway on the first attempt. Plane in front of me was having trouble getting off the runway.
Looks like fire season is getting an early start this year. So far here in northern Idaho we haven't had any significant fire activity just yet, hope it stays that way.
I prefer my lassy mogs with dates actually because I hate raisins (and currants are too fricking expensive) and my kids won’t eat either so I do a batch without any dried fruit. Grew up in Toronto ,and my mom is out your way (Ajax/Whitby) so I always enjoy the flights out of Oshawa ❤Hopefully Ontario doesn’t have a crap summer like last year and you can fly more Glenn and Julie❤
Howdy- You might consider the fuel bags from Alaska Gear Company. Unbelievably convenient! Super easy to refuel as they self dispense. Pack empty down to nothing. I've used them in my Super Cub and wouldn't leave home without them. Also a suggestion to contact the operators in the region you're heading. An operator's number in Haine's Junction saved my bacon when my fuel sources dried up. Have a fun trip and watch the fog... :)
Yes - the only way is to call all the possible airports along the route. I've been working through that - but as most of them get only 1 or 2 deliveries a year, they can't yet give any solid info. I looked at the fuel bags, it's a possible solution; but since I'll probably leave with extra fuel right from the get go, having them pack down isn't really a concern.
I shouted out doing a doing a Kugluktuk run in the comments of your Welcome to 2024...Now What, video. Happy and surprised and a little jealous to hear you planning a trip there. Cheers!
Thanks for the mention Glen! Yeah, up north just make sure you call ahead. CFS may indicate avgas, but there usually isn’t any and no notams about it either. Some charge crazy money for a barrel like Schefferville 1200cad, some surprisingly cheap like Iqaluit only 360 cad, and they have a powered pump there, so they fill you up. But either way, take your own pump too.
Hiya Glen, in one of the shots it showed the town below, my backside fell right out and my stomach sank being about 3,000 feet high in the air, good vlog though, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Glen, I've like you from your cooking channel, but now, like you even more knowing you're a pilot!!!! I will follow your hanger channel now, too. BTW, I would put dates in these!! Cheers! ☘️
Great video, Glen! Julie was ready for a cookie, haha. For a while, I've been looking for a GoPro cooler for just this purpose. Would you mind linking the one you made or purchased?
Thanks Glen & Julie! A picnic in the air! Fabulous :) One question, what does "with information Bravo" and "... information Papa" mean when talking to the tower?
Many airports have a system called ATIS or AWOS (slightly different, but for the purpose of this discussion the same) which is a discreet frequency that repeats an information package about wind speed and direction, Barometric pressure, temperature, visibility, runway in use, and some other stuff depending on airport. Every time it is updated it gets a new identifier (Bravo, Charlie, etc). You listen to this info before entering the control zone, and let tower know that you've listened so they don't have to repeat it all.
As far as ATC communication, the introductory calls are not necessary and may seem best, but at a busier airport just add to radio clutter. When you first contact Ground, Approach, Tower etc go ahead and complete your request. They can handle it. IE, "Ground, MPU at west ramp with alpha ready to taxi VFR to Ohare" . It is more profesional and they will appreciate it.
I agree to a point - but there have been many times where I've taken that approach, and been knocked back by ATC who wasn't yet prepared. If you are already in the system, and they are expecting to hear from you - then it's all good. But on a cold call, it seems best to prepare them. I'll be coving this in an upcoming episode where I track a flight both in the cockpit and inside the various ATC units that handled the flight. The interviews with ATC tackle this point - although every controller may have a different opinion.
Looking forward to hearing how that battery compartment fan works for you. I would also appreciate a link so I can test it myself haha :P I'm moving to Florida soon and know I'll have even more overheating issues compared to flying in Wisconsin.
7:57 if you can't get there by road what sort of supplies are you planning to bring? im thinking the supply lines up in a place without roads wouldn't be as flexible as more south, how would one prepare for going out there? what i mean is how do you be a good neighbor and not show up just expecting the locals to support you? or am i just thinking too hard about this and supply lines are not that brittle
You're not wrong - many of the places we are visiting get a big shipment in the winter by ice road, or in the Spring when it can arrive by sea. Other supplies delivered by air are extremely expensive. However there are a couple of remote places in Northern Ontario - winter road or air access only - that still have a KFC. We'll be camping mostly, so we'll pack in most of what we need to eat.
Flew about 5 hours in full sun yesterday, and forgot to turn off the camera when we parked a couple hours for lunch. The camera was subjected to really high heat especially when parked. The fan kept the camera cool enough that it never shut down; so I'm pretty happy with it. @@GlensHangar My sister who still lives in Thunder Bay but now retired used to work for Bearskin Airlines magazine. I did hear how they flew people to Thunder Bay for medical treatment.
G,day Glen from Sydney Australia. The cookies look a bit like an ANZAC biscuit. My nickel on the grass. You don't want to fly through forest fire smoke, not very pleasant. If you are transporting fuel cans are you carrying a step ladder and transfer pump? 🌏🇦🇺
Yes I always carry a ladder in the plane, it has come in very handy at times. Though most airports have a few ladders kicking around. Transfer pump is something we're looking at.
I do have the mogas stc - but there is still a problem finding mogas without ethanol. The farther North we go, the less likely we'll run into ethanol but it is consideration. We also lived in several towns in the North with airports, but without any fuel in town (avgas, mogas, or diesel).
She's as bad as that kid in the back seat asking are we there yet.LOL there's a big fire near Flin Flon there is a airport at bakers narrows lake Athapap 15 minutes out of town to the south. not sure if it's closed due to the fire ,or just Emergency traffic .
The CFS (Canada Flight Supplement) tells you if 100LL Avgas is 'available'... But that document is updated only every 28 days, and many of the airports we are visiting are small with limited resources. Many are accessible only by air (so the fuel is flown in in drums) or by winter ice road so fuel arrives only once a year. It becomes a game of call ahead to find out of there is currently fuel and try and reserve some for when you arrive, or hope that it's still there when you arrive. When Julie and I worked in the bush in Northern Canada we routinely had to find caches of fuel drums dumped beside lakes during the winter so we could use it in the summer. Many of the bigger bush operators switched out to aircraft that burn JetA.
Unfortunately the plane isn't IFR equipped - If it was, I could fly through the smoke although it isn't recommended since the fine particles aren't good for the engine.
