Hello everyone! Let me introduce Ann Tarabini from Learn How to Quilt.com. Her RU-vid channel is: / learnhowtoquiltcom
Today, we are going to show you another one of my favorite string busting ideas! It is fast easy, useful as a novelty block and a lot of fun!
Here are all the Free Foundation Pieced Patterns (FPP):
3 in finished drive.google.c...
2.5 in finished
drive.google.c...
2.0 in finished
drive.google.c...
1.5 in finished
drive.google.c...
1.0 in finished
drive.google.c...
These FPP blocks makes a perfect copping strip in a quilt and it will elevate your quilt to the next level. If you need a shorter strip, take a goose or two off one or both ends. This could also be used to make a star into a feathered star to give your work a special wow factor! You can also sew these blocks end to end to make a border or surround a scrappy lone star.
I stay stitch around the other edge to stabilize the finished FPP piece.
Remember it is easier to make more than one of these blocks at once because you can chain piece!
Remember to have fun with trying different scale of prints, color combinations, different layouts and keep moving forward.
Most importantly, quilting and piecing is about having fun not feeling pressured!
There is so many things to look at on a scrappy quilt that other people won't notice any mistakes you make.

I just got the suggestion to use a light box when paper piecing. I have a cheap one and it works just fine. I may go back to paper piecing again.

Enjoy your videos, I've found if I crease my paper on all the lines I don't have to hold it up to the light because I can see the crease line out side of the pattern and know I have enough room for a seam.

Love this idea - could really only listen as your camera for some reason couldn't focus and my eyes are very sensitive - so I would look then have to put you on back ground and listen.

I came across your videos the other day. It has inspired me to conquer my mountain of scraps! I don't throw anything out. I have also acquired my grandmother and aunts fabric collection. I will be making many flying geese as starter pieces when sewing other projects - Yeah 2 in one projects! Looking forward to many future project with you! I do have a question- I am having trouble with the 1" and 2" patterns from above. The 1" is coming up as 1.5 and the 2" is saying I need access?

Perhaps you might have covered this elsewhere. What needle do you use. What thread type or weight. What thickness of paper? AND. After you stay-stitch and trim to the lines on the pdf, What do you tend to do with the cut off BITS. My husband has had to get used to threads and bits all over the house. When I stand up they all fall off my apron 🤣🤣 🇦🇺💜🥰

Hello Anita! I use a 90 needle, 50 wt thread and cheap printer paper. The bits I trim off are saved for a surprise project. I'm glad you liked this video. A coping strip is a strip of fabric that makes the block bigger or so that the block can be trimmed to the correct size because the 1/4 inch seam was too big. I hope that explains that term better. I haven't done the paper piecing yet but would it help to place it face down on a light board, draw lines across the back to show the bottom line of the triangles, then a line down the middle to show center point.This way you know where the material needs to be without flipping it back and forth and holding it to the light?

Love this method and video instruction. If you sew the strips together to make a longer strip, do you leave paper on where you sew them together or remove it before sewing the strip together. Love all your videos. I’m enjoying reviewing your videos in your playlists as I just found your channel last week. I appreciate you sharing your time and expertise❤️❤️

Hi TheJag1357! I leave the paper on the little ones (1 inch finished) for 2 reasons, I can match all my point perfectly and I have the block stabile for pulling off the paper once it is sewn into a project. The larger ones, I stay stitch around the edge between the cut line and the sewing line as they are easier to handle. If I sew the strips together, I leave the paper on so I have the prefect fit. You may yet convert me to paper piecing, which no one else has ever been able to do, except for pineapple blocks with a translucent paper ... which are not printed any more!

Oh yes, I've already watched those, and they're good. I'd made some before I paper-pieced them, but I liked the translucent paper piecing - learned it at the Houston festival years ago. The lady who taught it died, and her children didn't continue making the papers, sadly.

You are amazing. I did a pile of flying geese for a couple of quilts I made and I thought I knew it all. But you have come up with a few really good ideas. Never thought of piercing the wing part of the geese, and never thought of stay stitching it either. Both ideas are really clever and I am slightly embarrassed that I didn't think of them. It seems obvious when you pointed it out. I am a lazy quilter and always paper piece when I can so I don't have to worry about points and perfection. So this is right up my alley. I started using a cheap dollar store glue stick for paper piecing. Makes life so much simpler!! I love using scraps for this but i never thought about doing flying geese. Would make a great scrappy border ❤️
