Flying in turbulent air on a paraglider

Mid August in South Tirol, Italy. The weather forecast was wrong, so we got strong wind from unfortunate direction and low cloud base. Decided to launch though and flew a little 100 km triangle in those demanding conditions. A lot of lee side flying, battling against the strong wind, and working on keeping the wing open.

Great job! I flew in Chamonix in a Foehn wind and it was like a washing machine. Kissed the ground when I landed!

The sigma seem to absorb the energy of the air into concise elastic movements with clear counteractions needed by the pilot in a really nice way, wish I was in the correct weight range for it :)

I don't understand why the lee side flying works? I thought it would be all sink?

Great job handling your glider. A little too sketchy for me.

Why was the air so turbulent? (Apart from the lee side at the begining) I hope i dont have to fly in that kind of conditions.
@dymanoid
@dymanoid 2 года назад
Strong regional wind, strong valley breeze and narrow valleys, humidity, and lee side both from the regional wind (near the summits) and from the valley breeze (caused by terrain).

Do you often get big collapses under the Sigma 10 when you fly accelerated? On less turbulent days for example?
@dymanoid
@dymanoid Год назад
I don't fly it anymore. But during the 500+ hours on it, I had only 3 massive collapses - 2 asymmetric and one frontal. The latter you can find in my videos. The glider is very stable and collapses late, but when it does, things quickly get very dynamic.

If you'll have a look at the video description, you can find out that it's a Sigma 10 😉

Wow! Can’t argue the videos title haha Well done, great flying mate, was great to watch also, so thank you for sharing. Do you think this issue could be eliminated by using a smaller rated wing?,, low to high B just for curiosity, something more pitch stable. Often wondered because the wing I fly at a certain site near home is a lot of work and can get me far, but I’ve often wondered if I used one of my older lesser rated wings… Just curious is all

Thanks for watching :) I prefer to fly one wing in all conditions, this gives me the confidence 'cause I know what to expect. Indeed, you can choose a different ('easier') wing for the turbulent weather, it's a personal preference, I believe. My personal feeling is that we should fly gliders only we feel comfortable on in the strongest air. I won't suggest you anything, but if I was thinking 'wow this wing is too much for this air', I'd definitely consider stepping down to another ('easier') wing in general.

@@dymanoid yeah cool man, great reply, that was good to read and made some solid points. How many hours do you have up if you use a log book in your country? They’re very strict over here in Aus, everything involving aviation is all under CASA, civil aviation safety authority, the big dog who governs all things fly Iggy related, so now our decades old HGFA hang gliding federation of Australia, but stay with me here, we fly under SAFA sports aviation federation of Australia * now breathe as I think I went blue just then haha Hit me up again dude, I like the way you think, it’s clearly working for you. Peace homes ✌🏽

@@patrickswayze2596 We're not required to log the flights here in Europe, but I do that anyway - just for my personal statistics. I believe I have something slightly over 800h as of now.

@Patrick Swayze It's not that much, some people fly 800h a year. I make 250h a year at most and fly since 2016.
