Flying Solo for the First Time! 12/23/2023 KLNS

On December 23, 2023 I had my very first solo flight in a Cessna 172S. As a young kid aspiring to be a professional pilot, nothing made me more excited, then hopping in a plane all by myself and flying it around with just my knowledge and judgment. It all started back in January 2020 when I had my very first discovery flight, I loved it so much and knew I wanted to fly. As time went on, I was busy with school, sports, and family and didn’t pay much attention to flight school. I then started back up about five months ago really grinding out ground school and getting those hours. Hard work and dedication is what got me here today (aswell as a bit of $$$) but to say the least, I had a blast, and I’m really looking forward to what the future holds.

I don't think anything will ever beat what the first solo feels like. I remember this surging of child-like excitement and freedom after takeoff. Once I was over 1000', it dawned on me that I was alone up there and felt this weight falling on my shoulders, then just total focus after. Seeing the right seat empty really hit me..."it's all up to me now" I thought.

I've always heard this, but my first solo was "just another day a the office." I was way over-prepared for it. My instructor said I was ready and was pushing me to solo with very few hours... 7 or so. I wasn't feeling it. He kept pushing and I kept refusing. No self-confidence whatsoever. I ended up flying 3 different types of aircraft including a taildragger before I was finally willing to solo. And it was... completely underwhelming. Even with losing both vacuum pumps on my first solo lap, it was all just routine. I did my laps, then taxied the plane to the maintenance shop for the vacuum pump issue. In hindsight, my instructor was 100% correct. Skill-wise, I was very much ready to solo at 7 hours. I just didn't know it myself. Now, my first long cross country was a different story. I flew to my girlfriend's town 2 hours away for lunch, then flew back. Now that felt like an accomplishment.

Congrats! Take as much time as needed, and most importantly, fly with as many pilots as you can. It's amazing how much you can learn from the right or back seats. Even if it's what not to do. Also, don't pull a TNFlyGirl... put the cameras down (no RU-vid) and learn to fly. I've always flown with a GoPro over-the-shoulder, but I use it for flight reviews and a poor-man's black box, not social media.

@@Aviation_777YT I sure did subscribe, first thing. I’ve always loved planes. But all I’ve ever accomplished is Microsoft Flight Sim and X-Plane. I feel I’m too old now, but man, I wish I had started flying lessons and went all the way. I do have a real cool story, which is true. I grew up in the Quad cities, Moline Illinois to be exact. My father was the manager of a local dairy and ice cream plant. He was also on the chamber of commerce. Every year the Quad city airport would have an airshow , and among the annual flight teams, were the blue angels. My dad came home one night after work, and he had been given the job of accompanying the blue angels around in the evening and making sure they went to dinner, and had all of the hotel accommodations they needed. Mind you, I was 14 years old at the time and seemingly afraid of everything. He asked and I quote, how would you like to go up for a plane ride with one of the blue angels tomorrow? I was so afraid, wanted to so bad, but the chicken in me said no. That was way back when they were flying the F4 Phantom. Instead, about eight weeks later, I got a cardboard tube in the mail. Inside was a poster which I unrolled, and it was a picture of the flight team, all of them, with their autographs. On the top, it said to Mark, Future navy fighter pilot. I still have it framed, and hanging on my bedroom wall. I have regretted that decision of saying no every day for the rest of my life since. Please, always follow your dream. But also, please always be safe. Thank you for reading this, but I figured you might find it interesting. Take care.

Pilots are my favorite people!! I’ve flown 30+ years of business travel to 60 countries, logging 4,000,000 air miles. Flight crews get me safely to work and home again. I adore them. My uncle had his PPL. And a plane. Flew us often from the time I was little. So stay safe. Stay strong.

Congratulations on your Solo! Your airspeeds were very good. Landings too. If I may offer a few suggestions: 1. Never Never play (heads down) with things while taxi / takeoff roll. All it takes is a second or two of losing your situation awareness to kill you. 2. Your bank angles were too steep. 3. Remove that checklist from the glareshield/window. It blocks the view you could use while flairing and also could dislodge and cause distraction. 4. On touchdown you are relaxing the controls. Fly the plane all the time, even on the ground until stopped. Again, you've done great, keep at it.

Loved every minute of this video - took me back 35 years. When he started singing AOK on the base to final turn on landing 2 was the best moment. All of that awesomeness said, as well as congratulations. 2 minor criticisms, first I would gently say I noticed he hyper focused on the instruments, not sure if that wed just the edit, but not a lot of time spent looking outside from the looks of the video. Second minor criticism, the Dallas Cowboys did not in fact win the Super Bowl, so that must mean this young man doesn't have very good prediction skills! The love of aviation runs in our veins, and this youngster learning to do this and developing a love for aviation is the content I am here looking for. "This girl is on fire".... HAHAHA

Aren't you scared of what could happen if the plane fails, even of something as simple as metal fatigue which is often undetectable? Aren't these planes maintained by overworked and underpaid mechanics? I want to be a pilot but there are too many hands in the kitchen and people are unreliable.
