Seriously the ultimate airplane. A child could fly it. Sometimes they do. Criticizing not changing the design is like wondering why your soup spoon doesnt have a computer-guided laser sight. Sometimes a design just works and has been figured out.

It was always fun to get it into slow flight and fly it backwards. Also, recovered on it's own from incipient spins, just really gentle to fly. Great for teaching wing down, top rudder in crosswinds. All round winner to learn basic flying technique.

I would argue whether the 172 or the 150/152 trained more pilots, but stepping up to it from a 150 was like the day I went from a PA28 to a PA32-300. WOW! Got my instrument ticket in a 172... single nav-com with glideslope and an ADF. Things were sure simple in the 60s. Hey, you take us for lots of rides in things that go higher, faster and further. Now, you show me my 'real dream' of flying... Low and Slow, and look out the windows to navigate! Thanks Rick! I enjoyed today's flight............

When I started almost 30 years ago now, we flew those late 70’s, (77-79) 152’s and 172’s. The new ones, although they look essentially the same, are so much more well built and better airplanes than those of 45 years ago.

I just did my discovery flight a couple hours ago. This was the one we flew in. Got to take off and because it was windy, it made us feel like we were free falling. Didn't really like that feeling too much, but the experience was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Haven't been in an airplane in about 15 years and I'm nervous of heights, so it felt good to crush that fear.

When I learned to fly almost 50 years ago in a Cessna 150, and then flew a 172, I was amazed at how benign the stall behavior was compared to the 150. Just by appearance, I thought the 172 was just an up sized 150, but they handle differently. I guess the additional weight has a lot to do with it.

I went from the 150 to the 182. What a difference, but the Skylane was just a dream to fly. I mean, nothing wrong with the 150, if you don't mind a cramped, two seat leaf in the wind, but the Skylane was a 'let's go half way across the country today! kind of airplane.

Thanks for the memories Rich. My dad was a Piper/Cessna dealer in Spokane Washington back in the 60's and 70,s. I learned to fly in a Cherokee 180, a 172, and a Cessna 182. My best landings were always in the Cherokee. When he decided to sell the business he suggested that me and my brother who was also flying might want to by one of the many new aircraft we had in stock at the time. My cost for a basically new Cessna 182 in 1975 was around 25k if I remember correctly. Boy have things changed. I was a sophomore in college and decided to pass. OPPS...My grandfather was also a Chrysler Plymouth Imperial dealer and I could of bought Hemi Cuda's at cost too.....who knew😫

Great video Rich. The first airplane I ever flew was a Skyhawk back in 1980. I now own that same airplane - a 1962 172C Skyhawk, the last year before the "Omnivision back window" you mentioned. I agree, there's nothing better for learning to fly. Happy Holidays.

Love the 172. Docile aircraft and If you accidentally enter a spin they recover very easily as well. I wonder if the new engines are as indestructible as the old O320. Great vid, keep em coming!

I’ve flown the M, RG, and Newest S model and they all handle exactly the same if anything maybe some slight differences. Cessna definitely likes by the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra

In 1970, the MSRP of the cesna 172 was $12500. Adjusted for inflation, that would be about $96k today. Pricing has been way over inflated for these and is a shame since it's what is killing the private pilot industry.

It just kills me, how much a Cessna cost these days. A new one 400K, a used one, 50 -80K, and some over 100K, assuming it has a low Airframe time and a good engine that has less then 2000 hours and updated avionics. Now you can build a plane or buy a used one that can fly faster, higher and out performe a Cessna 172 with half the cost.

It might be different for you, but I’ve been trained to never do special maneuvers above water (or crowds/residential areas/restricted areas), because of the reduced possibilities for landing out in case the engine does not turn back on. That means also no stalls over water. I fly in the Netherlands

We certainly had an exciting adventure at the restart in Independence. Do I remember the price in '97 shocked the press at $135K? Do you remember that I flunked my flight check with Kirby? I couldn't figure out the ILS! Navy pilots got no experience with ILS. It was all GCAs.

1/2 a Mil? That's Insane! When I started my private training in the early 70's a C-150 rental was $17/hr wet! We didn't even have transponders yet just stayed on Unicom and all we had to do was keep clear of the class 3 airspace of the main airport some 20 miiles away. I gave it up a couple years after getting my private ticket and I hit 200hrs but the rental had gone up for the 150s to over $20/hr. If I remember you could get a used 150 in good shape for around $10K or so back then. I just wish my own salary would have increased over the years as everything else has! Now I'm Old & Retired.

My Dad, a WWII bomber pilot, had a 172 in the early 60's. We lived in the SF East Bay at the time. One time we took our dog for a flight. We use to do a turn over my uncles in Berkeley hills. I've heard that dogs don't know height. That dog pissed all over. He'd look out the window and pee.

1.- GREAT VIDEO!!!!! 2.- ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL!!!! I used to fly 172 variable and fixed pitch loooong time ago......wow, however what caught my attention is how much the pilot trust the engine, I would never fly a single engine so far away from the coast line (Unless you fly "really" high), 3 - 4 miles from the coast @ 3000ft....you lose your engine...let's say you go to 640 fpm you will end up swimming, hopefully.

Sir, do naturally-aspirated piston-engine aircraft tend to cause piston ring flutter when cruising at long periods at altitude with manifold pressure lower (let say 11,000 ft ISA or warmer less than 20 in Hg) of what is recommended in the POH during cruise?

I have not experienced that and am not aware of the issue with rings. No specific recommendation in POH that I am aware of except recommended power settings.

Fuel injection made carb heating obsolete, which improves safety and makes it easier to use, but they could add variable propeller pitch command.

What happened to once you hear the the stall warning you quickly have to be very quick and YAW to the LEFT ! I did not see him do that in the video. When I was in ground school I was 19 years old got my student air man certificate and my flight instructor taught me in a 150 Cessna when u go into a stall and when u hear the stall warning u quickly take the yoke and YAW to the left. I didn't see him do that in the video ! Is this something new since it's a newer plane ? I going to look in Jeppsseny book

Hey, loved the video, love the 172. Not a pilot myself, just someone who’d love to be. Please excuse the ignorance but is this plane fuel injected? If not, why not? And if it is, why do we still have a mixture control? I’d assume a few O2 sensors and such and a computer could continuously give us optimal mixture or am I missing something? I know some are going to say cost but let’s face it, the automotive industry has been purely FI for years if not decades so it’s not like they need to invent a new technology. And yes while cars don’t see the altitude changes a airplane this just means a larger scale range in the calculations, nothing more. Thanks.

It is fuel injected. As far as why we still have mixture control, I presume it boils down to economics. In other words, getting FAA certification on an electronic fuel system for a Skyhawk or IO-360 is cost prohibitive. Not realistic to compare automotive manufacturing with FAA certification and airplanes. People who don't understand those economics already complain about high cost of airplanes, would they pay even more for electronic fuel system that provides an easier starting sequence or not having to lean for altitude?

The sad thing is that after World war II there was a push to have an airplane in every garage along with your car and they were actually affordable in that way then. Now, the cost of a lightly used single engine trainer like the 172S is basically six times the cost of the two-story brick home I bought in 2007. Essentially, the common person simply cannot afford an airplane, either to operate it or to maintain it. Nor is it really feasible to even rent one. It's really sad and frustrating because I loved flying. All 120 hours of it. 😭

It looks like you’re trying to stall the plane with ESP active. It appears as though you were getting an under speed notification and ESP was fighting you and kicking in. I’m guessing this plane, being as new as it is, has ESP and maybe you didn’t disengage it? If that’s the case, it’s going to recover itself pretty much.

I agree with most of what was said, but in. 2023 it's time for Cessna to, without compromising the reliability add the parachute. I prefer a plane that most of the time does not need the parachute, like the 172, but you never know when a plane is going to suffer an accident.

Purely a cost/benefit relationship. If you look at number of fatalities as a measure of which airplanes need parachutes the most - I believe the 172 would be way down the list. Ironically, the airplane that would be high on the list is the SR22, which has a parachute.
