The navigators actually used to jump out of the hatch at the underside of the plane and then parachute down. At high speeds this was obviously still very dangerous, but they still had a relatively big chance to survive.

A few other things I feel I have to comment on. No, the RAF did not keep a Vulcan flying until 2015. After the aircraft left active service in 1984 they kept one airframe serviceable until 1993 for display purposes. After 1993 that airframe was sold off into private hands, and didn't fly for many years. Eventually an organisation called Vulcan To The Sky was formed and they restored her and returned her to flight on the Civil register in 2008. She then flew for displays with VTTS until 2015, when she sadly had to be retired once again for various reasons. A few tips on the landing, I'm not a Vulcan pilot myself, however I've had the opportunity to discuss at some length with former Vulcan pilots. Firstly, come in steep, that allows you to keep the nose down and be able to see the runway far better, use airbrakes as required to keep the speed low. 200kts is way too high for touchdown, 150 odd should be aight. and when you touchdown, you can kill speed far better than just using the parachute, wheel brakes and airbrake, there's a technique commonly used known as either aerobraking or body braking, basically once the main gear is on the ground you hold the nose high and basically wheelie the aircraft down the runway, that presents the whole bottom surface of the aircraft to the oncoming airflow and creates vast amounts of drag that will slow you down, I believe I remember being told you held the nose up like this until 60kts, then allowed it to gently sink and place the nose gear on the runway, you obviously don't want to wait too long and have the nose gear slam down as it may cause damage. And a final point on supersonic flight, NEVER take the Vulcan supersonic.... unless you have a death wish. The aircraft suffered from really severe Mach tuck, which basically means as you break the sound barrier it has a tendency to try to pitch nose down, combine that with the fact that the shockwave jams the control surfaces, which prevents you pulling out of the dive, and the fact that the Vulcan is a pretty slippery airframe, even at throttles idle with the airbrakes out it's pretty hard to get her slowed up in a high angle dive, that all makes for a lethal combination. Always keep it below Mach 0.95.

I’ve actually been under an Avro Vulcan in RAF museum. Let me tell you, it’s *HUGE* and I’ve always been scared to walk under the wing in case it collapses because it’s an old plane. The bomb bay is huge and big enough to carry a good sized bomb. I couldn’t sit under it for more than 2 minutes.

1) Vulcan wasn't supersonic. 2) It did drop bombs on the falklands (not argentina) 3) There were escape procedures for the other crew (equipped with parachutes and crawl out of a hatch) 4) Didn't have defensive armaments because it was designed as a high altitude bomber (higher altitude than interceptors of the day), later became a low altitude bomber.

This is the plane that got me into planes, I saw XH558 (the last flying Vulcan) on its retirement tour of the UK and you can not imagine how spectacular it is to see that thing go over your head at a low altitude

The Avro who built the Vulcan and the Avro that built the 146/RJ are actually kind of linked through British Aerospace which most of the British aicraft companies eventually became, they even used the same factories like Woodford

Now THAT is a proper British plane Yes Sir It is a very interesting aircraft. It did bomb the Falkland island in 1982 and it was a success. One of the bombs hit the airport on the island. This made it impossible for the Argentinians from operating there. It also had a white paint job in the early cold war to help deflect a blast from a nuke if one was dropped. The camouflage paint job was made because of the creation of surface to air missiles. This meant the plane would have to fly at lower altitude hence the green and grey. I saw it fly at RIAT many times. It's sound was like thunder :D

A few years ago I saw this plane on its last flight and it is one of my best aviation memories.

Vulcan XA903, was used as a flying test bed to test the mighty Olympus 593 Mk. 610. The Vulcan's Olympus 101 and 301 engines were also used as a blueprint to design Concorde's much more powerful engines. Vulcan's max speed was mach 0.96 and it never went supersonic apart from one time where it oversped and the wings broke off and only a few Vulcans could howl as they had to have a very specific inlet design. XH588 which is at Doncaster Robin Hood just above where I live in Sheffield is the Vulcan which was grounded in 2015, it is still airworthy, however, due to changes in law, an aircraft now has to have a backup hydraulics system, which the vulcan doesn't. I remember hearing it in air shows, loud enough of a howl to set off car alarms.

They used around 12 of these to get to the Falkland Islands from Acention island to bomb one runway, and yes it was conventional bombs. Each aircraft would keep refuelling each other until one was left with enough fuel to reach the Falklands and do its job. It's a great story and took brave flight crews, you should find the story on RU-vid

There is one of those in a small aircraft museum near me in Sunderland, England I was lucky enough to get inside one day, the cockpit is even more cramped IRL than it looks in the video.

In the Falklands war they did drop bombs on an airfield, I think they made over 50 refueling missions between their squadrons. None were shot down.

the Vulcan flew down to the falklands and bombed the living shit out of it.. the sheer size, sound and presence of the vulcan was enough to send the argies running for the hills. the engines are rolls royce olympus (as used in concorde) there are no flaps because it doesn't need them, the wing area is so large that it can land incredibly slowly without stalling. this wing area also allows it to out perform fighter jets at high altitute. the bomber could also take off almost vertically whilst fully laden with munitions. the sound of this aircraft on full power sucks the air out of your lungs. i have seen it fly in person 5 times, (tail XH558) and I cried when it was retired in 2018. it is without a doubt, the most iconic recent British jet. surpassed in icon status only by the Piston engined spitfire, and I would say also, the TSR2. (look up the tsr2)

Fun fact the Vulcan crew wore eye patches like a pirate just incase a nuclear bomb went off

There is a Vulcan at the Strategic Air Museum west of Omaha, NE. I was there the day they had the Vulcan open for small groups to go inside. I sat in the pilots seat which is 3 floors up from the entry ladder. Very cool and impressive airplane.

With your aircraft carrier post that you did one month ago I've got a story about my grate great grandfather, where the hock that stops you failed and his plane flew towards the edge. Luckily the safety wire around the edge cought the plane and the plane hung half on the carrier and half off. They escacaped and live. Also he had 2 air collisions and still lived to tell the tales. But eventually hi died in 2015.😢.

Vulcans dropped bombs on Argentine airfields. Operation Black Buck. The bombs weren’t nuclear and were standard large ordinance. 11 fuel tankers were needed to fly them down. To Ascension Island, and the to Argentina

The vulcan did drop bombs, operation black buck at the Falklands. Never went to Argentina, nor was it supersonic. It was subsonic although it did test concorde's engines without after burner.. XH558 the last flying vulcan stopped flying for the raf in 1986, didn't fly again until 2007 thanks to the vulcan to the sky, she remained airworthy until 2015 where she's now living a life at Doncaster robin hood where it'll occasionally do taxi runs, but not as many as it used to do when it lived at Bruntingthorpe in Leicestershire.

This plane flew like a fighter jet but so big, she was a beautiful plane. Sadly she is grounded now. Her amazing “howl” from her engines when she flew was cool. Beautiful plane.
