Listening to these guys gives me the biggest regret in life - I always wanted to be fighter pilot as a kid and never followed it through. Great, great interview and to pick the Mosquito as Garry's plane he never flew shows what a true, raw pilot he is. You interview so well - let the guys talk, no interruptions. Superb content.

This guy is awesome. Thoroughly delightful interview, amazing career and he flew the jet I dreamed about back in the day. His enthusiasm with the description of the takeoff was absolutely the best. I’ve asked many pilots “what’s it like?” and they describe it but not like this. This guy seems to appreciate that whatever his qualifications or right stuff, he was still fortunate to get to to this and it’s just a really cool thing, period.

My old man had nearly two thousand hours in the eagle... he flew it later, 1999-2015, but he would have some different things to say about fighting vipers and hornets. New tactics probably had a role to play, but of the teen series fighters, the eagle is definitely still top dog.

First time I see a dogfight portrayed as a contest between two nearly stalling, close to static planes hanging on their engines and fighting whoever will fly slower :o I guess it was a bit scripted by restricting themselves to guns and rear aspect missiles but it was fun for sure, a return to the era of Red Baron but using modern supersonic jets. Great guest who served in the most intense times, the cold war. Thanks.

Great interview. Lots of fun to watch. Cool guy and seems like he gives credit where it is due especially to the Navy guys and their skills. The respect is mutual with Navy F-14 pilots I have always heard from. One thing maybe was a joke when he said "why would you ask that question?" [on who won in F-14 vs F-15]. History shows there were exercises where F-14 won over the F-15. The AIMEVAL/ACEVAL is one example in 1980 where overall F-14A came out with a 2:1 advantage over the F-15.
@bazej1080
@bazej1080 3 года назад
F-14 and F-15 never fought each other during ACEVAL/AIMVAL - and this was one of the main principle of the whole program. Only against other planes stimulating Soviet interceptors.
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 3 года назад
@@bazej1080 They still did and it is very well known . I would not be saying it, if it was not the case. That is how the final report said the F-14 had a 2:1 advantage over the F-15 (which was mainly to improve ACM training as lessons learned). There are many pilots who have spoken about it. 'Hoser' Satrapa is famous as he had a gun kill picture. You can read all about the ACM that took place at Nellis against 415th squadron in the book by Paul Gilchrist. He was one of the pilots who took part in the F-14 vs F-15 dogfights. Here is Hoser's F-14 pipper balancing on the F-15 pbs.twimg.com/media/EC_tvw-XkAEUI7p?format=jpg&name=small
@Vifam7
@Vifam7 3 года назад
Such exercises don't really mean much (except for those who were part of it) in determining which is the superior aircraft. It may just mean that one side had better tactics or simply had better pilots that particular day. Exercises are never meant to determine which side has the better machine.
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 3 года назад
@@Vifam7 Very true. Totally agree. I think he mentions the same thing as well. It reall came down to the tactics. He said both of them were very powerful and big fighters.
@Savage_Viking
@Savage_Viking 3 года назад
Even the A-4 and F-5 had a 4:1 kill ratio against the F-14 during exercises until crews figured out tactics to use against these small fighters. It’s all relative and usually comes down to the pilot.

T-38s have slots for cannons??? It's mostly just a stripped F-5? Why under-sling A minigun?
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 3 года назад
The Northrop designation for the F-5 is the N-156F. The T-38 is the N-156T. The F-5 was actually designed BEFORE the T-38 but didn't win any USAF orders. They adapted the F-5 design into the T-38. The T-38 was selected as the first supersonic trainer by the USAF shortly after the failure to sell the F-5. This happened in the late 1950s; the F-5 did not get backing for the military assistance programs (Third World re-equipping with maintainable hardware) until 1962.
