I don't know if it's a satisfying answer but the reason for every "why was it designed this way" about the Schmid is simplicity or ease of testing. Functionally, it's a generic towed glider test rig with powered wings added on using the simplest transmission he could make work. Keep in mind that all of your gear strut drag and takeoff issues were avoided because it was a tow launched glider with drop off wheels.

Easy to follow and fun to watch! You did well pacing the info with the clips. Another highlight's the smooth voice; you mentioned having a professional setup at some point iirc, but hearing it in a full video really does it justice.

I don't, actually. Borrowed a mic in one of the older ones I think, but this is all on a garbage astro a50 mic. I just had the presence of mind to do a noise reduction pass in audacity lol. Thanks, in any case

Wild build! Flyout is pretty much the "game" I have always wanted despite being pretty bare bones I am pretty confident it will see similar developer and community/ modder uptake as original KSP and I am really excited to be along for the ride.

An issue with manned ornithopters was that the wings broke. So I'd say having long non-moving wings and smaller moving ones might be a nice solution. So the basic idea is to have different sized wings and on too much stress the longer wings stop moving. So I think the Schmid/Smith ornithopter is a good point to start from as you can take so much knowledge from existing airplanes. It still feels as if many wing pairs just emulate a huge formable wing pair.

I had an 4-blade ornithopter I made pre-release based on one of my ultralight concepts pre-release if you want to see one of the early ornithopter experiments. I made one using a system similar to your own, as well as one that worked on a glitch drive to get to speed, but I won't be releasing that one. I'll just need to update the materials since it was made before the material update. Also, it may help a lot to put your mic on "mono" or any single channel. I got interested to see if anyone had more success than I did after watching Dune the other night. Good luck with your builds!
@decofox6789
@decofox6789 3 месяца назад
This glitch-drive of yours: did it have a way of controlling blade pitch independently of amplitude? Or are we talking about a literal phantom force sort of glitch? In any case I'd love to see either of them. In any case, I've got them up through 440 knots now. Just last night I got a working transitioning VTOL, but it flies like shit. Better soon, hopefully. Cheers!
@messier82ac
@messier82ac 3 месяца назад
@@decofox6789 it's more of a "phantom force" sort of glitch drive, I couldn't for the life of me get enough thrust to get airborne with the normal ornithopter movement, so I found out you can quite literally generate force in any direction you want using certain parts. I can shoot you a DM about it later, the mods don't want us talking about game exploits in public 😂
@decofox6789
@decofox6789 3 месяца назад
@@messier82ac sure, I'm curious. Don't imagine I'll use it in these, though. It's the getting-it-to-fly process I'm in it all for. Still, helps to know how the game engine works. I come from Garry's Mod, where determining how to use ropes to glitch source engine object drag made the first autorotating rotorcraft in that game possible.

This is so cool! I'm trying to build my own now, but can't figure out what type of input would be best for an ornithopter based on the second type of flapping mechanism. Right now, I have it set to a slider with gravity. That works, but you eventually need to constantly be holding the 'throttle' button. What kind of input are you using?
@decofox6789
@decofox6789 5 месяцев назад
Same thing you are: I'm holding throttle down. technically I bound a second input to shift that just advances by 1000 every tick (as fast as the joint will actuate). I'm not using gravity, though, so the joint stays where it left off when shift is released. That design isn't throttleable, but I have yet to find a good way to solve that problem. If you just want to do away with holding the key, you can set the input rate way over 1000 and then the joint will spend ages trying to catch up. If you set it absurdly high you're pretty much toggling it on for good. No way to turn it off, though.

This video was of way higher quality than i expected from a channel this small. The only thing that might need work is the thumbnail, but the voice, script, and build are all awesome. If you improve your thumbnail (and maybe get a channel icon) theres a good chance you may takeoff.
@decofox6789
@decofox6789 5 месяцев назад
I appreciate the kind words. For as much time as voiceovers and editing take, I suppose I should probably put the effort in on the thumbnail. I'm torn because "RU-vid" thumbnails drive me up the wall, but maybe we'll give it a whirl. appreciated.

4:30 I'm curious about what you mentioned there about KSP2. What did the rig look like? Did you find a workaround to the lack of robotic parts in the game?
@decofox6789
@decofox6789 5 месяцев назад
Literally just a fuckton of traction wheels with wings attached radially. I spun the entire vehicle for that test. That kind of setup works in KSP1, but I wasn't getting any lift vector im KSP2. Not sure what they're doing with their lift simulation to manage that though.

I know the subject is ornithopters, but I can't help but ask about your flying wing designs. Can you post any of the ones used in this video on discord? I'd love to pick them apart and study how they work. I'm trying to experiment with them, but am having quite the not-so-fun time. Great video!
@decofox6789

Sure. Most of them never really got released-specc'd (got bored and couldn't be assed to do landing gear doors etc) but feel free to DM me and I'll send you whatever/talk about how I did them (it's mostly back-twist towards the wingtips)

Use an engine with gearboxes and a mini prop and a mini counter prop to use throttle for flapping, might not be as accurate if it calculates the super small props but would save finger cramps or Scripting, just an idea though I havnt tried this
@decofox6789

You can attach objects to propellers? That would definitely be way better, but I hadn't gotten it to work in the past. Is there a trick to it?
