A new series of videos for those that are new to fly tying, to accompany my new book, 'fly tying for beginners' out later this year. Here I am showing techniques that may look challenging, but are totally achievable with a little patience and practice. I have slowed down the tying and explain every step in detail. If you are struggling, and have a question, post it in the comments box below, and I will try and help. Good luck!

I live in north west Oregon, and I'm blessed with trout streams and tributaries abound... The stone fly nymph and it's emerger are pretty much all of the flies that i tie anymore, and i fish them all year round. They are a hardy fly and really hold up to the conditions and beating against branches and rocks and the constant hammering from to those brookies and brownies...I fish them through gravel beds and rarely snag...I bring a kit with me and will model a live fly for color and size now and then... Nice legs by the way,... I liked, Shared and Subscibed. Now I'm gonna go tie one on... Thank you Kenneth Clarke

I haven’t tried a dubbing loop yet so this fly has inspired me to try it. Haven’t got a loop weight but I’m sure that I can improvise.

Barry, you are an amazing fly tiyer. Your flies are pure perfection. This hare's ear nymph is the most beautiful piece of basic art I have ever seen. I will be tying some of these with and without a bead head.

This is one of the best flies I've ever seen tied of any kind. I only hope to be able to match it someday. I've only tied for 14 months, and if I were to take my time to do this good it would likely take me over an hour to tie this fly this well.

Thanks. Once you have mastered the techniques and proportions in this pattern, it only takes a few minutes to tie. Thanks Barry for sharing all. Doesn't make sense though, as a highly educated individual (your credentials as a professional photographer), you would use a barbless hook to protect the catch and at the same time you would advocate the use of lead wire.

Overall excellent as always. For some things (loading the dubbing loop, spinning it up) it might help to back up the camera so there is a wider field of view and more of the process is visible.

What beginners will learn, soon enough, is that the most experienced, "match the hatch," fly fisherman will always have this pattern and PT in several shades and sizes in their box. They are timeless. Barry, do you have your beginner vids in a compilation for sale? I would not feel right downloading and using them for training classes. PM if you wish.

This is an old standard that I use a lot in various sizes from 12- 16 . I find it funny many younger fly fishers will ask me what I used to catch the trout I just released. When I tell them a hares ear , they most times will ask . What is that ? With so many flies being invented the old go to flies are sometimes forgotten. Thanks

Might be a silly question but can I ask why do you use gold tinsel rather than gold copper wire like you used in the PT?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 11 месяцев назад
Hi, the pattern really, the gold ribbed hares ear has always used gold oval tinsel, whereas the pheasant tail nymph was originally tied with copper wire. In fact, the pheasant tail nymph used copper wire instead of tying thread!

Hi, nice pattern, a bit fussy but a good fly that catches a lot of big trout. What we don’t need is that music blaring in the background, your choice, not mine and I gave up watching because it got a bit too much. Harera
