Very good explanation. In my case I live very close to an FM broadcast tower, we have two local channels, but never had TV interference. The broadcast power for both channel is 500 Watts so they can be received even in the countryside. In the analog days TV was broadcasting on VHF High and UHF, now all TV stations are on UHF. We never had Franken FM channel, VHF Low band was abandoned in the early 70s due to strong interferences and the TV channel was move on VHF High. Regarding FM the problem I noticed that those two local FM channels interferes with neighboring channels, so there is a 1 MHz space between the stations. For example the first local channel is on 89.9 MHz, the neighbor channels are on 88.8 MHz and the other is on 91.0 MHz. The channel on 91.0 MHz is a little weak and the stereo reception is somehow affected but listenable. The second local channel is on 107.7 MHz but in some cases you can hear it excellent on 108 MHz. The neighbor channel is on 107.3 and unfortunatelly the stereo reception is affected, even on mono there are problems. In Europe FM stations can broadcast on both odd and even frequencies. No need for an FM Trap. In fact FM-VHF-UHF combiners are very popular so we can have both DTV and excellent stereo reception, and an amplified splitter. The problem is with the 3G, 4G, 5G on UHF band 4G, 5G filters must be mandatory in UHF antennas and combiners, I also live next to phone tower and without a 4G filter, TV channels break up, with the filter on I dont have problems.

the 5G filters might work by doing an attenuation in the bands concerned with the FCC frequency plan for 3-5G signals but am not quite sure of that

FM broadcasts are line of sight, meaning that any obstructions, variations in terrain, trees, etc., can affect signal reception. As far as distance, in addition to the above line of sight considerations, FM signals are generally limited to the curvature of the earth, probably 70 miles (112 km) maximum distance. Another factor is broadcast power.

Having trouble picking up KTRK Channel 13 Houston TX from 65 miles away. Bought the largest VHF-HI / UHF outdoor horizontally-polarized antenna (basically a yagi) that I could find, and installed it at a location 65 miles NNE of KTRK's TV transmitter site. I understand that channel 13 is 6MHz wide, and centered at 213 MHz. My spectrum analyzer set for the range of 174-216 MHz indicates strong signals for Ch 8 and 11, and then 13 is drastically weaker for some reason, even though all the Houston TV signals emanate from the Missouri City antenna farm. Much closer to my TV location that I was troubleshooting northeast of Houston, there exists a 100kW FM transmitter on 106.9 MHz, and its signal is hitting the antenna well within the frontal lobe. When I do the math, I find that when I multiply 106.9 by 2, I get 213.8 MHz. Could this be a harmonic that is interfering with Ch 13? If so, then it looks like I need the FM Trap. Just want to know: Is the second harmonic a factor that I need to consider? Given that the FM channel is 200 KHz wide, actually means that there are likely second harmonics probable within a range of 213.6 to 214.0 MHz. Let me know what you think.

I'd say it's certainly possible. Second or third harmonics may cause interference, especially with such a strong broadcast power (100kW in this case), and your antenna receiving it head-on. Might be worth trying the FM trap. I find a lot of intereference issues are very much trial-and-error processes.

I tried the tunable kind and it weakened the signal so I say no. But I was tuning a classical FM station. The interference was better to leave it alone. FM traps are not good for FM antennas that share TV as well. I sure miss them VHF only antennas and separate antenna jacks. Also 300 ohm shielded cable. Coax is not the best for UHF TV. 73

If you’re trying to eliminate interference from a TV signal then an FM trap might help. But if you’re using the antenna for FM reception as well, then definitely that will not work out. 73

@@joe10117 I can't find anything on TV traps but the tuneable traps I have could trap channel 6 sound but that's all history digital is different I don't think I can tune channel 6 on my FM radio anymore. Of course channel 6 is far away next time I drive near channel 6 I will try tuning it in on the bottom of the FM dial. Might have to use a portable radio. All this digital crap don't let you tune in the cracks anymore. 73

I honestly have never used a fm filter trap and when i did have one built in with antenna i didnt see improvement. . Maybe people with people that try to get rf 2 - 7 may seen a improvement. Buying the cellular filter trap is better for most people . For best results put it before the preamp. so amp doest boost the noise. I also i do not know why you want to cancel out radio when some tv converter boxes accept radio channles as auido only channles.

Hi Leo, it’s a potential source of noise for TV antennas; if someone has ruled out 5G/LTE or other sources of RF noise then FM interference might be something to investigate. Also, aren’t audio-only channels TV channels (usually subchannels)? They would be carried on some part of the TV band, not on the FM spectrum? Is that correct?

obviously if doesn't have any TV channel on VHF frequencies then won't get any benefits of apply an FM trap to the line

Most markets have at least one VHF channel. Many markets have multiple channels broadcasting on VHF. An FM trap MAY help with interference, but it depends on the source of the noise.

@@NorthcoasterHobby Amazon does not show big numbers for reviews. And the reviews they have don't show any great advantage or improvement. There seems to be much more filters for blocking LTE and 5G. Blocking the fm band sounds like a great idea, but no one seems to be making a great FM blocker......at any price. Instructions on how to actually make a circuitboard for blocking FM would be wonderful.
