Special thanks to a Vogons member: Thermalwrong, I got a drive installed on a laptop that's missing a hard drive caddy by wiring a 44-pin IDE connector to the motherboard based on the multimeter test and it didn't work at first because I missed a connection on the last pin.
So I now have two FMA7600 laptops with solid state drives (the DGi uses an SD2IDE and this one is CF2IDE) and all I need are another Ethernet/Modem PCMCIA card and a GamePort so I can do dial-in link playing and connect mice to both of the systems and keyboards so my dad and I can do some DOS/Windows link gaming with joysticks.
Granted, the solution isn't the best looking in the world, but if it works, I'm happy.
I added electrical tape around the connector so it doesn't short itself against the proprietary connector on the motherboard.
