If you were running a Process west Top mount you'll still make that power figure and keep the spool, the stock sti top mount it's limited to what psi it can hold and still remain thermostatically efficient

They cost a fortune, also heatsoak whilst sat in traffic is still an issue, and the other issue with air going over the scoop over 100mph is still there. Top mount is fine for a road car really.

They are good but still nowhere near as good as a fmic. The wrong location so suffer heat soak and issues with airflow at speed missing the scoop altogether 👍

@@stock.cars.2ned If new hardware (or better fuel) pushes out the safe limit of boost and/or ignition timing: (a) changing neither of those would show a small difference if even measurable; (b) changing the tune parameters to make use of the better hardware will show the meaningful difference. Option (b) is probably the most useful guide to car-modifying enthusiasts. I didn't convert my car to full-time E85 only to run conservative petrol-standard boost and timing and the same power.

The reason why I like this channel and maybe a very few other ones is the presentation of content. Would have been great to show 1.4 bar vs 1.4 bar, but I’d be happy to push 1.6 on both setups with proper iat compensations set up. I’ve tested all 3 setups tmic,fmic, and custom water to air and wta wins all with ease.
@PedroFTeixeira

I thought the same. A fair comparison would be at the same boost.
@racedynamix
@racedynamix 2 месяца назад
Noted. The car will be back again at some point and we will try and do some more filming 👍 The objective was to see the difference in power though from an optimised map on a tmic to an optimised map on fmic. Regardless of boost the fmic enables more power to be made. Running the tmic at that boost on that car would not make more power than it did at 1.4 hence why it was mapped at 1.4. The better efficiency of the fmic at removing heat allows more boost to be used.
@benc911
@benc911 2 месяца назад
I'd just like to add, (my car by the way ) My previous mapper did add more boost at first with the top mount but it wasn't making more power and was creating heat. The car was happy where it got mapped. Plus it was a warm day outside and was mapped on the road. This example is of my setup. All setups will give different results. My aim from this video was just to show the outright difference from a turbo that's rated in the low 400s where boost levels will be high and so will the heat. Could of easily of got a big 500bhp turbo and run lower boost to achieve 450bhp, but I wanted a turbo that gives great responce and boost that comes in nice and early like oem. You can go crazy onhow indepth the tests are, but this kind of test with this setup just shows very quickly what a front mount is capable of. And shows the limitations of the top mount at this level.

For those that skipped through it, 0.2 bar of boost was added to achieve the actual dyno gains (10-12 whp gained per psi). The challenge with the intercooler is determining what you need in a dynamic situation to maintain stable IAT values at your selected boost level. I would be VERY interested to see how a Spec C top-mount factory I/C with Auto water spray compares to a front mount in terms of being able to push the boost.
@racedynamix
@racedynamix 2 месяца назад
👍 The ic auto spray doesn't tend to make much difference on the dyno from when I have tested in the past (pre RU-vid days) I will, however, see whether a suitable car arrives to making a video of the test going forward. Size and location will work against a spec c tmic compared to a fmic though. Thanks for watching and the comment 🙏
@racedynamix
@racedynamix 2 месяца назад
@@stock.cars.2ned more boost doesn't always mean more power hence why it was capped at 1.4 bar on the tmic map. Running more boost on the tmic meant that much less ignition could be run and even with more airflow the power made was less... Sorry for not going through a million different scenarios of the tuning, but this is someone's car, not a shop owned test mule where I can do endless takes for the video. The comparison was optimised and safe map for tmic vs optimised and safe map for fmic and as such valid.

@@stock.cars.2ned I think it's a fine test, and glad the boost increase was shown... but selecting an optimal intercooler for an application is a real pain in the ass and takes a lot more logging time than a day in the dyno can provide.
@MrSaturn7085
@MrSaturn7085 2 месяца назад
@@racedynamix I understood the take-away - a more efficient intercooler can allow to you operate your compressor further outside of it's efficiency island and squeak a bit more power out of the setup. I wanted to love my TMIC... I monitored temperature with an IAT sensor in the TMIC and the TMIC would easily get ~20F hotter at wide open throttle; any additional throttle outside of casual cruising would heat up the TMIC. I installed an FMIC, transferred over the same IAT sensor, and saw the exact opposite effect, as you mentioned, it gets cooler the faster you go. It also cools off quickly after heat soaking while parked or in traffic.

@racedynamix
@racedynamix 2 месяца назад
I think that is wrong... Fitting a fmic requires fitting an induction kit and that changes fueling. On this car the induction kit was there for both tmic and fmic so I didn't change fueling at all. It took more ignition timing and because the air was cooled better it allowed me to run more boost. 👍

There is no issue with hawk scoop and air flow till 480hp,always You can put bigger scoop.You gain more air as sti top mount is to small to take more. Process West top mount with scoop undertray is best to go with that power level. I will more worry about heat soak trough air cone filter ,should be in a sealed box with air snorkel attached and about brakes going above 100mph on track.For track just remove engine undertray .Than You block radiator with front mount intercooler giving it less air to cool it down. Engine oil cooler could help to plus meth map.
@racedynamix

It will always make way more power wuth a fmic at that level. A fmic does not reduce the cooling of the radiator at all in my experience.

Great vid. The interesting thing here is the spool hasn't changed on the graph is that maybe to do with altitude? I am in an area where we are at 5000ft above see level we do see the difference in response from a front mount to top mount almost 1000-1500rpm specially on the 2.0 but the end power figure does vary. The 2.5s however really do perform better with front mounts.

I've only seen them on videos. Only difference I see is the quality and fitment tend to be better. Great video :) I've got a question re 2.5's. Despite the STI having a redline starting at 7000rpm the 2.5 ALWAYS seems to start bleeding power at 6000-6200rpm. Even with the AVCS they seem to struggle, but why? is it a breathing issue (head ports/valves etc) or a displacement/stroke issue? Part of the reason I went from 2.5 to 2.1 on the Type R was to gain an extra 1000rpm of rev range as you could feel the power leaving the chat after 6k rpm. Might be worth doing a video on 2.0 vs 2.1 vs 2.3 vs 2.5, as I know the Gobstoppers are all 2.0 but people think you need a 2.3 for monster power.

No extra power bra.. the front mount actually creates a heat trap that soaks everything with heat and is pointless in every way, unless…. You have your radiator in the trunk like the rally cars that use front mounts. A well ducted and proper sized top mount intercooler will yield quicker throttle response and recover from heat soak quicker, as well as not blocking the radiator from doing its job cooling., top mount for the win on your average daily driven rally car. Unless you move the rad to the back. Then front mount obviously would be better.
