You wanna make awesome stuff with Foam Clay? In this video I will give you the 3 No Non-Sense Boiled Down Basics that will help you get started and make shaping it easier!
Get Foam-Mo Here: amzn.to/3o4MxWV
There are some long videos out there talking about foam clay, in fact, some of them are mine,
but in this video I'm going to zero in on the 3 most important nuggets of info you need to help you know how to use Foam-Mo to Up your Cosplay Game as fast as possible! I've boiled it down to the most important basics to know so you can take action and start working with it right away!
I want you to be able to create amazing magical things for your cosplays and Foam-Mo is one great way to do so. You can shape and sculpt it into anything you want, it is malleable and forgiving, and when it dries is very light weight and works great for horns, dragon, heads, trim and edging detail, and you can even press it into silicone molds to create super fine detail that you can't get out of foam otherwise!

Thanks a lot for the tips! Just got into foam clay molding after mistaking it for regular air-dry clay at the dollar store, and it has definately been a discovery ^__^- I find out that it's quite simmilar to working with fondant, specially regarding how it sticks and behaves with hydration. One tip I use is working on a sprayed plastic sheet, so that the piece does not stick. You can also spray stamps so that they don't stick for texturing.

Hey, great vid! Q: once it’s dry does it have any give to it? (Say if u were to press really hard with your thumb, would it be hard as a rock or give and bounce back a little?) annnnnnnd once dry can u stick pins in it? I’m looking for something for sculpting details on a a custom dress form that could accept compression/tension-pressure (say, from tightened straps-think corsetry) that would have a semi-equivalent amnt if working give to it, as layered belting leather, like a traditional custom shoe last. @CosplayApprentice

Check out my video on making Hiccups chest plate or helmet. I show a great way to get it to stick to the foam. You score little cross-hatching pattern on the foam and then press the foam clay into it and shape it. Because it has a slight shrinkage as it dries it grips tight around those crosshatching and holds tight with no need for glue and will match the curve of your piece perfectly :)

This is such an informative video! Thank you! I do have a question, do you have to prime or seal before painting? I’m planning on trying out foam clay for myself, but I see other people priming it with Plasti-Dip, is this recommended?
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 11 месяцев назад
Thank you so much for watching!! :) Yes I would highly recommend sealing it with something before painting. Plastidip or latex or something. This does two things, it helps use less paint so it doesn’t get sucked into the foam on the first coats, but even more so, it blocks access from the air to the piece which will help prevent it or slow the drying process. Because of the nature of it being air drying, if it continues to be exposed to the air it will keep drying and eventually become more brittle. Depending on the size of the piece I find it best to seal it within the first 24 hours, bigger pieces may take a little longer to reach optimal stage of being cured :)

@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 3 года назад
One 300g tub of Foam-Mo will be more than enough, you'll have left over for other projects, the Helmet and Pauldrons could probably be done with just a 4mm pack and a 2mm pack and you'd definitely have some 2mm and probably some 4mm left over. I'm not sure how much the Chestplate would take I'll have to look at the pattern and try to guess on that.

It is still good, that is just a little bit of settling, if you just knead the foam-no back into itself, it will just blend back into mix. Unless the foam clay is all dried out it still should be usable :)

I got a tub of this clay and am super excited to use it. Problem is, as I'm sculpting with it, I am trying to sculpt details into it with silicone tools and the foam is not holding details. The foam is expanding back into the crevices I'm sculpting and I can't find anything about how to fix that problem or if it can even be fixed and I have to just dremel details later after it dries. I haven't seen this problem posted anywhere and this video seems to prove that it isn't normally a concern. I have tried adding water to the lump of clay, stretching and kneading, adding water to the surface and letting it set for a bit. There is also an inordinant amount of air bubbles in the foam clay itself that kneading and stretching doesn't seem to fix entirely and when it dries, the bubbles colapse leaving cavities in my sculpts. Any tips on that front? Thanks so much! Love your videos and am looking forward to trying out WTFoam when it's back on the market!
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice Год назад
Sorry for the delay in responding. With Foam-Mo, you have to think of sculpting it differently that traditional clay, with regular clay you and just kind of press in, or scoop out and carve into. Foam-Mo is more elastic in nature and so the sculpting process becomes more of a push and pull to pull foam clay to where you want it and push it in or out to shape. I would recommend metal sculpting tools. Hopefully that helps :)

I'm not sure on that, I haven't tried it for that use. It would fall apart in water on its own but if you coated it it might be fine. If you try it let me know so I can tell others that might be looking to do the same thing :)

I have a quality question. I am a second time buyer and I opted for the big tub this time. The first 300g tub I bought was awesome and worked well. This 900g tub not so much.. the consistency is like silly putty and even in the storage bag it slides to the lowest point and sticks with flashing like thinness to where it was touching the bag. At the bottom I noticed darker gray specks. I kneaded it thinking it hadn't been mixed properly with no improvement. This has been very problematic on my project. It slides to the lowest point even after I've taken my heat gun to the outer layer hoping to dry it out in hope that it won't move as much. I am not putting thick layers on and after it moves it becomes paper thin at the higher points and very thick in the crevices. I didn't have these issues with the 300g tub. Is there something that I can do to the 900g tub to improve it?

Does it have an odour? I'm really sensitive to the smell of EVA foam. I spent about $200 on foam puzzle mats to protect my floors (I made a home gym) but it wasn't long before the smell of them gave me a headache and made me feel nauseous; so with regret I had to throw them out. Either way, I thought I'd ask because I don't wanna make cosplay armour/weapons if it's going to make me sick at conventions and if it turns out it does, then your help will help me with deciding on going with foam clay or look for alternatives. Thanks!

@rrc3035 2 года назад
I know this is an older comment, but maybe you or someone else will find this helpful. I have some modeling foam (not fo-mo, but similar) and it basically smells like nothing. I can't detect any sort of odor in a fully dry piece. in fact I love how it leaves almost NO smell on my hands after working with it, unlike like other clays where you have to wash your hands a bunch. If there's any smell at all it's only noticeable when you're sanding it. Again I don't have the same brand, but maybe this helps.

I am considering this to add onto a current project, but did have a few questions. Since it water does make it easier to sculpt, how does it do in more rainy weather conditions? Or areas on a costume that might need to be lightly washed And if its a material that is not suitable for water even when dried, is there a way to prevent that?
@CosplayApprentice
@CosplayApprentice 3 года назад
Great question, I would recommend sealing the Foam-Mo with something like Plastidip once it has setup for about 24 hrs. This will give it a protective coat that will prevent it from havin issues in the rain or if you need to wipe it down with a wet rag. It is not recommended to have it submersed on water though. :)
