As I've said before, my gauge of success in camping or even in survival is, how comfortable can I sleep in the prevailing conditions, that's what drives me, and is why so much of our gear is sleeping related. If you can't sleep well at night, you won't enjoy camping much, and if in a survival situation, you'll find yourself drained and tired which leads to fatigue and poor decision making. This little series shows a good deal of what I do to be successful at sleeping in the wild. Thanks for watching !!

i love that you spend more time on your sleeping area, it annoys me when i watch videos and they just spend 5mins digging snow out and just put a tarp, so great videos, keep up the good work

Glad you enjoy it! Over the years I realized that much of making a camping experience a good one is being able to get a really good nights sleep. Nothing worse than waking in the morning after a fitful night and starting out tired. Thanks for watching.

Crazy life? Donno looks like the best life to me Perry I also am a business owner. Unfortunately I can’t pull that off. Not because the type of work or anything like that. I just don’t have anything near enough to be able to wake in the wilderness an straight to getting to work. Love the area I’m in just wish I had some camp areas closer. I have a lot of woods right across the street but most of the year there’s 6-12” of water that sits throughout it. Hell hammock mode in the pinch would work. But getting to it an waking putting feet into the swamp waters having to hang everything would definitely suck the fun out of things. Your definitely in a beautiful area

Hey Perry, nice job! Nice to see you’re into digging yourself a sofa, and then you can sleep on the couch overnight! And it also shows off our Utah snow. I agree with you that there’s much more comfort with the foot well. A friend and I snowshoe into the Wasatch, dig ourselves a sofa, and then set up a double fire pan just across the foot well. We put the fire pan on a branch frame so it doesn’t melt into the snow. We put a warming fire in 1/2 of the fire pan, and a Firebox stove in the other. We cook steak slices that he has rubbed the night before. That way we can cook individual pieces, and always have a warm bite, and not have to worry about trying to slice it on a plate on a lap in the cold. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Thanks VB, I really enjoy doing this. The nice thing is living so close to areas like this. I live at 6000 feet so it's just a little over 3000 feet drive to where I park and then a snowshoe in to camp. There is a big storm forecast in the next few days and provided I can get into the camp I'll be there during it. I've left all my gear there under the tree so it will be ready for me each night when I return.

Perry, can Wilderness Innovations' F͟l͟e͟e͟c͟e͟ ͟L͟i͟n͟e͟r͟ ͟S͟t͟u͟f͟f͟ ͟S͟a͟c͟k͟ accommodate one's footwear [to keep them dry, free from bugs or snakes and insulated enough to place small hand warmers in to keep the footwear warm in the winter] and small and lightweight enough to roll up and carry like your WI Scavenger Bag?
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 лет назад
Roald, Yes the Fleece Stuff sack is made of tarp fabric so it will keep things dry. It is a drawstring closure and can be drawn up tight. Ants could get in there, I've never had a problem with that though. The bag has no insulation, you could put hand warmers in your boots and then put them in the Sack though. The Sack will roll up pretty small. I'm not sure if you are asking if the Stuff Sack itself is insulated.
@roald48
@roald48 5 лет назад
You have answered the question, so I don't have to bring the footwear into the hammock or leave them out in the weather unprotected. Thank You,

Where did you get the collapsible shovel from?
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 лет назад
Matt, I'm not certain, I think I got it at Stewarts in Roosevelt, Utah last year at the end of winter, it was almost free, they were clearing out. It's really been a good shovel, Lifeline brand.

Matt Weber, I purchased a shovel like the one in the video for ice fishing, from Amazon.

It would be nice if you could put the weights for items in grams on the website for the gram weenies.
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 лет назад
Yeah, I get asked about that all the time. I have weights for most everything, but what I have is not satisfactory for the Ultralighters, the reason is that most all our gear can be customized, so the whole thing depends on what size, what insulating material and thickness, also a big part what cover fabrics are chosen. People can choose these things and the combinations they choose makes it almost impossible to post anything but a reference weight. In a blanket for example the choice of cover fabrics alone can make not grams of difference but up to 8 oz difference in weight. We aren't too much geared to light weight but rather to durability. We do have Ultralite Ponchos and tarps, but the blankets not so much. If someone asks I can direct them towards the lightest combination, but I can't predict the weight until we actually make one. Thanks for the comment - Perry

Do u show in any videos the Osni Cloak in a stuff sack. For a size reference. Or show it being stuffed into a pack. Again for size/compression references. Thanks.
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 лет назад
In several of my recent (last 10) videos I've showed setting up my sleeping and pulling the Osni out of it's stuff sack. In that sack it's only compressed perhaps half way. One of the big factors in how much it will compress is your choice of fabrics for the cover. Most of our cover fabrics are 30 or 40 denier, Ultraliters are using fabrics that are 7 or 10 denier. We have always leaned to durability over weight, since our origins are in the survival arena. The stuff sack for the Onsi is about 18" x 8.5" it could compress further to about 9 x 8.5. In this series of videos I have a couple that I show the Osni in. I rarely use a backpack, as I prefer pack frames to which I attach my various gear bags. Anyway you'll see some things in the videos that will show you. Thanks!!

Hi Perry, would the bottom of the beast be wet, especially after a few days of camping with no heat to dry it out? Most pads get condensation on the bottom from a warm body meeting the cold snow/ground underneath. Thanks for sharing.
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 5 лет назад
Thanks for asking Jacqueline, I've actually got a video in this series that deals with that issue. Most of the time the reason moisture accumulates is that it cannot escape. If I put a ground cloth under my Beast moisture will accumulate on the bottom of the Beast from my body, and frost will form on the underside of the ground cloth. Here's the trick, the colder it is the less you need to worry about condensation in the Beast. With the way we set it up, the Beast is part of your sleeping system, not just a pad to lay on. Since the Beast is totally breathable moisture is pushed through it into the snow. If snow is soggy and wet then you will be forced to use a ground cloth. I almost never use a ground cloth with the Beast year round. Here's the deal with the Beast being the foundation of the sleeping system, the blankets over you, a micro environment is created, if proper it is likely in the 70's inside there, the temperature inside being much warmer, and more humid than outside, any moisture inside is seeking to get out, so this moisture vapor travels to the outside, both under and over you. There is a kind of pressure inside that helps this along. Any place on the outside that I place a barrier, this moisture will stop at that point and accumulate, so if the snow underneath is not wet and soggy the moisture vapor will travel into the snow and be changed to ice crystals. If your foam pad is not sufficient insulation you can create soggy snow by melting it with your body heat. A 3" pad is recommended, in this video series I'm using a 2" pad. Most of the problems people have with getting wet underneath them is inadequate insulation in their pads. They try to reduce volume and weight. Whew, long answer, now you won't have to watch the video, haha.

Thanks V, my whole thing in camping is sleeping about 8 hours straight, or a least being comfortable enough to do it. I have a friend who used to always be up early, he'd have breakfast ready when everyone else woke up, then I got him into the system, now he sleeps till 8 am....downside, breakfast is no longer ready when we wake up, haha.
