I just fitted a set of these to my Audi A6 over the weekend. It has the MMI Basic Plus setup (Amplifier and Speakers by ASK). The original front setup is 3 way with the woofers at 2 ohm and crossed over very low, the mids covering most of the audio range, and then the tweeters as expected filling in the top. Now the problem with these AS3s and the stock amplifier setup is that the main 165mm driver is intended to cover a much larger frequency range, the output of the mid driver unit is substantially quieter at 1kHz than the stock . The result of this is that they initially sound pretty awful to be honest. However! all is not lost. It is very trivial to mix the front outputs back to full range by opening the Amplifier unit and bridging four points with 2 wires. I will post back with details if anyone is interested. After this the sound is superb.
This was a hard watch mate. You have a router. Make rings from MDF to mount to the pods before cutting the pods. Probably should have filled them with water to get an idea of their volume. Odds are Audi used the pod to limit air space. Most after market speakers are meant to sit in very large enclosures because the assumption is the internal door volume will be the enclosure.
Great work 😎 The oem woofers is 2ohm, the rest 4ohm. I may do the same work in a friends A6. We start with a Match PP 86DSP amplifier, next step will be speaker swap 🤘
I have shallow mount focal speakers in my e46 BMW but I'm not getting much midbass. I'm looking into sealing the doors but I need to find out some more first, these videos have given me ideas and inspiration cheers mate☺👍
Ah, no offence ;) I'm looking to install my build that I've been planning and preparing for, for over 8 years now, even before I had a car. Will be running Focal K2Powers and 165's in the rears - active, off of two Genesis Series 3 Four channel amps, bi-amped, which will be connected to an Audison Bit.1 to a Toslink to USB converter into a Microsoft Surface Pro which is outputting Bit-perfect digital audio. Should be good, the way I see it is better to do it right first time, not skimping on costs than to figure out in the future where I've cut corners I've ultimately robbed myself of my good quality sound.
These drivers are pretty sensitive and the stock amp is able to drive them reasonably well. If you plan on still being able to hear your music in later life there is not really the need for a bigger amp.
Where abouts in NZ are you bro? Great work though. I've got a Peugeot 3008 allure wanting to upgrade the factory ones to focal speakers, if you're in Auckland let me know probably will come to you for the job 👍👍
The rear-door tweeter location is brilliant. They are audible for the rearseat passengers, but the sound has a hard time getting to the front of the car. I've been in cars where the frontseat was so far back that the drivers more or less had the rear-tweeter right in the ear. Mounting it low in the doorcard prevents this
yes but still they could have put it low and NOT right behind a massive handle, high frequencies travel more line of sight than low frequencies and they don't pass through solid objects.
AFAIR when an adult is sitting in the rearseat they are within line of sight, although the spread is a bit obstructed by the handle :) but all in all, good clean work :)
Why? I can't even finish the video man! Measure mounting depth before cuting something. You ended up needing to make an spacer to fit the speaker anyway. Why didn't you made it from the begining and tested that? Use a bit of fiberglass to re do a piece like that, not sound insulating matt. You have a nice car and a nice set of speakers for it and you destroy the car parts dude. And honestly, I think it is better to tell a client to get a full system rather than using a factory designated crossover point for god knows what specs. Get a full range signal from the source unit, put it through the crossover and get all 3 speakers conected to that crossover. Purchase a new speaker baffle to replace the one you destroyed, make some spacers out of acrilic to mount the speaker, seal the remaining gap with epoxy glue, tap threads on the mounting holes. You are using a Focal Flax 3 way set of speakers and a Flax 2 way in the back, do your job the right way please man
38:47 the bass feels missing is because of the speaker pods. They r installed in factory location hut the bass is leaking from speaker's sides. So bads is not felt
dude where is your shop located ?! I need work on my vehicles sound system over here in Illinois lol.. but I cant find any shops that i actually trust. I'm scared of taking it in somewhere and getting a shitty job done followed by broken pieces.
That audi probably has most signal, and it is compatible with mobridge adapter...i dont need to write whats further can be done to have a better sound signal...
BallOuTT I left the amos and head and tossed the bose speakers in my porsche As a rule Bose speakers for car audio from factory are chinese paper driver junk I used focals found cheap New On ebay Good luck
@@sonvfaveahahaha yeah best for home threatre system guess ill check it out haven't seen anyone installed on model 3.2l A6 yet.Would like to see an upgrade.
hello, how did you connect the front speakers? how did you connect what to the crossover? do you connect the woofer wires to the crossover like the input and pot dispersion from the crossover? mhm
Hi dude. I'm just about to switch rear stock speakers on my Audi A6 2007 having the standard version of sound system (there are 3 of them, basic, standard and high with bose speakers) looks pretty much the same as in video. Would like to change the rear for Focal PS 165 V1 (www.focal.com/en/car-audio/car-audio-kits-solutions/performance/expert/component-kits/ps-165-v1) and most likely the front with the same as you did - PS 165F3. Can you share simple connection schematics for the rear and front just to get the best result please? From the video it's difficult to see the complete wiring, especially the crossover connection for the rear setup. Any recommendation for front and back would be more then welcome. Thanks!!!
Hello mate, can you please tell me if these speakers will fit on a same Audi A6 but Estate. And should I just fit the speakers or might do with an amp? Thx
Have you thought about what the crossover points are? say the stock Audi "sub" xover is like 200 and the xover on the focal crossover is set to 300 then really you are losing that whole frequency range. That would be my only concern
GunMetalSmalls yea but ok the flip side if I wired the front 6" to the passive crossover the input comming from the car may be high passed at the same point where the subs cut off so there would be no bass at all. It's a tricky one but with everything centered and the levels set it sounded decent as.
Car Audio.etc No I completely understand that's my only concern but hell as long as it sounds good then shouldn't be any issues. Keep up the awesome work man!! love the content!!
Great job next time add to these kind of video's an amp and a subwoofer installation Because i like to watch these kind of movies and i hope that you can also give a video like this for a ford focus wagon model 2017 greetz, ERonny
i would have suggested that you didnt cut the back part out. just heat it up and remold it. that way its more structurally stable and solid. with dynamat its too soft.
@@robbisson6506 not even any need for this, i just made a set of custom wooden rings to sit behind the driver, 8-10mm thick.. I didn't actually measire, just grabbed what i had to hand. Didnt modify the enclosure at all yet, tho i may experiment at some point with tuning them as the the original drivers are obviously tuned to these boxes which the AS3's wont be.
Hey nice work on your videos. Would like to know what would be an amp you would suggest for the f3 set. I just purchased 2 sets of them. Pondering 4ch amp or two separate amps one for front and one for back. Please and thanks.
+J Mc a 4ch amp will be just as good as two separate 2chs I reccome d any thing that does 90-120 Watts rms at 4 ohms per channel I have used lots of the Rockford micro power amps and they work every time.
anyone who knows how treble amplifier is in audi a6 c6 2005, should mount extra speakers in the back of the trunk (not sub) but treble. which cables go to the speakers to the doors behind? should connect additional amplifier and need signal to it
В России бы голову проломили за такую работу, сабвуфер-заплатка эта отлетит буквально через час, дверные карты-шумоизоляция и виброизоляция должны быть. Просто рукожопы.....
Do not see the results of whole that german effort in Audis or BMW, because factory system still sounds like shit. Mercedes and Vauxhall audio, sounds pretty fine. I have Prelude 4 gen and Legend KA9, and factory audio sistems sounds lot better, eaven if it's made simplier, widout eny sub boxes.
