Great Review Erin! I have these monitors in my music studio! I loved seeing this review! I ended up using Sonarworks (room correction) software in my music studio.... Definitely helps with that dip in the upper crossover point... It was great to see your measurements!!! Keep up the great work!

As a Twin6be owner since 2013, it hasn't worked in my space in the horizontal orientation due to my room dimension and available space. So mine have been in the vertical position from the start and tested (and sound) much better. Before that point, I HAD to effectively treat my room with bass traps and broadband absorbers to really get the best out of these monitors. They are very picky about the space they are in. I worked with GIK Acoustics to get the room sounding right and really dialed it in to get my room and monitors to work well together. I absolutely love them and they have been my workhorses in all of my work since I got them.

Used these in the Barrus studio at BYU Idaho. I remember them being picky with the soundstage, but for some vocals sounding perfectly real.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that the dispersion widening from 5-9kHz is very intentional, and intrinsic to how Focal differentiate themselves. All the Focal measurements I've seen show that. Likely why they go with that inverted tweeter. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but I do know people that love wide dispersion who love the Focal sound because of that. Ideally you wouldn't want that dispersion narrowing in the region right before, though, and I'm guessing that's the consequence of not going 3 way. Going 3 way though would have likely ruined that excellent distortion, performance. Cool to see those design tradeoffs reflected in the measurements.

It would be really interesting to see how the midrange without crossover behaves. It could have a big rise after the crossover frequency and there seemingly is a steep filter that cannot really handle that issue...?

It would be cool to hear your thoughts/testing on the open baffle Spatial Audio M3 sapphire speakers. They make some interesting claims about the low frequencies having a figure 8 spatial profile.

in short.. focal sounds how to say chemical in mids, and after some time i am not a fan of berylium tweeter, good spec on paper but quicky ear fatigue, with dd8c all sounds really natural and can work with them many hours

fantastic thorough review!! You nailed it! I used to own them but last year switched to a pair of Neumann KH310 which I find more accurate for mixing and mastering (and they go a bit lower which is a bonus!) . Would love your take on those ...if there's any chance. Thanks for you dedication.

Hello! I would like to ask you which monitor stand do you use? What if when I have to set the monitors if they are on the right or on the left, I have to do it according to my listening position?

I have the focals in a vertical position how should I have the woofer rear switch selected for left & right? Are these designed to be toed inwards?

I have these speakers. Love them. I have a issue which is the fuse keeps blowing. I have tried slow blow fuse as well. I live in india. I bought the speakers in Bulgaria. So the power plug is 2 pin. I am using a adapter to give it proper earthing.

Wow, the dip at x-over is 'strange'. But I maybe the freq resp of the midbass just doesn't allow for smooth transition - resonance around 1.8k and some peaking higher in frequencies indicating not the best behaviour of the cone. I have similar issues with SB17NRXC-4 that Erin tasted many years ago - the cone edge/surround interference around 1.4kHz making a proper transition to tweeter challenging. But with DSP Focal should be able to smooth things over. Also if they use LR4 type crossover there will a big dip in power response as well, as evident in off axis measurements and reflections pattern. As for the increase in dispersion, most Focal inverted domes are similar - reminds me of Daline TL from 90s, except it was crossed around 3k and tweeter level was some 3dB lower than midbass, again drop in output after cone edge/surround interference - easy going spkrs, not bad back then.

I gave a listen to the Kanta 2 and Paradigm 100F today which both sounded very accurate and detailed particularly with female vocals and that brings me to a question for you. Is there a way to quantify this accuracy, maybe you call it dynamics? Not sure of the exact lingo. Maybe using fast Gaussian pulses? Thanks!
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
Accuracy would be more in the frequency response. Dynamics could be attributed to sensitivity, compression and maybe even the FR balance. To be honest, when it comes to nailing down "dynamics" to one specific measurement, I'm not sure what that would be. I tend to think it's a combination.
@jasonk8311
@jasonk8311 3 года назад
@@ErinsAudioCorner If I'm not mistaken, accuracy would be proportional to how quickly the driver and change direction. Thus if you were to input a complex varying waveform to the speaker and either make accurate measurement of the actual driver position in space or perhaps just record the reproduction of the waveform by the speaker with a microphone in the time domain you could try to capture smearing, loss of amplitude, missed components ... in the reproduced signal compared to the reference. Perhaps with enough speakers one could relate the reproduced signal to terminology like sharp, distorted, crisp...?
@pulDag
@pulDag Месяц назад
@@jasonk8311 that's the part of distortion.

I wasn't expecting that. Response above 1.5khz has that dip followed by a big wide boost, and then another small dip, and then another small rise, then the roll-off. ???
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 3 года назад
Yea, there are definitely things about this speaker that I didn't expect either. It has really great response below 1kHz (to my ears, too) but above that it was meh.
