The Foka 4 was at the leading edge of standard class glider design when it flew on the 2nd May 1960.
Built from plywood moulded into concrete moulds, this glider was a portent of future glider construction and design. Nowadays gliders are built in a similar fashion but out of glass fibre, carbon fibre and kevlar.
This futuristic looking glider holds the distinction of being the only standard class glider to win an open class world gliding competition, winning the 1965 World Open Class Nationals at South Cerney in the hands of Jan Wróblewski.
This particular glider was donated to the Gliding Heritage Centre by Leslie Nicholson and Gwyneth Sutton and is seen making its first flight in 17 years after a two-year restoration by GHC volunteers lead by the pilot Gary Pullen.
