We made a workbench that folds against the wall when not in use, and detaches to roll wherever you need it when it is deployed. Now we have workbench space where when we need it and can wheel it to where we need it. And it's made from super cheap 2x4s too!
Start with a 24"x48" piece of plywood and then cut the following from 2x4 boards or scraps:
Bench
2 x 43.5"
2 x 17"
1 x 39.5"
2 x 44"
Legs
4 x 31"
4 x 7"
2 x 16.5"
2 x 9 3/4"

So, I was wondering... What is your idea of a "small shop"? Because MY shop is 10x16! Actually, 9' 8" x 15' 6". It's brand new and I haven't begun to outfit it yet. Per usual, I'll be equipping it from the workbench, out. I'm thinking something like a 3x6? Maybe 3.5 x 7? 4x8 seems "a tad" large for my little space. Also, I intend to make my workbench a FlipTop, so as to be able to mount several larger bench top power tools, reducing the overall footprint. I'd LOVE to have a retractable bench, but that would be difficult, or impossible in a steel shed. I thought about going deep in ground with a couple of 4x4's as a mounting surface. Any suggestions???

I finally completed my bench! A few mistakes and lack of skill returned in a unique bench. I knocked out the power only twice (trying to use my Shopsmith). I have an electrician scheduled to fix me up. Also tried to take off my finger, so as hunters smear blood on their faces, I "christened" my bench with my own blood. The docking station is scheduled for next Saturday. Sitting down to type this up is the first time I've sat down all day. I'm happy-exhausted.

That is exactly why we built this one. It folds down out of the way when you don't need it and can either me a conventional work table or a mobile one. I was just out in the shop a few minutes ago and folded it down so that I could install a French cleat wall above it. We LOVE the three different modes this workbench gives us!

The legs on my folding worktable which I use ALL the time failed. My shop is handicapped without it. I looked at several vids on folding workbenches and chose this design to model my new folding legs after. I had to make some mods to your design dimensions but I made it work for my tabletop. I am soooo pleased with the design and function of the folding legs. It is much heavier than with the spindly legs I had on it before; definitely more stable. I love it! Thanks for posting this. I highly recommend this to those considering sturdy folding legs.
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 3 года назад
Glad you liked it! It just made sense to us to fold the table down instead of up, because we want to use that upper wall for storage. And we had the same feeling about the legs. We wanted legs strong enough to handle us pounding on work with a sledge hammer. So far it's worked out pretty OK!

I've made this but instead of using a gate latch which rattles when working on the bench when it is 'docked' I used 4 adjustable level clasps (like what you would get on a suitcase) that you can adjust the tension on so I can really hold the bench tightly against the wall. I may add some rubber in there too as though I cut down the rattle, there is still some play so I could do with dampening it a bit more. I also cut handles into the top side of the bench (when it is folded and hanging against the wall) so i had the option of just undocking it from the wall and carrying it like a suitcase to where I needed it, great for taking it into the car or the house. Love this design, the best one I have seen online. Great work!

i like it! i have a similar bench and SWIIC complains about it being in the way, so i like the wall-mount idea! i think, tho, instead of that teeny latch, you could but a couple of magnets in the folding studs to hold that in orientation when the bench isn't there
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 3 года назад
We have exactly the same idea about the magnets. We have to remember the latch hook/unhook it, but magnets will simply work without us having to think about them. That is definitely a future upgrade.

@AtomicDairy

Many thanks! And we are thinking the same thing. Right now I just hold them up but a latch of some kind would made the whole thing easier to swing up and down. Maybe a removable pin through the front?
@dyvel
@dyvel Год назад
@@AtomicDairy yeah a Sprint would do it, and would definitely be in the same simplistic spirit as the rest of the bench. But I wouldn't make the Sprint removable. I would have a stop at either end so that you can pull it out maximally and it releases the legs, then you just push it in to get it out of the way. And if you have a stop on either end you can even have it spring loaded so that it automatically pulls back and locks the legs in place. :) And then perhaps something that makes one leg section Hold the other one in place when you fold them up in the right order. Otherwise the Sprint would have to be unnecessarily long.

Why thank you! We enjoyed driving around town filming that part, and got a lot of weird stares while we did it! And the hinges are because it flips up to be a regular work bench, which is how we most-often use it. We only wheel it around if we need to move the work to another station or outside, like to paint or sand something large. Otherwise it's a normal workbench that is attached to the wall for stability.

This is awesome! I watched several workbench videos and my thought is that most are too heavy, complicated, expensive and too big. These should be simple, fast, easy, light and cheap tools to make stuff; they are not supposed to be furniture to show off. Thanks.

Thanks for making this amazing video. Do you think a gate latch would work instead? Where the latch bolts are on two ends of the table and when you push the table up against the wall, it simply 'latches'. And since the latch bolts are round, the whole bench can turn about them and hang. I hope I was able to explain my idea properly.
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 3 года назад
It should, we looked at all kinds of latches for the task and settled on what we used. But that doesn't mean other latches wouldn't do the job just as well. We used what was readily available to us, but we always say there are 100 different ways to do something right, choose the one that works for you!

Thanks for the great video -- I've watched a couple dozen "foldaway workbench" vids now, and this is definitely the one from which I'm gonna steal the most ideas. 😅 Love the "This is a workbench, so we consider the top sacrificial" attitude, and especially the creative way to make room for legs that are longer than half the length of the bench. I did see you mention that it can get shaky on uneven flooring -- I'll be making at least one of mine even taller (back issues), so do you think that using two spreaders on the bottom, right up against the legs themselves, rather than just the one in the middle, would solve that? Thanks again.
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words! Two spreaders may indeed make it more stable with longer lets. And adding a second one should be pretty simple. Good luck with your build!!!

If you use Pocket Screws: @ 3:18 - Make sure they are LESS than 2 1/2" long - more like 2" or 1 5/8" max. I use 2 1/2" and when it came time to drill the holes for my caster rollers, the tips of the screws (~1/4") spanned right smack into the caster hole I was drilling. I had to remove the screws, clip them down (~1/4") finish drilling my caster holes then reinsert the screw to see if there was anymore interference between the screw and castor hole.

Minus the casters, hardware & screws the lumber needed is 48ft (6) 2x4x8 equaling $56 before tax @ my Home Depot. Not to bad.

Simultaneously entertaining and a great design - just what I’ve been looking for. Can you provide thoughts on the benchtop thickness? I have a piece of 12mm ply that would do the job but wonder if it might be a bit thin and I need to go to 19mm?
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 11 месяцев назад
It depends on what you will be using your workbench for, but I would go for the 19mm so that your bench will be more versatile. A thicker top will be stronger and will be able to handle greater loads and hammer blows. And very glad you liked the video!

Do you think doing the same design in a 4x8 work bench would make sense or create more of a challenge because of weight? I would prefer to use the lower part of the wall versus folding upwards and using the upper portion. Your design would be ideal but concerned on the weight of it hinging downward. Any thoughts and feedback is appreciated. Thanks for sharing!
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 3 года назад
We looked at a larger bench and realized 4x8 wouldn't work because the hinges will have to be a little over four feet off the floor. That would make the workbench top 48"+ high when it's folded up. We think 36" depth is about as deep as you could go but width can be anything you want. Plus if your width is wider than the folded legs you won't have to nest them like we had to. I think 3x6 would be a usable size and could work very nicely. At that size weight shouldn't be a problem either.
@andrewnguyen2605
@andrewnguyen2605 3 года назад
@@AtomicDairy Thanks for the response. I'll reconsider and likely take your advice of doing 3x6 instead.
