I would have put gear teeth into the two outer sections to keep the blade from touching the sides. The gear would make sure that both sides open and close at the same rate, and the fact they are meshed, would also keep the pivot points apart from each other to assist with deployment/retraction. A slightly longer handle would also allow the addition of a tang inside the hilt to help with stability. An additional set of gear sections at the tang would go a long way in helping with that.

to solve the possible issue of the exposed blade edge while it is closed, you could put a chisel grind on it. That way the edge rests directly on the frame while closed. There are other knives that have an exposed blade and use the chisel grind like that.

@J.DeLaPoer
@J.DeLaPoer 9 месяцев назад
@@SperberMeister IMO the materials and shape are perfect, but the handle just looks uncomfortably oversize. Maybe it's just me but the stag grips look about a quarter inch thick on each side, on top of an already very beefy steel frame. That said, video perspective and proportions can be deceiving and we won't really know until we get measurements and/or a side by side comparison with some other common knife to estimate the relative scale.

I dunno, I love the stag on there (and it's especially fitting as the classic material for those hunting knives/short swords since at least the late Medieval period). That said, is it just me or does the handle on this look oversized to the point of being awkward and uncomfortably wide? Maybe it's just the video perspective, but the scales look about 1/4" thick per side, on top of an already very beefy frame.

@TylerSnyder305
@TylerSnyder305 9 месяцев назад
That was my thought as well, but I believe being able to do that could make it way more expensive. Keep in mind that Deer stag is a very particular kind of thing. Inside the antler is a softer core called the pith, so you can think of the antler as hollow. For large stag handles like this it's harder to find pieces that can be thinned down. You want to do most of your thinning on the backside and a little bevel/ rounding on the edges at most, this means you need a piece with walls ( if you carved out all the pith ) that are thick enough so you can have good sized handle scales that aren't too thin. Basically if it's not a thick enough piece to really be shaped your only options are to leave it too fat or take material off both sides which can take all the bark / character off of it. This is the affordable way to have stag handles that are attractive looking, your options at an affordable price are looks or comfort sometimes.

@@J.DeLaPoer : I am from former Westgermany, and born 1965. In 1972 german law about weapons got a great restriction, but i was a child then, oh, i am Brittas boyfriend, only using her Computer, and didn' t noticed that. From time to time the restrictions became harder, but basicly from 1972 to 2008 knifes and carry them had been no problem. Automatic knifes with a blade longer than 8,5 cm ( about 3.4 ") and hidden Blades ( for example in hollow canes) had been forbidden, and at Events with many people, Sports Events or political Events, every , weapon ' was not allowed. You rarely saw men with a Bowie under a coat or long Jacket, and at ,hiking day' of my school, some Boys carried a fixed blade Fahrtenmesser. But in 2008 Butterfly Knifes, Push Daggers, automatic knifes where the Blade jumps in Line out of handle had been forbidden, for some time this Fallschirmjägermesser was allowed with a short Blade, but as far as i know, no more. Export Versions ? Possible, but i don' t know. But what i know: Since 2008, when law about knifes, carry of batons or blank pistols was restricted, violent crime didn' t became rarer, which is No surprise.

This was called a paratrooper's knife when I was a kid. I bought one when 440 stainless was rampant, but the quality of it was often so poor and impossible to sharpen I realized by my late teens, the manufacturers were simply lying! *Today, and just a couple years into legal adulthood, I was able to get a wicked edge on 440 S.S. I bought one of these knives believing I could somehow convert it to an automatic lol.* Currently in the state of Ohio, *all switchblades, daggers, swords and many other devices are 100% legal and you can carry them concealed.* HB 140, and HB 153 with the latter preventing cities, towns and villages from passing ordinances to regulate knives and other devices in any way whatsoever. *No surprise, we have seen zero rise in knife crime.*
@OnkelHucke
@OnkelHucke 9 месяцев назад
Looks quite impractical for a paratrooper. My father had been issued a gravity knife (Fallmesser) during his time as a german ranger in the fifties. With that kind of blade you can release the blade inside the hilt and it drops (hence gravity) or you can make a slashing move to generate your own force to open it. Obviously that kind of knife is illegal in germany nowadays.

I have a minor criticism. Keep in mind that I'm not knowledgeable in the anatomy of a knife. The grip could use a slight bevel. The outline has been improved over the original due to the curve. Adding a bevel to the non-metal part of the grip would make it a bit more comfortable, in my opinion. It wouldn't have to be a very wide bevel. 15 degrees and about an eighth inch (not good with metrics) from outside to the center, maybe. I would probably start at the fattest part, in the middle, and taper it off toward the ends.
@J.DeLaPoer
@J.DeLaPoer 9 месяцев назад
I said this elsewhere here too, but IMO the handle just looks much too wide & thick relative to the blade -- even too thick to be comfortable for most people. Maybe it's just me but the stag grips look about a quarter inch thick per side, on top of an already very beefy steel frame. I like the materials, just needs to thin down a bit. That said, video perspective and proportion can be deceiving and we won't really know until we get measurements and/or a side by side comparison with some other common knives to estimate the relative scale.

Even in this size I'd want a different look for my tastes, a little sleeker. But the mechanism overall, quite well done. Scaling it down from a hunting knife size to a pocket knife size would make it a sleek and classy looking folder. Much better than other pantographic knives I've seen demonstrated, which are all... more like the first sample, a bit wonky.

that is clever. a simple fix for an annoying issue. for the little bits of critism you gotten like the dullin gof the blade, you can easily fix that by adding a V shaped catch at the end that sharpens the blade as you unfold/fold the blade, wouldn't be to hard to do just slightly change the railat one end. my only critism is i think a spring loaded locking mechanism would be better than this latch one you have here.
