So, Seatylock have announced their newest and most secure addition to their lock arsenal - the Foldylock Forever. I was given pre-release hands-on experience with this lock, and in this review, I compare its features to the ABUS Bordo Granit X Plus 6500.

It also doesn't help that you start with "the foldylock makes it the more secure choice". Setting an angle for the video, from the start to focus on benefits of the foldylock. Also comparing tests of the Abus by unaffiliated youtubers with in-house testing of seatylock. You should be able to imagine that if it would break, they would not make that video public. Instead, they may create a new vid. The tools and forced used can not be compared as such. To base your conclusion regarding regidity on in-house testing says a lot, even if you did not want it to. Instead it would have made more sense to talk about your personal experiences, and leave the security aspect out of it for lack of unbiased and comparible data. All the best!

Since producing this review I've begun testing the durability and security of locks myself, as I agree it's not good to rely on the manufacturer's in-house testing. In the Seatylock lock attack video, it just cuts to show a broken nut splitter, but it doesn't show the moment the splitter supposedly falied. I think you'll find that this is marketing over honesty.

I've seen the full video myself, and the splitter did fail. I'm currently setting up a workshop which will allow me to thoroughly test and attempt to destroy each lock in-house to expose any weaknesses.

Glad you mentioned angle grinder attacks. I had to cut my foldylock (classic) recently due to a rusted locking cylinder and was surprised how easy it was for a small portable angle grinder to cut through the one of the arms. Not sure if either the Foldylock Forever or Abus Bordo would fair any better but it is a reminder not to leave you bike locked somewhere no one can keep an eye on. It only takes about a minute for an angle grinder to saw through the hardened steel, maybe a little longer for a thicker plate.

The Forever uses 6.5mm plates, which means an extra 1.5mm of hardened steel, however the difference this will make when facing an angle grinder will be small. There isn't a folding lock out there that can defeat an angle grinder. @@bikelockwiki Thanks James. I checked out your website and see that you've listed the Foldylock Compact as the best folding bike lock. I own the Foldylock Clipster myself as well; which has the same security scale, circumference & weight as the Foldylock Compact. After seeing how an angle grinder makes short work of hardened steel, I don't plan to upgrade to a Foldylock Forever. I don't think the extra weight and price will make much difference to a bike thief armed with an angle grinder. I should correct my earlier comment that I had to cut my Seatylock Classic (not Foldylock Classic), which is essentially a 100cm Foldylock with a seat attached. I think Seatylock is one of the smartest bike locks designs out there. It stows the lock under your seat and ensures you always have a lock on you. It also does double duty in securing your bike and your bike seat. I like to think that the illusion of a 'missing' bike seat on my locked bike will also deter some bike thieves. Cheers.

Bummer having to cut that lock. A quick note- to ensure operation in the harshest conditions, ABUS tests their locks in a salt bath for weeks at a time. Defintley the route to go if you're lock is out in the elements all year long.

I was searching for a good lock for my new E-Bike. After some research i decided to buy the ABUS, well this was before i saw this video...Next time(which i hope wont happen) im going for the Forever one. Thx for the nice vid.

It's a struggle for sure, the Forever is still yet to be released though (should launch on Kickstarter on May 10th at 10am EST), so you still have a chance. The innovation that smaller security companies bring is much needed, sadly they don't always have the budget to keep their products constantly in stock.

Well-done. I dropped a like, but I don't plan on watching non-stop bike lock videos, so no sub. I think Abus has heard you, as the going rate for the Abus is now half the price of the FoldyLock. The head area of the Abus is sure a lot more clunky; I think there was a reason for that you didn't touch on.

Feels very biased. Many informations are from the manufacturer himself and obviously generally prefering the Foldylock - without any evidence to support any claim. I have no preference for either, but I don't like biased videos anyways. ...and I'm wondering if the people commenting below, that are supposedly changing their buying decision based on this video, are any more substantiated or unbiased than this video.

Thanks for your feedback, at the time of producing this video I was unable to complete destruction testing in-house, but have begun in-house destruction testing in my new videos, which helps to clearly display the strengths and weaknesses of the products I test. When it comes to being biased, It may sound like it. However, I have access to the top folding locks on the market and I choose to use the Foldylock Forever and Seatylock Mason 140 to secure my bike each time I go for a ride. I Appreciate your feedback and will use it to increase the quality of the content I'm producing moving forwards.

It says it's called forever 90 and a please note message ...this is UK version of American one. On eBay.. has same weight too.

I’m fairly sure this is the Foldylock Classic, which has been rebranded after it was upgraded to achieve Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Gold. If this is the case the plates are only 5.5mm thick, 1mm thinner than the forever. Just verifying this for you.

Very biased. How does "putting more metal between the thief and your bike make it more secure" , if the locks poor then it doesn't matter how thick the metal is. The Abus storage pouch looks much better, a strap that simply clicks into place that doesn't allow the lock to bounce out. Noisier? They are both made from the same materials. Sponsored and very biased. Abus for me. The online test on the Abus was very open and honest, you could actually see it being done, it damaged the nut splitter and it wasn't "easy". All we saw of the Foldylock was still pictures, very misleading.

If a lock is good, then more metal is always more secure. Otherwise, why would Kryptonite make beefier and heavier chains and locks like the Fuhgeddaboutit? The Foldylock can't bounce out. It's not held in by gravity. Notice the curved lip that hooks over the ends of the inner links. Personally, I would prefer that to a rubber strap that will harden and get brittle with age and UV exposure. What still pictures are you talking about? I saw short video clips, but no stills. Sounds like you have an axe to grind. Very biased indeed.

@@kippywylie I spoke with Michael from Seatylock again who advised that this should be available from the 18th of April. I’d recommend using another lock alongside this for your e-bike, a chunky d-lock will do well. Maybe the Hiplok D1000.

The locking nut slides into the outside of the locking mechanism, its the same across all of the foldylock models :)

Thanks for your feedback! Apart from the Bordo 6500 and the Trelock FS 500 there isn't another folding lock that comes close to the security the Forever offers. I chose the second most secure folding lock, to attempt to offer the most valuable comparison for the viewer.

So Seatylock says their tests show their lock is secure. Doesn't ABUS say the same? I'd either do my own test of both locks, or rely on an independent tester of both locks, before making a video which "establishes" that one product is more secure than another similar one. 1 mm difference in plate thickness doesn't say much per se, it's the number of seconds with an angle grinder that counts. Both locks are due to their shared design type equally resistant to bolt cutters (provided that the steel quality is similar, which we don't know). An objective comparison using nut-splitters would be interesting, even though that's a rare tool in even the professional bike thief's arsenal. It took LPL a whole 2 minutes to break a Bordo 6500 with a nut-splitter, and that was with the lock in a vise, and not counting the time required to cut away the tough plastic in order to get access for the tool.

I agree, more testing is definitely required here. At the time of shooting this video, I had limited access to tools and a suitable space for destructive testing. However, as you'll see from my recent videos, I've invested in both of the above to increase video quality and provide more information for anyone watching. I've had several others ask for a more detailed destructive test of the 6500 & Forever, and I'll be working on it shortly. Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, it's very helpful! James

I'm disappointed that you chose to trust Foldylock's in-house security testing. You should always take in-house testing with a grain of salt until reputable third-parties have reproduced the results.

@@cumpootuhruser9355 I agree and understood at the time of filming this that relying on manufacturer testing isn't ideal. However, at the time of filming this video I simply didn't have the resource to carry out destruction testing myself, whereas I've now invested in the require tools and space for this to be possible. My most recent videos include much more thorough destruction testing and I'll continue to invest in this to increase quality and reliability moving forwards. I'll be putting the Foldylock Forever through destruction testing the soon. Stay tuned.

99% of bike locks are easily pickable, so CRAP! Don't waste $200 on a lock! There are plenty of $50-100 ones that are bolt-cutter safe, and it's more likely that a thief carries a lock-picking tool than a grinder, because it doesn't attract any attention, and it's pocketable. It's only a matter of time before thieves discover lock-picking tools and realise it doesn't attract attention, compared to a bolt-cutter or grinder... With a $30 tool, you can pick a lock in 20 seconds, and no bystander would look at you unsuspecting... from a distance it looks the same as if you were to unlock it with a key, or combo.

This sounds like it could be true, but hardly any thieves use lockpicks on the street. It's easy to watch lockpicking videos and say, "These locks are easily pickable", but you've probably been watching professionals or people with many, many hours of picking experience and practice, a sacrifice bike thieves aren't typically willing to make. Power tools are quicker and require only two brain cells to operate.

That's definetely one approach! I've also seen a video of people tying their bike to an immovable object, I wouldn't recommend this, but it seemed somewhat effective.

First I’ve heard of this, where did you find this out? I’ll be using a cordless drill in my testing moving forwards, so we’ll have a better idea of cylinder security.

@@bikelockwiki It was just a guess because of the looks from the keyhole. But maybe they added protection. Worth finding out. Other looks get tested on this as well, because it happened. Because if not this would be a solid lock as it seems, at least for a folding lock. I am also highly engaged when the topic is bicycle security, for notice.
