Follow God or Oppose God, We All Wrestle 

That episode in the Bible always stuck with me. Jacob is trembling at the idea of meeting his brother knowing he and his family might perish, and he prays alone at night, hoping God will comfort and strengthen him. What he gets is a mysterious night long fight from which he emerges limping. The Angel initiates the fight and none of them wins for a long time. The conclusion is the strike to Jacob's side. Jacob doesn't want to let him go, he wants to know his name, and the Angel responds: why do you ask my name? (As in: don't you know me? In the Bible God sends his Angels to speak for Him as Himself) And then Jacob gets a new name. "Because you have wrestled with God, and you won." Jacob will be a patriarch whose memory is immortal. His 12 kids will start families that will become huge tribes and the whole people of Israel. His son Joseph will be king of Egypt and save his family and the country from famine. And Jacob was just a good, simple guy with a young family trying to get by at that point. Running from his own brother after living in exile, working for his relative, for years. He fears his brother will skin him and God... just sends him one more fight. And the next day his brother is happy to see him and all is well. Sometimes I feel God is like a good dad that if I fall, will pat me and comfort me but won't share my panic and pessimism. On the contrary he'll challenge me to stand up again. "You can do this. Come on." I see that in Jesus's Passion. Jacob praying for his life, alone at night, always reminded me of Jesus praying in the garden before they came to arrest Him. Just the thought of what was about to happen was unspeakable fear for both. They are both challenged to keep on fighting. Jesus also emerges from his prayer place somewhat limping, like someone who has been bleeding, but He will walk straight towards the people who are coming for Him along with the "brother", one of his best friends, Judas, who will put Him to death. Jesus will die, but just three days later His victory shows. With Him, life goes on, life goes up, life comes back, life restarts and renews. Life has a new face and a new name. All this I felt it come true in me, in my deepest hellish experiences, and He knows I owe him my will to live and my hope and sanity, praise be to Him forever. Thank you Dr. Peterson for what you do.

I was reading this passage yesterday, almost at the same time this was posted. Jacob did not "win", as in overpowering the Angel, but he passed the test. When the Angel touches his hip, it's a clear sign he could have destroyed Jacob from the very beginning, but that was not the intention of the fight. It was to test Jacob's heart, and I think that's something we have to take as a lesson. Not letting go of God, whether the relationship we have with him is smooth or conflictive, we cannot let go of his blessing and, more importantly, His presence in our lives.

I wouldn’t say he was victorious, he simply didn’t lose. I think the very fact that God could simply touch him and defeat him (and he did that’s how the hip injury came about) shows just how amazing it is that God was willing to fight Jacob on Jacob’s terms rather than destroying him outright. P.S. In English bibles in the old testament there are specific references to a specific angel whose name is always written with a capital letter A if it says “Angel”. Scholars believe this to be Jesus, and that’s why the Angel could tell Jacob he fought with God. Not ambiguious at all really. Jacob fought Jesus.

Wrestling - not rebellion nor rejection. You might call it negotiating, as Moses did regarding the people of Israel, and Abraham, regarding the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Contending, but never contemptuous. Wrestling is a rich word, full of meaning.

I really, really like this idea. That the chosen people are not defined by place, or ethnicity, or *mindless belief,* but by struggling with moral concepts. It's like you said about, if malevolence is evil, then the opposite is play. Wrestling is the play version of fighting. It's pretty close to outright war, but the point of wrestling is to have a fight and neither side actually dies. It's to match skill and strength in a way that makes both sides better. So this means, Jordan, that God wants a partner. It means *He learns and gets better by struggling with US.*

You say its not those who believe but those who wrestle that are chosen. Good point. But consider the reason for the wrestling. The wrestling was not AGAINST God, but rather FOR a blessing FROM God. This key point makes a significant difference, BECAUSE one cannot wrestle with God FOR a blessing FROM Him if one does not first BELIEVE in Him.

Well Jacob did have faith (trusting belief) in God's existence , he just didn't trust his blessing as Jacob. That's why God permanently dislocated his hip, so he couldn't trust in his own strength. Even so he wouldn't let God go until God gave him what he asked him for, a blessing from the ultimate Father from heaven! You don't ask for a blessing from someone you don't believe in, or else how will they be able to give it to you? Only those that believe in God will wrestle with him and ask him for blessings. God changed his name as a sign that he was a changed man, he would now lean on God to bless him. Sinners mock God and refuse to acknowledge his very existence. No wrestling there, just contempt and rage against God that will result in their total destruction under his fiery wrath.😢 As for true New Testament believers in Christ, we not only wrestle with God at times, but we also wrestle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. I have often wrestled with my faith and come to the conclusion that believing in the existence of God and having faith in God are two different things.

Whether you have faith in him or not - wrestle with him.

In order to “wrestle” one must be in very close proximity to the one in which you are wrestling with. It’s about motive, and it’s always about motive. Jacob’s motive was to establish his identity in the Lord. Who he was, wrestled with who he longed to be. A son of God. In most cases, the atheistic motive is not to wrestle with God but rather to be liberated from the entanglements that are required to do so.

Actually beating God (or an angel) in a wrestling match isn't that hard to believe. IF you interpret as follows. Jacob represents the flesh. He's human . . . made of atoms, molecules, cells, organs. Jacob's story is ambiguous, as is MOST of the bible. That's one fascinating aspect of the bible... most of it is AMBIGUOUS ! Ambiguity leaves a thought open to a wide spectrum of "truths". Such that it degenerates into very little "truth". The whole premise of bible is anyone can make anything they want out of it. It's a smorgasbord of "cherry-picking" and can be used to generate a whole spectrum of nonsense. The reason people wrestle with "god" is not because any evidence has been produced [other than ideas and ancient testimony] and instead from early childhood the wealth of grey matter people are born with is primed from an early age to believe all those theistic ruminations has some "truth" to it, when it Doesn't. The only thing in the bible that has any credibility are the geographic references and cultural engagements [like wars] and some historical personalities. Personal testimonies are no more reliable than personal testimonies today... people make things up, people lie for various motives, etc. Do you believe everything you see and hear today? If you do you shouldn't... not without substantial evidence. JP's references to "atheists" struggling is not necessarily accurate. It is not for example necessary to believe in the bible to be a MORAL human being. As far as a "higher purpose" what he often chooses to overlook is the "higher power" is SOCIETY, it's expectations, it's laws, social standards, etc. All things that can be proven to exists. That is the higher "existence" that can be honestly professed. To be a "good" citizen and a good human being and anyone can do that on their own. Anyone who can't simply aren't good people, are unwilling to conform to societal expectations and rules. And one reason they can't or won't is because they've been taught there is a "higher" power than the society they live in. And that they need to conform to the standard set by some disembodied consciousness lurking somewhere outside the known universe. The only people who really benefit from that are the clergy and the evangelical "street preachers" who collect your time and money and "psychologist", pseudo-scientists, etc. that have abandoned Science.

I think this is not accurate. Jacob, as a jew, believed in God. The Jews were the only monotheist people in those times. He believed in the God of Abraham. So to say that God is moved bye struggle rather than faith is incorrect. The bible make it clear that God corrects those who follow him. The meaning of Jacob's struggle is more about the full submission to God's plans. I believe God put individuals, which are part of his holy plan, to hard tests. To believe that we are ALL emotionally damaged … suggests that we are all one and the same. I have immense respect for Dr Peterson. And he always dresses great. But he also continually makes a fundamental error: he has never actually defined god. Without a proper definition of god, the entire enterprise of searching for, or struggling with, or appealing to, is entirely without foundation. Without this definition, people are likely to create gods which fit with their own tendencies and social constructs, which is probably why the human race has created tens of thousands of them.

I haven't yet seen other commentators with very different viewpoints, such as Richard Dawkins, speak in such a way or offer such interpretations of the human condition. Too many people focus on the "magic man in the sky" aspect of it and forget that the Bible is just a collection of stories, and the stories were the only way our ancestors could communicate knowledge to newer generations. They are stories to describe purpose and the human spirit. If you wave them off like it is just some joke then you are basically admitting that stories don't have any moral to them, and there is nothing to learn from them. I've wondered how you handle the part of Abraham's story where his faith is scored as righteousness and resulting justification.

I had the same thought. That the Israelite people, even though they saw all these incredible miracles still created a calf out of gold. And worshipped it despite knowing how real God was. The plagues of Egypt. Entire mountains on fire. Walls of fire barring the enemy from attacking you. The red sea parting so that you can pass. How was that not the definition of a stiff neck people?

I mostly agree. What could it mean to wrestle with God? If God is the natural order and potential of the universe, then to wrestle with God means to establish new truth that was always true, but was unknown as an aspect of reality until that point. Simply holding up the established (blind following of religion) denies oneself of the opportunity to wrestle God just as one who asserts falsehoods as truth; to wrestle God would mean to overcome the limitations of what is known by adding to the pool of what is known (the kingdom of man under God).

The Bible isn’t what he’s making it out to be, he’s overthinking it. He can’t stand up there and talk about something after first having brought himself into it. If the book was titled Stories Through the Ages it would be a book about stories, which is what the Bible is. But you call it Bible and you think it’s a religion. Yet, what’s the practice? There’s no practice. There’s before Jesus and after Jesus about peoples travels, so what. There’s lines of speech in which he glorifies himself, so what. There’s so-called miracles like walking on water that are only figures of speech, so what. These are stories taken out of context by a cult, nothing more. Cults prey on children, men don’t.

This is interesting, but why does it have to be the Judeo-Christian one? There’s been thousands of gods, and all have just as many proof for their existence (none). Peterson engages with this one due to his geographical and cultural upbringing. Plain and simple. I believe it’s ridiculous to premise a book, ‘We Who Wrestle With God’, before such a broad, disagreed-upon and far from well-grounded term is even defined.

This is my contention with God in and of itself. If God is good; why are the only two options Submission or Rejection? What kind of 'Good' God creates a system of oppression designed to either, a) Cast you into Oblivion or b) a life of Burdened Servitude. This tells me whoever this 'God' is, he is or was a Tyrant, and I will not willingly serve a Dragon.

A silly narrative. I'm a smart guy. Grew up in a religious family. Read the bible, the Quran and the Torah out of curiosity. I quickly realized that I have no relationship with religion. I spend zero time with it at all. Likely there is no God, and if there is I don't really care much, and neither do I think any possible God cares about me. There is no wrestle with religion, and I do not wrestle with morality or values either. You are either a net good for yourself and your community, or a net bad. Chose one.
