Following in the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark! (SUV Camping/Vanlife Adventures)

As a mom of two teen boys, it makes me ridiculously happy to see a pair of brothers hanging out and enjoying each other's company.

We moved to Oregon in ‘95 when our daughter was only a few months old, she was a book hound when very young and would constantly bring us her books to read aloud. Having visited Fort Clatsop one weekend with the family I bought the Stephen Ambrose book “Undaunted Courage “ for my own education and enjoyment. One night I decided to read aloud to her from my book rather than her children’s book, she loved it and begged me nightly to read more as she fell asleep in my lap. Such fond memories, thanks for the reminder.

The construction of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, (nicknamed “Terrible Tilly”) took over 500 days. On January 21, 1881 Tilly’s first order Fresnel lens was lit for the first time. On September 1, 1957, Keeper Oswald Allik turned off the light for good and made one final entry in the logbook (now on display at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria): “Farewell, Tillamook Rock Light Station. An era has ended. With this final entry, and not without sentiment, I return thee to the elements. You, one of the most notorious and yet fascinating of the sea-swept sentinels in the world; long the friend of the tempest-tossed mariner. Through howling gale, thick fog and driving rain your beacon has been a star of hope and your foghorn a voice of encouragement. May the elements of nature be kind to you. For 77 years you have beamed your light across desolate acres of ocean. Keepers have come and gone; men lived and died; but you were faithful to the end. May your sunset years be good years. Your purpose is now only a symbol, but the lives you have saved and the service you have rendered are worthy of the highest respect. A protector of life and property to all, may old-timers, newcomers and travelers along the way pause from the shore in memory of your humanitarian role.”

Loved the whole series from start @ Lady Bird in Redwood forest, to sight where Japanese fighter pilot dropped a bomb to try & set forest on fire, to the awesome beaches on the ocean, ice cream @ TILLAMOOK & finishing up with Trevor @ the fort & Seaside with Lewis & Clark stuff. You ALWAYS do your homework & know your stuff. Not only do we get to see BEAUTIFUL country, you also give us a great gift educating us on all the spots you visit. I got pneumonia that kept me down for 3mo & lost my almost 95 yr old grandma right before christmas. I came across your channel by accident & want to say THANK YOU for getting me through being sick, losing my grandma & inspiring me to want to start traveling more! I remember reading in Undaunted Courage they said that was the coldest 4 months of their lives. Love walking on cannon beach. 😀

Tillamook Head Lighthouse is known as “Terrible Tilley” and in winter storms the waves sometimes crash down on the structure from many feet in the air The lighthouse keeper would sometimes be stranded there for weeks at a time because the seas would be so rough that a boat was unable to approach the rock. Super video! Really nice to meet your brother.

ANother location to add to my bucket list. I've been fascinated by the Lewis and Clark expedition since i was young. A part of me kind of wishes i lived in that era to have participated, although i know it was a rough life.

This was a very interesting tour. I enjoyed seeing you and your brother enjoying the adventure together.

It would be an adventure to follow the Oregon trail to its terminus. A big trip no doubt but you would see some beautiful country. You can find William Clark’s inscription east of Billings at Pompey’s pillar. He inscribed his name in a prominent point named after one of his slaves (Pompey). There are at least two more points where migrants carved their names, independence rock (west of Casper) and register cliffs (guernsey, Wyoming). Wagon wheel ruts are still visible. Incredible!! Highway 12 through Idaho is beautiful!!

Sand towers, hands down favorite part. I enjoy the minutia as much as, and sometimes more than, the macro. Great series Tristan!

Great series, as usual. You are one of my favorite you tube creators! Old vehicles are fine, as long as you keep up on maintenance. I have a 1980 Toyota pickup, and a 1985 Toyota 4Runner that are my camping/exploration vehicles.

Unlike most people I enjoy stormy gloomy skies and seas and hikes in the rain. That’s what you get when you visit the NW before the faucets in the sky are shut off in June and back on again in October 🤣😂

One thing I got from Undaunted Courage was that those guys weren't afraid of anything as long as they had a charged 50 caliber long rifle. In order to join the group each man had to be a crack shot.

I enjoyed the whole Oregon Coast series, kind of made want to travel across the country again from Michigan. I spent a week with my youngest daughter traveling along the coast while her older sister was attending, "Not Back to School" camp. Unable to pick a fav. But the fact that you noticed the little "sand" islands is impressive. I spent July 4, 2004 in Atchison KS, 200 years after L & C celebrated at that location. Authentic reenactment was unforgettable. Oh, and your older bro is as handsome as you!

Well, it's actually VACOUVER ISLAND. The city of Victoria is on the southern end of Vancouver Island and is the capitol of British Columbia, Canada. It is a beautiful island. You should visit. We love it here. Lots of stuff to do and see and forest roads to camp on.

In general on your channel, I love all the places you show me where I've never been and may never go, but on this trip it was also really enjoyable to see so many places I have been through your lens and your interpretation. I was born and raised in Seaside. It was a great place to be a kid.

It is nice to see two adult siblings enjoying time together. I love a nice quiet campsite and just how quiet it is after a snowfall.

Can you imagine how difficult it must have been to build that lighthouse out on that rock with the ocean waves forever pounding. 🌊

Great tour ! Love the history stories of Lewis and Clark you shared ! Amazing only one person died on the trip... Interesting to how much salt people ate back then (with no harm as its demonized now ) and how it was needed, especially the potassium for hiking and working hard in the wilderness .

Loved seeing where Lewis and Clark had spent the winter. They didn't have Suburbans. Love the history stuff. Love everything green and wet.

Well presented. As it happens, I hit all those same highlights on a trip through the area in 2019. I saw it during the summer, but your trip better captured the conditions that L&C endured. I recall reading that L&C recorded only 13 days without rain during the months they spent there. I think the salt crew may have had the better living conditions of the two locations. I would like to know more about the concrete ruins near the lighthouse viewpoint, but just following an actual trail they used was cool enough. Puffins...Haystack Rock is all about the Puffins! Thanks for sharing a fun trip.

I love Lewis & Clark history. Have you ever been to Camp Dubois in Illinois? Neat place. Fun fact. Researchers found out some of their camp sites by finding deposits of Mercury since they would ingest Mercury to puke/poop out sicknesses. On a side note. You need to wash your Montbell. I just washed my Montbell Superior Parka and it's amazing how much loft it regained.

Great series! Having had two 'burbs from that era, the issues you cite are pretty much the norm. The lock issue is mostly corrosion and really random/common. It is possible to replace them yourself, just a pain in the backside. The steering issue is also 100% common. Older K1500s (and probably 2500s too) have worm gear steering, which gets sloppy with age. It can be adjusted on at least some models, which will provide some improvement. Also, tie rod ends and ball joints wear out on these rigs and do need to be replaced. I put 325K on a 94, and 260 on a 99. I wish they hadn't gotten rid of the barn doors:(

I'm surprised that much of the ship is left. I lived on the Outer Banks of NC which is the graveyard of the Atlantic. Hundreds of ship wrecks. Also the home of Blackbeard.

I just watched this video and I noticed while you were on the observation deck the pacific was displaying square waves!

I love all your videos. Just watch the 80s version pop up van that was cool. I really had to giggle when you were walking around on the beach refer to the jellyfish as big blobs. Those big blobs when live can really put some painful Sting's across your entire body especially one that size right!

This is great! I lived in Portland a while back,, did some camping up and down the coast. I remember that shipwreck. So much to explore in that area, this is a fantastic episode.
