If you're reading this, do yourself a favour: stay the f*ck out of this comment section, it's a real mess. I dunno what some of these people were hearing, but I'm enjoying the absolute f*ck out of this fantastic piece of work. Oh boo hoo, there's a Holy Diver rif - if you knew the backstory of this album and knew that these guys aren't ones to intentionally rip off other artists, then maybe you'd understand why it's there! Also, the lyrics are inspired/taken from interviews Dave did for the tv show, so you cannot deny that this is a piece of art - with another 7 pieces to come! :)
***** Yeah, thanks for that. Although I wasn't aiming for a twatty approach... more of an honest and logical way of looking at the piece. Oh, and if my comment was truly twatty and offensive to you in some way, just remember that 33+ people think otherwise. :)
yeah it seems like people have just listened to the intro and don't like slow paced rock. this song is exactly what the name suggest it turns from nothing to something. not that the intro wasn't good it was just something a lot of people would hear and say boring and then it just picked up and got better and better.
Don't know why people are complaining again as usual, everything Foo is great! Be grateful the Foo Fighters keep true to the genre unlike most bands today.
No matter what the band is, people complain. Weezer's new album sucks. Foo Fighters' new song sucks. The Black Keys' new album sucks. Arctic Monkeys' new album sucks...according to everyone. Which is ridiculous. This song is awesome.
For those who feel the need to point out the obvious similarities to the verse riff of Dio's 'Holy Diver' - listen up: Once upon a time, when 'Holy Diver' was a brand new song (and I was in high school, headbanging to all that awesome shit) there were the detractors who claimed Vivian Campbell had merely ripped off Sabbath's 'Snowblind' and sped it up. Perhaps, but apparently - over 30yrs later - no one seems to care, or even make the connection. Grohl is a huge metalhead (check out Probot) and would be the first to admit the comparison. He was also a friend of Dio's, and it's likely an homage of sorts. Now listen and enjoy.
siriusisastar It’s just not enjoyable tho. It’s annoying because the riff never comes to its obvious conclusion. It just repeats the first half twice. It’s boring. Being inspired by something to create something else makes sense. It’s natural. This having no conclusion is lazy and unnatural
1:51 "But in the end we all come from what's come before"(riff from Holy Diver plays). Everyone whining about Dave "ripping off" Dio clearly missed out on the fact that Dave is obviously paying homage to a legend and a late friend. Or did you guys seriously think Dave the motherfucking man Grohl thought people wouldn't notice the similarity?
Couldn't find decent lyrics for this track when it first came out so I wrote them here. This has since been amended and corrected after the Foo's posted a music video where the words flash on the screen, (like a drunken karaoke), so what you see below is now correct. Thanks for all the supportive and helpful comments. DIGAFATH? Nope ;) Give me a flammable life I'm cold as a match Ready to strike So here I go Here lies a city on fire Singing along The arsonist choir Now here I go It started with a spark And burned into the dark Now here I go There is a river I found Into the wild. Under the ground So here I go The button on a string And I heard everything Now here I go Well Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way But in the end we all Come from what's come before So here I go Well Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way I threw it all away because I had to be what never was Been so hungry I could lie You took my world, I took your wine And held you in my bloody hands These rattled bones and rubber bands Washed them in the muddy water Looking for a dime and found a quarter But you can't make me change my name You'll never make me change my name Pay me no mind, now ain't that something Fuck it all I came from nothing I'm something from nothing You are my fuse I'm something from nothing You are my fuse It goes Oh oh oh Oh oh oh Oh oh oh It goes Oh oh oh AAALLLL RIIGGGHHHTTT ! No you can't make me change my name You'll never make me change my name Pay me no mind, now ain't that something Fuck it all I came from nothing I'm something from nothing I'm something from nothing
I also think it's "I'm something, from nothing" And "It goes Oh Oh Oh" :) But other than that it looks right, and thank you! You should make a lyric video version :)
I love Foo Fighters, I have every single one of their albums and plan to buy this one as well. I don't care what everyone else in the world says, these guys are keeping rock alive. There will always be people that will gripe and complain about missing the "old" *insert band name here* or say "their last album was better" blah blah blah. It's all passion and preference anyways, your opinion's your opinion and I can respect that. But my opinion is that Foo Fighters is one of the last bands (at least in public eye) that are still rocking out and keeping rock alive. Well, them and Tenacious D, but I digress. So keep rocking Dave, Taylor, Mendel, Smear and Shiflett!
people are never satisfied, every new album of all bands in the world are the same comments .. "expected more", "most liked songs of the 90s" ... that shit guys. Ih the band always makes the same style, people complain, when evolves, complain asking for the same style as the other albuns. This new song is really good and shows how the FF maintains the quality year after year
Right! You just can't please some people. What do they want? It seems like the best way to not gain a bunch of haters is to break up after like 3 albums, because after that, fans either leave because you changed your style, or because you "sold out", or you deliver the same style album after album. I don't get it!
This is a well crafted rock song...what the fuck to you want them to do? Turn into RUSH? They probably can but they are FOO FIGHTERS, this is their sound!!. Most new bands are boring as shit, at least Foo's still have the old Rock n Roll spirit
Well it sounds like they threw a lot of the punk rock inspiration in there while maintaining the Foo sound. It's fucking incredible, but not a lot of people are fond of the punk rock sound I suppose. I love it!
Here are the official lyrics, shown in EP1 of Sonic Highways :D Give me the flammable life I'm cold as a match Ready to strike So here I go Here lies a city on fire Singing along The arsonist choir Now here I go It started with a spark And burned into the dark Now here I go There is a river I've found Into the wild Under the ground So here I go A button on a string And I heard everything Now here I go Well.. Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way But in the end we all Come from what's come before So here I go Well.. Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way I threw it all away because I had to be what never was Been so hungry I could lie Took my word I took your wine And held you with my bloody hands These rattled bones and rubber bands Washed them in the muddy water Lookin' for a dime but found a quarter You can't make me change my name Will never make me change my name Pay no mind now ain't that somethin' Fuck it all I came from nothing I'm something From nothing You are my fuse I'm something From nothing You are my fuse It goes oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh It goes oh, oh, oh AHWLLLLLLLLLLL RISEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE No you can't make me change my name You'll never make me change my name Pay no mind now ain't that somethin' Fuck it all I came from nothing I'm something From nothing I'm something From nothing
Kurt would probably thinks it's awesome, just like any other former band member should think of their old bandmates new music. Even if kurt didn't like any of the songs he would probably still love it because one of his best friends created it and he could see and appreciate the creativity put into it. Kurt was a deep dude, he could look past the obvious and find deeper meanings in things.
There are always haters for everything. Seriously, all of you guys wish you were as talented as these guys. If you were, it'd be you making these sweet tracks. Fuck the haters, Foo Fighters rock. Not disappointed with this song at all, it's great
I love the song and am getting the album, but there's a difference between voicing one's disappointment toward something and being a "hater", jfc dude.
Ride the tiger! You can see his strips but you know he's clean, oh don't you see what i mean! Gotta get away, get away! & i was singing it in howard jones voice. Another great modern vocalist like dave grohl!
Lyric: Give me a flammable light I'm cold as a match ready to strike So here I go Here lies a city on fire Sailing alone The answer is quiet Now here I go It's starting with a spark And burning to the dark Now here I go There is a river I found into the wild Under the ground So here I go A burden on a string And I heard everything Now I here I go Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way But in the end we all Come forward, come before So here I go Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way I threw it all away because I had to be what never was Been so hungry I could lie Took my word, I took your lie In hell too with my bloody hands These arms will love a band Watch them in the money water Looking for a diamond around the corner But you can't make me change my name Will never make me change my name Ain't no valid wait for something All that came from nothing I'm so damned From nothing You are my fuse I'm so damned From nothing You are my fuse It goes It goes No you can't make me change my name You'll never make me change my name Ain't no valid wait for something All that came from nothing I'm so damned From nothing I'm so damned From nothing
The REAL LYRYCS: (I'm so sick of all those stupid lyric comments that have everything wrong). Give me the flammable life I'm cold as a match Ready to strike So here I go... Here lies a city on fire Singing along The arsonist choir Now here I go... It started with a spark And burned into the dark Now here I go... There is a river I found Into the wild Under the ground So here I go... A button on a string And I heard everything Now here I go... Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way But in the end we all Come from what's come before So here I go... Oh sweet ignition be my fuse You have no choice you have to choose Bid farewell to yesterday Say goodbye I'm on my way I threw it all away because I had to be what never was Been so hungry I could lie You took my word I took your wine And held you in my bloody hands These rattled bones and rubber bands Washed them in the muddy water Looking for a dime and found a quarter But you can't make me change my name You'll never make me change my name Pay no mind now ain't that something Fuck it all! I came from nothing I'm something From nothing You are my fuse I'm something From nothing You are my fuse It goes... Oh oh oh... Oh oh oh... Oh oh oh... It goes... Oh oh oh... ALL RISE!!! No you can't make me change my name You'll never make me change my name Pay no mind now ain't that something Fuck it all! I came from nothing I'm something From nothing I'm something From nothing
Actually, i didn't expected much, so this song didn't disappointed me... It's nice to hear one/two times, but it's nothing like Stacked Actors or Everlong. This, definitely, won't be one of their best albums. I hope that i'm mistaken
It's still Foo Fighters so it will still be godly! This song has a QotSA effect to it. The first time you hear it it sucks, but with every listen it gets 10x better!
***** At first, the lyrics dont blend well, but after a while it becomes amazing! On my first listen I thought it was average, but know its one of my favourites! Hopefully you can get into it. :)
420Leopard Foo Fighters aren't this...The lyrics and the riff until minute 1:30 are very good, i like it, but the next riffs just ' crash ' the music, you know what i mean?
Smart people don't have the need to reply to stupid negative comments, they just enjoy the great music and have no need to argue with dumb people, just look at the likes vs dislikes and you'll see :D
Moke McHelloThere they are only pessimistic in internet. they have nothing in real life. they judge the song by hearing it on youtube and google what is the perfect music. pretty much like kids today. :))
There's some talk about it being an intentional tribute, since holy diver was recorded in sound city studios I hope that is the case, since "Something from nothing" being a ripoff would be painfully ironic
All said and done, I still like it. Call me conformist or something like that, I don't care. I like this song because it's the kind of music that makes me love the Foo Fighters. This is the kind of music that I expect them to make, which is again the reason I like it. And as far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with that.
Moke McHelloThere No shit Sherlock of course their the foos, the person meant it has a very foo-fighters sound, their distinctive trademark sound. you must have no artistic ability or vision.
Visceral Twister Whoa there. I was just kidding, dude. That doesn't even reflect upon my "artistic ability" at all. Plus, I'm an artist and musician. I'm not stupid either. YOU must have no control over your anger. Oh, and you must be a moron, since you can't type correctly. See? How does it feel to be judged like that? Can't you just be happy?
Sounds like the Foo. Exactly what I wanted. Solid song from a talented band. Dave has more musical talent in his little toe than half the people commenting here do. Get over yourselves.
guirlache yeah my problem is they try sooooooo friggin' hard to prove they are cool and have classic rock/metal roots. It's all trying too hard. They had some good songs long long ago though.
This is one bad ass tune! I applaud the Foos and Dave for an amazing career. Fuck all the naysayers and over analyzers and just enjoy some awesome rock n roll.
The song is about music. How it can come from essentially nothing. How a masterpiece of complex rhythms and progressions can all be created from nothing to something, and it all starts with a spark. If you don't like the song it's alright, but you have to respect it. For those of you saying "he pulled it from his ass" you're telling a complete lie. If you know anything about Dave Grohl you'd know that he has deep respect for all music and it's origin, and has said before that he try's his absolute best to get a pure sound through analog and traditional recording methods, which is ten times harder. In the show Sonic Highways you can see how much he busted his ass producing and recording the entire thing. He got Chicago music legends to play and record all of his guitar rifts he wrote for this song to, add their personal touch to make it feel more like Chicago which is probably why it doesn't sound original it sounds more like Chicago. He put together the lyrics from the interviews he had with these music legends and made it into this song. I love this song and not because I'm just a "fanboy" who would like this song if it was just static noise, but because I respect the effort, meaning, and genuine care and love he put in to this. The sound of this song still sounds like foo fighters, and I love that too, but if you don't like foo fighters you probably don't like this song. It's okay to not like the song but don't disrespect it because that reflects on you as a person not being honest, but instead a cynical bastard who likes making people angry because he has a shallow life. Sorry for long comment I just want to say there's no need for such harsh comments. Thank you
Rope was horrible....worst song on their best album WL. Don't make that the baseline for your opinion on every FF album from there forward. Grohl can basically do no wrong in my eyes. :)
Since you have an A7x profile pic, they did the exact same thing recently, with songs from their album "Hail to the the King" sounding similiar to popular 70s metal songs
***** For me looking back on wasting light is like looking back on echoes silence patience and grace, I dunno man, I loved it at the time, but maybe I listened to the album too Mutch, but it reminds me of Espg's mainstreamness, there isn't an songs that really stick out apart from rope.
HUGE Foo Fighters fan here. I really like the song... I don't love it. It IS a grower though and the lyrics add to its quality in the same way they did in Best of You. A life-affirming and empowering song. As an album opener I think it's great - a bit like the track In Your Honour in that it doesn't have that typical Foo song structure but serves as a platform for the rest of the album (I assume). What I personally want now from the rest of the album are those anthemic Foo Fighters choruses that this song doesn't have. That said, I can totally see screaming "I'm something, from nothing" amongst tens of thousands of others at a Fooeys gig.
Rike Echoes... has nothing to do with this song, this song is a mix of Wasting Light and a new experimental sound. Listen to the effect used from 2:05 upto around 3:00, that's something they have never done before and I'm not really digging how it sounds, the rest is good and the end is fantastic! But it's definitely not perfect.
Osnel Bolivar si ecce.. pero vamos a darle un chance al disco completo. es raro porque ellos siempre empiezan con un single fuerte (que termina siendo el unico pesado del disco)
people need to stop comparing what artists release now to what they released 10 years ago. appreciate music for what it is. bands evolve and change. if you dont like it then gtfo
Todd Rundgren did a song of the same name last year. Great minds think alike. Sounds like "I Should Have Known" on steroids. Fuck all the "running on fumes" reviews. This is brilliant and genuine
Lol there is a riff in this song that sounds so much like Dio's Holy Diver.... Definitely not original.... But that doesn't mean it's bad either. I still enjoy it.
InFiiLtRaTor Considering the whole album's concept is to be a "musical map" of america, I think it's more of a tribute than copying. The stevie wonderness etc. It's all paying tribute to music. Very original
Whoever says this is fresh and original music ... man you gotta really expand your musical horizons. There is so much indy / local rock bands that are actually doing something new and exciting. I do respect Foo's big time, but this is just running out of gas quick... I live in Vancouver BC, and I religiously go to local shows and see so much local talent that unfortunately is not widely known, but really redefines "fresh and original". This sounds like any other Foo's record at best.. but lets see what the rest of the album is.
PHENOMENAL song. I love the Dio influence to this song. To the naysayers, the Dio riff was intentional. If you've paid any attention to what Dave's been doing the last few years, you would understand. He's paying tribute to some of his favorite artists through the Sound City documentary and the Sonic Highways documentary and album. They're not "ripping off" from Dio. They're paying their respects. I am even more excited than before for this album. Can't wait for November 10th!
the best song i have been listen too since a long time! great. just great! i flew last month espacially from germany to london to see them there at the invictus games..
I like it, but does the band realize they sound pretty stupid when they make a big deal about recording to tape, how much new recording methods suck, etc.....and then crush the dynamics in mastering? And then their new album, called SONIC Highways, also has all of the dynamics taken out of it? It's just a big block of sound, no highs, no lows. And for the haters, I LIKE THIS SONG. But come on people, STOP RUINING MUSIC BY CONSTANTLY MAKING EVERYTHING THE SAME VOLUME. THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANY BAND TO DO THIS!!!
LOL. Yup. Dave is pretty much the definition of a rock star and is amazing live but man o man.. It really does seem like he came to a crazy conclusion about how much better analogue recording is. It's like he listened to a bunch of quantized pitch corrected music and decided that all music recorded onto a DAW has that quality to it. I also find it funny how even audio professionals do not know why people tend to favor vinyl. The audio quality is not as precise on vinyl but what happens is that the interpolation between the guesswork of the waveforms is not exact like in a digital format so you end up getting little finite distortion while listening to a vinyl which is why people say it sounds warmer and brighter.. basically the audio is not perfect. Anyway.. as far as this compression stuff. The reason why they do that is so it sounds good in a car. you won't really hear any songs on the radio that have a dynamic difference in DB of more than like 5db. Another thing too .. the loudness thing comes from if you play 2 songs back to back people will tend to favor the louder one. Also a lot of people have crappy speakers / ipod earbuds. BONK >_
I like looking at this song lyrically... 4 4 3 4 3 4 3 16. And each group before the large, extended verse are all building up to the extended verse. Each group is part of the fuse. And when we get to "Oh sweet ignition, be my fuse" the first time, the F# minor really comes in with the cool melodic ascent line (If I can type it out, haha, "Badda mm mm badda mm mm ba ba ba"). And then we get to the extended verse - the 16. Each group of 4 is marked by an added idea (not to mention, that added electric bass makes it damn sexy). ...So yeah, I accept my musical nerdiness!
Why cant the whole song be like from the 3:38 mark on? I will always love the Foo's but I want them to go back to the first 2 albums sound. Tired of the bland rock n roll sound. There is enough of that shit out there as is.
I can agree that from 3:38 on the song is much more interesting, but it is because of progression. Dave has made this song build in ways he hasn't before. This track is already a lot more different in structure from Wasting Light or any of their previous work. Without the first part of a song, it is an unfinished love affair buddy
A whole song built around the last minute would be quite bland in my opinion. You get through the quieter bit of the song and then the loud section arrives and it's just so much more powerful!
I don't think that many people realise, that those songs were kind of written "on the spot" there wasn't much time. That was the Foo's challenge. You can say that it's typical FF, nothing original etc. but honestly.. what else would you want? If they would start doing some techno shit, like some of those bands that were really great in the rock music industry.. you would complain anyways. I really like this thing about FF, that they really keep their style, it's pure 100% Rock. And of course, particular parts of some songs, no matter of band, are gonna sound familiar, because there's been so much done in the rock world.. so many people get influenced by so many great songs, resulting that they want to make something familiar, but from themselves.. Long story short: We should be glad that we get, what we get.. because it could be way worse.. but no, it's just rock'n'roll and that's the most important!
I really don't understand all the hate towards this album, i'm 18 years old and enjoy a band that develops more as it gets older, sure it ain't "The Colour and the Shape", but "Animals" wasn't "The Dark Side of the Moon", "No Code" wasn't "Ten", and "In Utero" wasn't "Nevermind". Point is I think the Foo Fighters are doing an amazing job with their career and I really can't wait to see what they do next. The Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam have never let me down with their music.
I've been reading these comments and it seems like no one has anything positive to say about the Foo's new music so far. I've come to the conclusion that the majority of people who comment are negative people. Because look at all the negativity in the comments, but then look at the like to dislike ratio. More people obviously like this music rather than dislike it. And yes I know being a bit of a hypocrite here, but still...
For all you 'haters' saying this isn't "fresh" or "Indy"-check yourselves-why would the foo fighters want to sound anything like what's "fresh" today?! Music today lacks so much personality it's not even funny. Dave had it right from the beginning, why change a great thing? If it ain't broke, why fix it
This song just came out, and everyone is giving it such a bad taste, saying it is a disappointment, booring, bland, a stolen part of Holy diver, that it is too polished and, at the same time, people are saying that it is not polished at all and wasn't ready to be released, or made into a single for the whole album. Like what? This song, literally feels so complete. It is both lyrical, sing-along-able, melodic, yet raw, emotional, personal and also loud. I find this song to be one of their best releases they have ever done. There have been so many other one hit wonders that people like from them, yet are clearly worse than this. ''Wheels'', ''Monkey Wrench'', ''Learn to fly'' as just a few examples. I'm not saying that I don't like the songs, but c'mon, noone dishes those ones. This one is golden, and we all know that the similarity to ''Holy diver'' is unintentional. Do you really think that Dave and the band would just sit down at a table and would be like - ''Damn, guys, we must make a rip off of something. - Holy diver! - Oh! Great idea! Noone will notice.''
Really enjoy the song. Those are who are complaining about how it sounds like Holy Diver by Dio that might be the point. It was said Sonic Highways will be a "a love letter to the history of American music" which could mean we might here riffs or undertones from other songs.
My first impression was "f*ck, this song sucks". But after I saw them performing the same song live on Letterman I realized the song is awesome, but this version here is SO... OVER.. PRODUCED it kills all the energy in the song. Rock 'n' Roll ain't about perfectly tuned and timed guitars with behaved drumming and vocals. Kurt knew that, and that's why he hated Butch Vig's production on Nervermind.
It's an OK album opener. It starts out your basic riff rocker, then gets a little funky midway then reverts into your usual Grohl screaming his guts out headbanging fest.
