Today we discuss some strategies and recommendations we use to deal with this drought. Red clover northwoodswhitetails.com/prod... Northwoods Whitetails products. northwoodswhitetails.com/shop... #deerhunting #foodplots #hunting
Since you come aboard, I pretty much have stopped watching other You Tube channels. There is only so much time one can spend watching videos. I like a good education in a 15 minute session. Keep up the good work.
I think the biggest takeaway from most of our ideas and recommendations is keep something growing as much as possible. Wether it’s deer food or soil building, green is good.
My HD screen is 3 inches high here in Vermont on the New York border! It looks great! Very excited to watch it grow! Great video! My buckwheat is doing very good also!
I like your seclusion blend and red clover with a bag of short season brassica in fall. bag of each mixed to 1/2 acre. Thinking that will b my go to hear on out.
Great content and very helpful! Here in NY along the VT border we didn't have rain all spring but we just started getting into a rain cycle and things are greening up!
Great information! I am a huge fan of using no-till by broadcasting into standing vegetation and then flattening it, but it requires more moisture than drilling. I frost seeded several perennial plots this spring, and they are doing great.
Planted your clover chicory blend mother's day weekend in nw lower Michigan. Totally new plot and have to say even with the drought I'm impressed. The clover is slightly stunted from the heat and drought but the chicory is doing amazing!
Last years drought caused us to build an irrigation system here in NW lower Michigan, with 3 zones of 7 rotors in our plot. It’s portable above ground using 275G IBC tote ,trailering water. Last 5 days we put down 5000 gallons to keep screening and perennials germinating. Hoping for this weekend forecast to hold true 🤞🏼.
My property is located in Northeast Wisconsin near Amberg. I have no problem with a perennial plot, granted I've seen most of the older bucks showing up at night, but I am seeing younger bucks (spikes and 4 pointers in the day time. We are trying to build up our soil because it is mostly woods and some opened areas that haven't been worked in years. I have no problems with the does hanging around, I look at as a buck goes searching for does not the other way around.
As always, I appreciate the content Jon. I can’t help but notice the comment about doe factories. It sounds like a direct shot at Jeff Sturgis and WHS. I listen to and appreciate both of you guys, as well as Bill Winke in Iowa (obligatory Go Big Red). Hopefully it’s just a difference of opinion and there’s no bad blood there.
I agree with you about the doe factory theory. That said I do agree that summer food is not necessary to “build “ a herd. Summer is a time of plenty for sure. The average guy with even a couple hundred acres isn’t going to be able to “build “ or drastically affect the local deer herd health with food plots. Even a couple acre food plot doesn’t provide much more overall benefit to a free range deer than a bait pile. It’s a fallacy imo. I do utilize perennials often but for different reasons.
Habitat can create that situation, it’s not just food like you’ve been led to believe. I watched bucks all summer and well into fall here share the same food plots with does. They were here because of food, proper layout and they both had their own space.
Great video full of great insights! For perenials, would it make sense to do a two strip system in a food plot, one with perennials and one with fall food only?
Never in my 52 years have I seen a drought start in March and become worse all spring. Hoping for something to change by August or September. This is just devastating.
Our drought in Tennessee was early this year by about 2 months and after following last years drought, I was worried, BUT we had a really wet start to the year. Hopefully we dont follow this up with another drought in July and August.
@@georgehelzer7569 We are finally getting some rain, but it's too late for the summer release crop. It has burnt up, nothing left. So, now I have nothing as a cover for when I plant late August/September. Last summer and fall was horrific, and this year is even worse. Hope for the best for everyone out there.
I’m in NY and planted buckwheat early (just before Memorial Day) due to my schedule and it just popped up about a week ago. I did a light chain harrow drag after I broadcast it and I think covering it along with some morning dew saved it. Switchgrass nowhere to be seen and screen planted last week is not showing.
John I bought your switchgrass earlier this spring. My ground which has been a grass field for many years has been prepped. I’m debating whether to wait for a lot of rain or just frost seeding in December. Any suggestions. I would be broadcasting it.
Man At this point and weather situation, if you can’t bury it or get it covered , may be best to wait. But that could change in 12-14 days if rains come back.
Thanks for modifying videos to pertain to current conditions. Because of the drought and lack of time or location of plots to be unable to switch up planting plans this summer, some are going to find themselves with food plot failures come mid to late August and looking for something to plant late season to get something green growing going into fall. What do you suggest as a plan B for food plot failures going into fall? Cereal rye, Fall Forage blend? Do you recommend anything different for a plan B failure in big woods northern MN vs plan B failure in central MN heavy agriculture area? May make a good segment this year.
I’m planning on drilling my seed because of dry conditions. Whats the best way to adjust your grain drills to a multi mix planting like soil builder mixed with WDS. Would love to see videos on these types of planters
Working on my first attempt at a food plot. Ground has been tilled with no herbicide. Looks quite bare. With rain expected this weekend I want to get something in the ground. Should I look at getting rye or buckwheat in and plant my clover/chicory no till later?
Yeah I’m in Jefferson county Pennsylvania just north of I 80 planted corn and your screen on June 7th corn doing great screen not doing good I’m Confident it’s going to be a bust my first time planting screen but been good plotting plots for years?
