My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article ru-vid.comUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.
I read the book 'REVERSING diabetes' by Dr. Neal Bernard over 20 years ago and this was the single source to get me off Diabetes medication. My A1c is currently around 5.6, I would highly recommend anyone with diabetes to read this book.
In 2016, I was shocked and appalled that my A1C was 8.6 and at the same time was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I immediately became obsessed with you tube videos with content from doctors like Dr Barnard. I immediately became vegan. This is extremely difficult in my household as my husband is an incredible professional chef. He prepares amazing and very unhealthy meals filled with butter, oils and meat! It was very difficult at times to resist his culinary art so I hopped on a plane and headed to the Optimum Health Institute in San Diego. I completely reversed my diabetes! I went from an 8.6 to a 4.4 A1C. Once I returned, I found a lWFPB Dr. He ordered that I get a biopsy of my thyroid. The result came back as 98% positive for cancer. I was in the hospital 4 days later to have my thyroid removed. But, the endocrinologist was also WFPB. He gave me several options before surgery. The option I chose was for him to remove the half with the lump, send it to frozen pathology while still on the operating table. It cam back NEGATIVE for cancer. He sewed me up and I got to keep the remaining part of my thyroid. My hormone levels were NORMAL!!!!Now its 2022. I have fallen off the wagon and I feel as though I gave my middle finger to my good fortune back then. Im ashamed to say that I started eating my husbands food in addition to not exercising etc. I just went to my doctor because i knew for certain something was wrong with me. I knew my diabetes was back! I just received my blood work and my A1C is 12.7!!!!!! I am disgusted with myself. Especially because I already have the education that prevents diabetes. Surprisingly enough, my hormone levels still remain in normal ranges!!!Now here I am again. Tail between my legs. Day 1. Thank you Dr Barnard for making this content so readily available. Ive done it before. I can do it again. ❤
@@sonflowerday thank you so much!!!! My A1C has dropped to an average of 8.0. I still have a ways to go but in 3 weeks, I dropped my levels 4.7 points!!!! Im motivated
@@angelikapaul2998 from 12.7 to 8.0 in 3 weeks!! How did you do that? What all did you eat? How often? My A1c is on the border and my dictor put me on medication because I've high cholesterol and BP. I'm desperate to bring it down to 5 and get off this medication. I hope I can but I'm struggling for sure.
Now I’m totally confused. I wish someone would come out with a sample diet. So tired of all the mixed messages and no help from my doctors. Every time I research the subject, the sides switch as what I should be eating and what I should be avoiding.
Amen!!! I feel same. My dr. Say some fruits has more natural sugar then others. Watch ur portions only 1 cup fresh fruits a day. Watermelon has high sugar eat 1 slice. Watch ur carbs & sugar
I totally agree no one agrees. It is so confusing. One says the whole food plant based studies are wrong. The others say keto tests are wrong. Totally contradict each other. And my doctor is no help either. I asked my cardiologist and she didn't have q clue and nutritionists don't agree either.
Hon the Doctors finally admitted I was diabetic in 2002 when I had such a bad asthma attack at work, I was repeating my nurses instructions to hang up and call 911. LOL I WAS the H&S person that usually called 911. My BS's were 417 when they got there & 571 when I got to the ER Bed. I've gone thru 4 classes tons of online and individual "consults", spent an average of $7-8,000 a year looking for cures & miracles & now just follow food. All I can say is do not let your disease(s?) run your life. I found 1 doctor who said "You, are the only one within that body, so I need you to keep tabs on everything new, different, good & bad, & how your system reacts. Because I'm good at putting that together" I've had 4 like that in my lifetime. My Cardiologist is like that just wish my others were.
Respectfully i appreciate your kind gesture Dr igho, you have always been able to help with any of my health Issues, I didn't know how to Face the Stigma of living with Diabetes but I'm happy to say today that I'm glad to have you as my doctor because it just seems like magic.

I love you guys so much! Chuck you are so awesome and I could listen to Dr Barnard all day every day and never get tired of it! Thank you for all you do!
I have been a Vegan for last 2 years and I feel so great. I am so happy that I have taken Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr Caldwell Esselstyn's advice on natural plan based diet. No oil, meat, eggs, no processed foods and diary for me....Live free.
@@annejames890 I eat Ezekiel English Muffins mostly for breakfast with some english almond milk tea. And will add a banana and some grapes. Sometime I will get some white bread with some fiber and low sugar and no oil. I also make lentil curry (water, spices, onions and tomatoes) for lunch and dinner. Also I add lots of fruits, popaya, chickpeas (boiled with some added spices and some tamarind sauce). I also eat dates, apples, and try to add lots of fruits. I sometime add semi boiled spinich with some balsamic viniger.
What's confusing is that some on keto claim to get great lab numbers and believe to have lower inflammation which can lead to calcification of arteries.
I can vouch that when I went on a coconut oil binge for a while a few years ago, my cholesterol jumped A LOT despite being vegan. It came back down when I quit coconut oil.
I am 59 years old and no doctor has ever told me or my family about a healthier eating lifestyle. I'm going to my family doctor next week and you bet I'll ask them why. Great video. Much health and happiness to you! ❤❤❤
@@victoriabachmann-osin1946 apples are great if you are also reducing your fat intake like Dr Barnard suggests. I just spent money on some high priced tennis shoes. I think I will spend a little to read his reversing diabetes book and get rid of my pre diabetes. You have to know that pre-diabetes is just diabetes that has not been formally diagnosed yet. However the effects of diabetes are already beginning to happen without being called diabetes. We’ve got a nip this stuff in the bud and stop at well before it becomes truly diagnosable as diabetes. Don’t run from diabetes. Run toward normal blood sugars!
My dr was not thrilled when I told her. She still keeps prescribing me meds but I do not take them. I started to see her Aug 2022 my a1c was 12.9 and my last visit Sept 2023 my a1c is 7.9. I been following plant based whole foods to the best I can.
I smoothed 2 okra, 2 -1” sliced of bitter melon 3 stalk of asparagus with 1 cup of organic apple juice and 2 tbsp of aloe Vera juice for my diabetes. I also take a clove of organic garlic after lunch .
This is so great! Wonderful information about diabetes. There is so much of it in my relatives on both sides of the family that I have been really concerned. Thank you for the answers to so many of my questions. I am about 95 - 98% vegan at this point and still working on it.
yea.. but the rest of your family is NOT going to be able to go on a Vegan diet! Vegan is a diet of calorie deprivation in disguise and why it REALLY works. (hint...loosing weight). plenty of better diets that are realistic.
Thank you so much for doing all this research. I am older, and have lost 80 lbs, but it's been some time. I'm back on a losing plan, and don't want to go back, so thank you for talking about not eating fatty vegs, (nuts, seeds, avocado) I'm finally not eating these plus avoid flour products. It's been such a struggle for me, but was testing high for blood sugar a few years ago, in spite of knowing about and saying that I was following the wfpb no oil eating plan. I also avoid salt. For those of us who have been close to the edge, Thank you, Dr. Barnard. I'm losing weight again, and getting the best nutrition possible.
Thank you very much and God bless you both. Looking forward to further episodes. Most doctors dont tell us what to do to lower sugars and cholesterol so thank you very much.
Over 20 years ago I was diagnosed diabetic 2, these doctor prescribed the usual Metformin and Crestor for the cholesterol, I study the side effects of these drugs and decided not to take any conventional drugs. I started on my own to select and eat low glycemic food, plenty of exercise and have peace of mind by doing some spiritual exercises. All this time rejecting doctor prescribed drugs from other doctors. Over a year ago my diabetes was affecting my feet, so I decided to follow the Keto diet and life style, I have been doing it for over a year with minimum results, glucose around 200. Now I found Dr. Neal Barnard over a week ago, gave away all the meat in my refrigerator and started the vegan only diet. In only two days I noticed my constipation, gone, my acid reflex, gone, a couple of days after I noticed my mind clearing up and a sense of well being, however my glucose meter is now registering a number close to 400 no matter what I eat, I will continue being vegan to see how long it takes for the reading to drop.
@@myindiemusic4291 Thanks for asking: I consider myself a rebel, I have refused to take manmade drugs for diabetes. I was a contractor in my working years, I got a contract to work for company that builds treatment centers for an industry that grows 17% a year, I traveled to work on several cities where they have a center. I made friends with employees and with some patients, as a result I came to the conclusion that if not all, 95% of the patients were suffering from Diabetes 2 and under doctors care, these labs are the last place they go to before they die and the treatment is " Kidney Dialysis" So, my glucose is still high and so of course is the A1c but I have no symptoms, my eyes, feet, legs are fine, I do exercise a lot, gym for two hours four times a week, meals with no carbs, no sweets, organic food when I find it, I also practice a form of meditation called "Contemplation" so there is no stress in my life. The way I see it is that already live long enough. Also I was not born with this condition, I got it because of poor nutrition, stress and not taking care of my body, therefore by reversing the wrong things I did the body will respond and so far it has. Thanks again
Hi Chuck, I know u get a ton of messages, but could you please ask Dr Barnard (or other PC drs to please have a closer look at the following from the blood sugar spike and generally health perspective pls? 😃 1) Potatoes, best way to prepare them 2) the whole "resistant starch" thing when it comes to potatoes and rice and wheat please? 🙏
I think the person that wrote in about intermittent fasting meant was compressing your consumption of food into something like a 6 hour time window, only eating between 12 noon and 6 pm. Delaying breakfast and not eating after dinner. Can you ask Dr B about this? Thanks
I used keto (high protein and fat) in 3 months my A1C went from 6.5 to 5.4 , my triglycerides went from 179 to 49 , I lost 60 pounds and I’m feeling better
a friend who took 10 percent of the advise of this information, without even really understanding the issue, still managed to reduce his diabetes and other related kidney issues in a few days...
As always, thank you so much for this life saving information. You guys are amazing. I never understood diabetes until I listened to doctor Barnard explain it. As Einstein said, " if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough ".
Thanks Dr Barnard for your platform on Diabetes. I have been with diabetes for 15yrs and using all the tablets prescribed by my doctor but I have never felt so good as I am doing now that I learnt to use the directions that I followed from your programme. This I have done only for a month now. I am going to visit my doctor this week and have a discussion with him. I am still using his medication however.Thank you Dr Barnard.
When We are born genetically are not attracted to Veggies like all other animals. You will need to be very informed on this Diet to take the Supplements to a complete healthy nutrition. Fatty Acids (Fats) and Amino Acids (Proteins) are essential for human. survival, Not Carbohydrates are essential. I have been doing Fasting for 3 years and Loving it. 😍
I checked out the video version of Dr. Barnard’s book for reversing diabetes, and I am loving my blood sugars. I have gone from out of control to very close to ideal very quickly. I was having blood sugars in the three and four hundreds to consistently under two hundred. I can’t wait to see more improvements! Thank you Dr. Barnard! God bless and stay veggie! 🥗✝️❤️
Congratulations! Can you please tell me this. Was your blood sugar three and four hundreds in the morning when you test it or all day? Thankyou in advance!
Dr Bernard, I like the way you explain the diabetes. The question on fat consumption, in one of the video by a nutritionist on Tedx talk, recommended to use high fat, high protein and low carb diet. But you mentioned if we eat more fat it increases insulin resistance. It’s completely different perspectives by qualified medical professionals and confusing more. Can you please throw some light on that topic ?
Hey I think I saw that video! I'm a nurse and have also increased my education beyond nursing school on topics of health and wellness. I wonder if I can shed some light on the topic. It was a lady saying she puts her patients on low carb, normal protein, high fat diets. She does this because fat can't spike blood sugar. She said patients would be cured, as long as they kept eating that way-meaning kept eating low carb. In my mind, her approach very well treats the symptoms of diabetes (having high blood sugar). If you don't take it any glucose, you won't have a lot of glucose in your blood, giving you normal blood sugar. And normal blood sugar over time makes a normal A1C, even if your cells are still jammed up with fat. While having normal blood sugar certainly would help you avoid many complications of diabetes, she doesn't address the cause of diabetes at all, or health overall. It's very well supported that high fat diets cause decreased heart health. She cited a study that showed A1C goes down to non-diabetic levels on her diet. But it didn't say anything about addressing the cause. Just addressing high blood sugar. Admittedly, if someone were to do her diet instead of living off pizza and donuts It would be a lot better. But she doesn't mention the cause of diabetes at its core. I love Dr. Bernard's approach (which is consistent with Dr. Gregor, forks over knifes, and the work of Tony Robbins along with others who have many many patients who years later are still thanking them for healing them from not just Diabetes but many ailments. Look at Dr. Gregor's website/books to see a bounty of breathtaking and high quality research he's collected on the topic of diabetes reversal. I was confused at first too watching that Ted talk. But thinking through it for a few minutes I'm no longer at all conflicted. Low carb may prevent symptoms (while possibly clogging your arteries and causing other problems from a diet high in fat), but plant based will support full healing through and through from everything from diabetes to heart disease to many types cancer.
Hi Dr Barnard. I'm not sure which podcast you discussed fasting. You, as I recall dismissed it, saying that you would use it as an excuse to eat more when you came off the fast. I respect your views, but you really should do some research on the benefits of autophagy where your body after about 18 hours, begins " eating old and damaged cells, including cancer cells. Cancer cells become weaker as they need glucose to thrive. They are not getting that supply when you fast. Please tell people the benefits of fasting and intermittent fasting. Thank you.
Thank you doctor. I vanted to mention something for kids. I belive that activity in the modern world for kids is limited especially in countries that have to much snow. I am grown-up in western of Europe and as a child,I remember that always my joy was to get out and to play with my friends, running and enjoying out on the sun.In the modern world kids are in the car, play inside the house,go in school with parents in the car again. I belive the activity and friendship play a role also in their life. I am not mentioning adults. Thank you very much doctor 🙏 Your advices will help us more.
I respectfully would just like to say, that there’s a lot well researched information available regarding diabetes & insulin resistance & diabetes reversal, that allows for meat & dairy (providing you have no allergies) which cautions against excessive fructose found in fruit. I agree it can get confusing with too many different viewpoints, but it's so important to find what really works regarding diabetes intervention. It’s well worth investing time in some comparative presentations/research.
The science all points to animal protein consumption being at the forefront of illness and disease. It’s really a matter of accepting the truth so that we can find health and healing.
Respectfully I have tried many of the diets recommended for diabetes and the only one that has worked well for me is a plant based diet my diabetic condition has improved on plant based diet and not on the others
I'm 32 and after a trip to the ER I found out that I'm undiagnosed with diabetes. Right now I'm absolutely terrified to eat anything since I'm also without insurance or a primary doctor. It feels like getting my sugar down is so difficult, but it jumped from 213 to 267 after 1 kiwi.
@@skinnydee1886 I'm sorry for the confusion. I do have diabetes , but didn't know it. That's why it was undiagnosed. I've officially been diagnosed, as of Tuesday, after getting a primary doctor.
I have been doing 18/6 intermittent fasting, cut out sugar, rice and all kinds of bread. I have not eaten meat for many years. I only eat limited amount of seafood and no more than one egg a day. All my numbers have returned to 20 years ago. Everything is way within the normal range. I do think sugar and refined grains are part of the problems as well as animal products.
Thanks for the great discussion. Coming from a couple years of LOW carb diet to control diabetes here where I gained 10 pounds. This is amazing information and makes sense health-wise. I've been switched to doing the WFPBNO now for a few weeks, but haven't seen even a pound dropped. You just shed the light on why....NUTS, nut butters, pumpkin seeds, avocados. Thank you for setting me straight! Back to the drawing board...try again!
Make sure you're lifting weights, as this will help you lose fat. You can eat nuts, avo's etc........just stick to one serving. If you don't have a whole lot of weight to lose, it will take a bit of time to start seeing a pound or two drop off. Slow and steady wins the race. Make sure you're getting enough calories.
Fruit does raise blood sugar. Plus I am a skinny diabetic, no fat on me. Low carb and intermittent fasting is working better than my "healthy" diabetic diet the last 15 years!
I am totally excited for this information. Very clearly explained. It's go time! I've recently had bloodwork done and it wasn't good. Starting WFPB diet now. Will recheck my bloodwork in 3 months
YES to another follow up to this video episode! Thank you Dr Barnard! I am following these guidelines but adding staying away from nuts and nut butters. Need to get my weight down and get rid of this diabetes! Thank you DR BARNARD ❤️
I have been almost on vegan diet from 2018 My HbA1C is down to 5.3 from 6.6 I lose 17 kg weight. My LDL-cholesterol is 95 mg/dL for the first time . Thank Dr. Neal Barnard so much. You save and change my life!
Yes! Great info as usual. Sharing this with my grandkids too! Thank you both for your fantastic show! I was prediabetic before going wfpb. Now my labs are great. Other issues that were creeping up reversed as well.
Thanks for this! God' s Peace to you both! You are changing the world for the better! This is a very important topic that many are confused on.👍💓🙏🕊🍃🌱🎉...For our health, for the animals, and for the preservation of nature...for all of creation...yes--- chase the plants!🙏
Very strange...totally opposite from what other doctors says. My bloodpressure are 115/70 and I am 64 years old. I eat mostly fish, meat, egg, chicken, no carbs. No junkfood or any McDonalds.
Being pressured at my age with "got milk" everywhere and only having milk in school for free lunches. Looking back really messed my body up from calcium deposits on my knees, bad teeth, and now insulin issues, I switched to almond and nut milks and so has my children and after covid now they take water bottle to school since school charges $1 for a small water bottle but milk is on the free lunch menu. Working in the lunch room we throw away alot of milk that isn't evan open but make the kids get a milk with there meal it's crazy.
Ok, it all sounds excellent, but I still have a question about “healthy oils” like OLIVE and AVOCADO oils. Can we still have those in small/moderate amounts…..?
What about eating sardines for the omega or some fish? I know it is not plant based and is fatty but what if that's the only animal protein you eat along with Dr. Barnard's prescribed eating way??
Why are you saying "debunking"? How do you know that what Dr Berg is advising is not correct? Are you aware that Neal Barnard is associated with the Seventh Day Adventist church which discourages meat?
I am 68 yr old now and eat healthy most of the time don't drink don't smoke never smoked i am not a diabete I am not on any meds. I want to grow old healthy thanks for your good advice.... but I love cheese n dairy and meats and fish so guess I will just eat them once in a while
if you can’t stop eating meat eat less that’s good. If everyone ate 25% less meat it would probably cure many of the problems that are caused by livestock and hunger in the world. If we can get it to 50% even better the idea is work on getting it lower not on maintaining what you were doing now. You can be a warrior just by not eating something even in a small amount every single thing helps.
I love bread doctor 🙊 I can make oats bread with kayle and coconut milk yeast salt and water healthy bread..I LOVE BREAD IT TELLS ME I AM SPECIAL IT GIVES ME A WARM FEELING OF LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE WHEN I AM GIVEN BREAD ... BREAD IS A GIFT FROM GOD TO ME 🥰
I'm not a doctor. My experience, however has been different in my insulin spikes and A1c, at my last draw I was at 5 for A1c, I'm down 30 lbs and I don't follow a plant based diet. Carbs appear to be my enemy... I introduced potatoes and grain bread and gained weight with major spikes, this was even with a counting calories. I went back to no breads, no potatoes, I eat green leafy vegs, eat meat, have cheese on occasion, Oikos triple zero yogurt etc... and my doctor says at this rate I will be able to come off my insulin. I'm willing to do more non-meat but have been doing fine even with meat.
No doctor I have access to through my insurance has been thrilled to know I am choosing a whole foods plant based diet to treat my illnesses. The opposite is true. They are skeptical and even scornful of the idea, very unsupportive! Clearly, they are lacking when it comes to nutrition education. I have tried to teach such physicians by bringing them books, providing links to articles and videos, but their negative attitudes have remained the same. I am forced to keep changing doctors in my attempts to find one who is open minded enough to take my positive results into account and learn more. It’s all very sad, tragic, really. And I do not understand why insurance companies like mine don’t hire more plantricians and other WFPB supportive physicians. In my area there is no option to join Kaiser Permanente or other educated insurance companies. Going without medical support or insurance would be extremely costly.
Update: The WFPB nutrition worked! According to my recent lab tests I am no longer diabetic! My new doctor is thrilled and said that I’m not even pre-diabetic now! My A1C dropped from 8.8 to 5.3, all because of the whole plant foods I am now permanently choosing to eat. And I have not taken ANY of the medication that was originally prescribed by the unsupportive physician that I fired. I am healthier now than I ever was during the last 70 years. I may be late to the WFPB feast, but I am going to enjoy it! As side benefits my energy has gone through the roof and 47 lbs. have effortlessly melted away. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to Dr. Barnard and many others who have shown me the way. Thank you, thank you!!!
I agree. Until I was lucky enough to join Kaiser I did not have a physician who supported my choices. I also purchased books and gave them to my Doctor who at least understood what I was doing and did not try to "change" my mind but repeatedly stressed I needed to supplement with protein. Lol. I wish you the best in your quest!
Look for a DO instead of an MD. DO= doctor of osteopathy. DOs seems to be more integrative of natural practices. Or look for someone who says they are holistic practitioner.
1) Vitamin B12 is available in animal protein but non-existent in plant based diet. 2) The body needs Omega 3 fatty acids, e.g in chia seeds, flax seeds, more than it needs Omega 6. 3)Vitamin D3 (in grass-fed meet, sardines cod liver oil) is very important for calcium metabolism. Thanks for your lectured, sir.

Dr Barnard, thanks for teaching about diabetes. I am 116 lbs 5.2,only. I don't want to lose weight, but I am diabetic around 10 yeas. taking metformin 1000 mg BID. how should I control diabetes and maintain weight. I have been watching your programs.
I have not lost a pound and went WPF only . Blood sugar is 200-300 and my last A1c did go down from 10.2 to 8.1 with massive fasting. I have heart disease too. I am super focused to get thinner and stopped eating animal and don’t eat processed sugary stuff at all!!! My lipids all went way up. What am I doing wrong
One more comment; Dr Barnard is an excellent Doctor without a doubt and I enjoy listening to him often enough but I strongly disagree with his analysis on this occasion! All I can say bring a live person or group of people and let us see on your channel their sugar reading after consuming such diet!
I am a triple negative breast cancer patient i used plant base diet food no sugar no dairy products no sweeter Only whole grains vegetables fruits beans weson corn oil and my sugar is 134
I also read Dr. Barnards book this information was also very helpful to me being healthy. Get healthy go vegan is the best information I have ever received. Everyone I who is pre diabetic or diagnosed should definitely follow this information!
I once had meat stored in a plastic box, it was so hard to get the grease cleaned from the box, it was so stuck and needed lots of soap and scrubbing! Now imagine what it does inside your blood, cells and gut....
Dr Neal Barnard, its a bless to found you on youtube. And thanks to physicians committee team. You covered a lot of good topics, but i couldn’t find the one about plant protein absorbtion. Bioavailability. Is it true that plant protein have a very low rate ? This topic is important for a lot of people. Please answer or provide the link if You ever discuss about this. Best regards !!
Thank you very much for educating me on diabetes. I have lived with diabetes for 19 yrs now but I have learnt a lot from your videos. I am from Sierra Leone in West Africa. We grow a lot of sweet potatoes here. Can sweet potatoes be part of my diet?
