What you are looking at is a rare plinian eruption of the Ruang volcano on April 17th, 2024, which generated a 2 kilometer or 6,600 foot tall lava fountain. This plinian eruption lasted between 8:05 pm and 10:15 pm local time, sending large volumes of ash, tephra, pumice, and gasses to a height of 21 kilometers or 69,000 feet. Plinian eruptions are so named because they look like the stone pine tree (species Pinus pinea) as described by Pliny the Elder when witnessing Mount Vesuvius's infamous eruption in 79 CE. Ruang's eruption had an estimated volcanic explosivity index of a 4, and was the largest eruption it produced in recorded history.

I plan to donate 50% of this video's monetized revenue to Info GA dan MKG, which will provide every need for the affected people of Ruang and Tagulandang Islands, especially the evacuees who were impacted by this natural disaster. This will occur on April 27th, 2024, upon which time I will provide a screenshot to my audience proving of the donated money.

After a night of chaos, things are getting a bit better now. The explosions have stopped, for now. There's no more red lava visible from Tagulandang. The rain of volcanic stones ceased too. A huge cloud of smoke is still exiting from the crater. Locals fled to the mountains and spent the night there. There's no news of deaths. All members of my family are safe. Thanks for your support.

The lava flows and fountaining are the most beautiful display of the power of nature that you will ever see but once you hear and feel the rumbling sounds youll get goose bumps and that terrifying feeling that you wanna get outta there as soon as possible, nothing made me feel that small and powerless in my whole life 😅😅😅

Amazing, but terrifying- those words and their synonyms are all appropriate for the eruption's description. I cannot believe its lava fountains have reached 2-3 kilometers high. Ruang's recent eruption is the definition of going from 0 to 21,000 (The latter number is the eruption column's height). With the eruption column and lava fountains, this actually resembles some of the post 1631-1944 eruptive activity of Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna. Despite the difference in size, it also reminds me of some descriptions of the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, with how tongues of fire were getting expelled by the volcano (Hot pumice? Please correct me!) With how the volcano looks like, it is very easy to see why Mount Tambora was described to have turned into molten lava during its infamous 1815 eruption. I wonder how supereruptions like those of La Garita, Wah Wah Springs, Toba, the controversial ones in the Parana and Etendaka traps, Yellowstone, Mount Aso, La Pacana, etc. would have looked like at their peaks.

Would you please explain to those that still don't understand, how super-heated water is a driving force behind subduction volcanoes.
@user-lh5fp7bf2c
@user-lh5fp7bf2c Месяц назад
Initially sea water trapped in ocean sediment and rocks get pulled under and smashed by the continental crust where the volcanoes are. As the ocean crust along w all the very wet sediment goes deeper and deeper the pressure and heat increases and forces the rocks w all that water to change and morph and importantly release water vapor upward into the lower crust miles beneath the volcanoes and into the even deeper mushy play dough like rock called upper mantle. The upper mantle is uniformly very dry especially compared to the very wet oceanic crust being subducted, which aids in the transfer of the water sweating off and being drawn into the upper mantle rock above. As the mantle absorbs more water the melting temperature of certain minerals and rocks changes as the rocks start to change slightly. Once enough water and melted sediments accumulate then basalt start to form and pool into vast reservoirs of very hot magma. As the magma accumulates it gets hotter and becomes less dense than the rock that surround it and so it starts to snake its way upward over thousands of years. As it rises the pressure slowly lowers and gas starts to accumulate in the melted magma. The more gas that forms the more it wants to rise as its density continues to lower. And so more gas forms and along its journey upward other past volcanic hardened magma gets re melted and creates more gasses and creates slightly different magma that mix. This happens for thousands of years and creates many little reservoirs of slightly different magmas at different depth under the volcanoes until a large region gets over saturated and has the gas pressure skyrocket. That breaks rocks and causes earthquakes as the gas and magma rise into the middle and eventually upper crust directly below volcanoes. Once the magma reaches a zone where water (ground water) can occur the magma flashes it to steam and that breaks rocks causing earthquakes and aids in the upward movement of the fresh magma. Along its journey upward the magma encounters many different areas of older and newer magmas and can cause the overall magma to become more gas rich or less and overall can mean it assends faster or slower. Eventually the magma explosively assends and destroys the rock surrounding it. Most of the magmas gases escapes and expand and explodes making the magma want to assend even faster breaking more rock and breaking the magma itself causing a chain reaction until it all vents violently through and above the volcano. The air compared to the hot gas and now lava is far far colder so as this column of ash gas and rock rises it pulls in fresh air and heats it pushing everything upward high into the atmosphere. Eventually the ash and gas particles cool enough to where they start to stop rising and stops pulling in fresh air causing it to fall towards the ground. The more magma and gas erupted the higher this happens and further the ash gets rained out. Sometimes this process occurs but there's a very large amount of ground water or sea water that is very close to the exit point of the eruption. When that happens the near supersonic speed of the 1000 degree magma explosively heats the water so fast the pressure builds up faster than it can be released until the whole water area/zone explodes violently along with the even more energetic eruption of magma and gas. Because of that water can aid in the explosivity of volcanic eruptions. This happens almost always at arc volcanoes some far more than others. It can be very dangerous. Water at volcanoes becomes likely steam explosions eventually, sometimes the water only explodes because the magma below stops just short of erupting and only heats the ground water violently until a runaway steam blast happens. Those are very difficult to predict or warn for because it's occurring only a few hundred or thousand ft under the surface.

@vernowen2083 - In addition to @user-lh5fp7bf2c 's detailed explanation, the "NOVA" episode "Hidden Volcano Abyss: Behind Tonga's Massive Eruption" has illustrations that visually explain the mechanics of the eruption. It is available right now for free on the "NOVA" RU-vid channel. There is also a lot of footage from the island as the ash, rock, and tsunami assaulted it; the aftermath; and the scientific analysis of the event. (Two tsunamis hit the island.) --------------- Because people acted quickly and helped each other, deaths were limited to three Tongans. It could have been much worse. ---------------- Scientists also examined Tofua, a volcanic twin on another island that's not too far distant, and discovered that it is not as benign as they thought.
