As we can see, the one with the hammer has a slight advantage. One wrong hit to the beak and these buzzards will be gasping for air. Alas, the lighter colored one moves on, in search for a new nesting ground, or perhaps even a mate. This new world away from home has many tantalizing discoveries to be made.

Yeah. They are far far away from earth and their respective goverments wouldn'y care. USA would be pissed that they lost equipment, USSR has more people to throw.
You have to keep in mind that.. You move really slow in space and on the moon. Sure yeah the hammer can break it if you try hard enough, but gaining momentum is difficult and can probably be pretty easily blocked/defended against as hammers depend on gravity and momentum to do any real damage
@@kostadim7892 The only role that gravity plays in how hard you hit something is keeping you on the ground hard enough for you to have a good grip and stance. Momentum is just mass and velocity. Gravity is not a factor, your physics is a little inaccurate

As mentioned in other comments, this show takes place in an alternate timeline where the the scientific goals and goodwill are basically completely sidelined in favour of military goals, resulting in military bases and cold war style spying and other actions taking place on the moon. In this scene specifically, the soviet cosmonaut is caught spying on the US mining operation inside of the crater, resulting in the standoff

Maybe the space between "That's one small step for man" & "one giant leap for mankind" was Neil parking a growler in his suit. When they got back and all the footage from the LEV was them running around like an over excited kid on Christmas morning they knew there would be questions "Maybe we just say that the uh, gravity is lower on the moon and they need to walk funny" suggested Gene Krantz. Why do you think we never went back? They dread the day a civilian mission goes, because whoever they send will owe the investors the truth. Anyway this show looks awesome. Adding it to my list
I liked the waddle, it was some nice attention to realistic detail. Those suits are famous for their poor range of motion, the moon mission had to include long grabber tools because it was impossible to bend at the waist and pick something up off of the ground. They're basically pressurized balloon suits, just bending an arm takes a lot of effort because the internal pressure resists any kind of bending motion that decreases the overall volume of the suit, increasing the pressure.
There was huge respect between the astronauts and cosmonauts. They probably would have shook hands. There was a huge outpouring of sympathy from the Cosmonaut community when the Apollo 1 tragedy occured and likewise when Yuri Gagarin passed in a training flight by US Astronauts. These guys did not view each other as enemies but respected competitors.
That's right on our real history, but this show addresses an alternate history, in which Russia put the first man on the moon. In the series, the russians began to spy on US operations in a moon crater, and the US astronauts discovered this. In the scene above the astronaut caught the cosmonaut red handed using a machine that led to a US mining operation, the cosmonaut was not just passing by, he was spying, that's the reason for the standoff.

Just like how species of animals will change depending on the location of the world they are in order to adapt, the human race did as well. Religion was needed to keep the tribes in line, to have the rules set in order for everyone do their part for the greater good without causing trouble. Look at the ten commandments, and think about it. Breaking those would rock the boat in the community and not advance the tribe. And since same sex couples wouldn't produce children, they wouldn't advance the tribe. That's it. It's just the dark side of human nature that people took those differences and rules for themselves.
I don't think soviet astronaut would act like this. Despite strained relationship between USA and USSR all of the people were just... people. Against thought that soviet are all "agressive bears", all of the soviet and american astronauts were for internationality of space. And at least this situation must have ended with a handshake. Because all the countries and malice are being left on Earth. On the Moon there are no nationalities and prejudices. I always liked the small details in this scene. The way the Cosmonaut gingerly pulls out the only thing even _close_ to a weapon he has, but doesn't raise it or take a defensive stance. He simply stares the Astronaut down as if to say, "I don't want any trouble, but I WILL fight if I need to." The two simply regard each other for a moment; no hostility between them, but a definitely palpable tension as both try to consider what to do. No arrogance, no posturing, just two men of their respective countries waiting to see how the other side reacts. Finally, the Astronaut gives way, and the Cosmonaut moves on, his somewhat hurried pace showing he doesn't want to stick around.
Doesn’t want trouble, while using I’m guessing US/NASA Equipment. And the moon is essentially American providence. The Soviets secretly send a lunar mission, even landing similar designed module and suited cosmonaut hidden behind lunar surface....
I have a feeling that he was actually quite relaxed, since he had the hammer. I think the ginger pace was just the most comfortable way of moving around a low gravity surface.

Imagine if the American pulled out a gun. But considering how hard it is to move around on the surface of the moon, I imagine an actual fight being two dudes just flopping about like fish out of water, struggling to even stand up straight.
Behind that CCCP astronaut's mask was the sweetest smile ever on the moon as he was overjoyed to find another human being there, the hammer in his grip was shaking because he wanted to drop it so bad and then extend his hand to the fellow astronaut. However, since dropping the hammer and bowing down to pick it up might be a chore on the moon's gravity, he decided to skip away jubilantly, to inform his HQ about such a wonderful moment for humanity.
You joke but I am 100% certain they would have both been amazed and delighted to run into each other on the moon. Tensions on an individual level were not the same as on political level, and especially scientists would have seen each other as being there for the common good over trying to advance national or ideological interests.

There’s a big misunderstanding from this scene that people need to realize. This show is set in a alternate universe where the soviets landed first on the moon. The reason there is tension is because the Cosmonaut was trespassing and taking shit from the American side of the moon. And not just that but the Astronaut had found a camera placed by the Cosmonauts near that area. Just imagine being in both their shoes. You a cosmonaut were caught being in a American mine and you only expect the astronaut to be hostile as they had just destroyed a camera you deliberately placed in the mine. So yes there is definitely gonna be tension.
When has Americans shown Russia in a positive light? Never. This is typical Hollywood BS with the generic Russian bad guy and the American hero who is there to save the day.

Hollywood makes movies for Americans, of course they are going to try and make it entertaining for their target audience. No one wants to see a bunch of movies that makes their country look bad, so most movies don't do that. But there are certainly movies where America isn't the "Hero". Would you rather they use the Chinese instead of the Russians? Because that's about he only other feasible opponent we would have in this hypothetical scenario.

But that doesn't make it bad, it is a work of fiction. Fiction is not real, it does not have to be plausible. And it is surely overdramatized, that is like the whole point of these shows. Not my thing, but some people can't get enough of it. And I already said this, but Hollywood movies and the like are not propaganda. I think you should look that word up means. Movies and TV shows are not even close to accurate sources of information, you cannot use them like they are. Anyone who does is an ignorant fool. Can humans not discern a work of fiction from real life? We should be smarter than that. Let's be real here man. The show isn't objectively bad, you just don't like it. Let's not shit on the people who do, everyone has the right to their own opinion. I think the premise is silly too, but some people don't care or want that. And who are we to judge what they like and don't like? If it makes them happy then who cares, it's not hurting anyone is it? Me and you will stick to stuff grounded in reality, that's our cup of tea. The cosmonauts and the astronauts respected each other tremendously. The fallen cosmonauts were honoured with a plaque left on the moon during Apollo 14 and medallions of uri Gagarin and Vladimir komarov in Apollo 11. NASA also requested to send a representative to komarovs funeral.
I imagine that respect would have vanished if things escalated as they did in this show. Hence the tension they both have. The cosmonaut was using NASA's elevator in here, and trespassing on the US side. It's effectively a military confrontation being shown here.

...He just brought a hammer to a space fight... That's kind of awesome. They get all the way to the moon and they're still using the most primitive kind of weapon to threaten each other. I also loved the mirrored faceplates, turning the other human into a faceless unknowable alien who is simultaneously a reflection of ourselves. What a great metaphor for the entire cold war. Most shows would go with clear face-plates with a lot of dumb LEDs inside of them so you can see the actors emote.

The CGI of the lunar landscape, and painting out all the studio/cameras on the visor reflections, is awesome. The astronauts move really convincingly too. Love this show.
For those who don’t understand the context, in the show US spot this area for the ice and landed several missions and eventually established a base here, with soviet following them landed not far, also for the ice. The US astronaut found out soviet has installed hidden camera inside the US operational space watching them. The lift actually belongs to US with the soviet lift on the other side of the area, so US astronaut actually caught the soviet guy being active in US bade and potentially spying on them, that’s why it got so intense. The soviet astronaut drew out the hammer cuz he knew the American were mad about the hidden camera spied on them and this American astronaut just lost his son on earth while being alone on the moon, so he could act out of his emotion at this point. It has nothing to do with American propaganda and eventually the soviet guy’s drive broke down and had to ask the American base for help. To avoid spoiler I am not gonna day what happened but it is not that biased and really context based.

I noticed a small flaw regarding our astronaut. For the flight to the moon, in the USSR developed the Krechet 94 spacesuit. It was a semi-rigid spacesuit, and its main distinguishing feature was a chest console made in the form of a drop-down tablet. And here, for our cosmonaut, the spacesuit looks more like the Orlan spacesuit, which is now used by astronauts on the ISS orbital station.
In the show the reason the USSR got to the moon first was cause 1 Soviet rocket scientist did not die in surgery during the late 50s I forget his name. So its logical to assume that the space suite in this show was a different design to the krechet 94.

I worked in cinematography and film industry for 4 years, one thing I learned is that practically every shot where two people are not talking to each other, has a lot of meaning to it. Please take the time to notice something other than spaceships, it probably wasn’t what the writer was trying to convey.
Yea this wouldn't have happened I think most soviet citizens were ok with westerners. I mean they are both momentous people on the moon and they would probably enjoy the company knowing they aren't alone.

To be fair it was at the peak of the Cold War and propaganda of the other side being very aggressive was high. I would be scared alone seeing another person on the moon. Especially if it was a enemy made to seem very hateful

[Spoilers ahead] A lot of people who haven’t watched the show don’t realise the context of the scene. There are a lot of comments saying “this is unrealistic, they would have been bro’s and said hello” It isn’t a random confrontation, the cosmonaut is in American territory and he was tampering with mining operations and setting up cameras to spy on them. That’s why they aren’t all chill and waving at each other. The cosmonaut was on a covert mission to spy for the Soviet Union. Just an important point, please watch the show to understand fully. This was a very tense stand-off, not a friendly meet-up.
Even with zero context I would find it highly suspicious that the cosmonaut just happened to know where the Americans are becuse the moon is so huge it's not a coincidence they'd pick their landing sites so close. I'd already suspect espionage at play.
I love how they used the sun visors as such an effective way to build tension. Because you can’t see the persons face on the other end it falls in that uncanny valley even though you know there should be a person in there... or is there. The fear of the unknown is such an effective tool in this, and this utilizes it in multiple different ways. Bravo
Plus the fact that you can't see the other person's face. Is that cosmonaut wearing the hesitant look of a man who doesn't want to have to use his makeshift weapon - or the hard mask of one who won't hesitate to? Also, just want to point out how good the sound design is. None of the movements make any noise, and the minimal music works extremely well.

Could you imagine? Spending easily a quarter of your life dedicated to learning astrophysics and all other disciplines to become a candidate to go into space, let alone land on the Moon. Only to throw that all away when you confront a cosmonaut who had spent just as much of their life to be there, too, because of politics on a planet you aren't even on anymore. ... so yes, it *would* be fucked up if a dude killed another dude with a rock on the moon.
Well, the context is very different in this case, so I would say it is reasonable for the US astronaut be getting intense since the Soviet Union secretly installed spy camera in US Base and actually got caught this time
