It's not hard man. Once you know how to range targets, know your rifle, know your optic, and know certain formulas, it's cake. Just like Lunker said, I never dialed for anything out to 1000m. I did a little different than what he did though. I get my zero in the right center of the crosshairs and then bring my zero all the way up to the bottom of the top duplex which gives me 10 mildots to work with. Then from the center of my cross hairs I measure the target and have a magic number that coincides with my gun/scope with it's muzzle velocity. When I get the measurement, I subtract that reading from the magic number and that tells me what mildot to hold on the target. Then adjust for wind. I'm sure that made no sense right now, but if you get into long range shooting it will lol
@hawks2252
@hawks2252 3 года назад
I am not a long range shooter, more of a shotgun trap shooter, but from the guys I talk with good optics is a big part. Before putting down some serious money start your research on the type of optics you prefer (as well as caliber, rifle make, etc.). Talk with long range shooters, they are usually more than happy to discuss it.

Let’s go back to basics. Start with a solid zero at 100 yards off a solid rest (tripod and bag). Actually set your turret to 0 at 100 yards. Use a good chronograph to work out your bullet velocity. Find your exact Ballistic coefficient using your bullet manufacturers data. Input this data into a ballistic app along with other necessary information such as altitude, scope height, what your scope is (moa or mills) etc. Get the exact range with a rangefinder. Insert the range into your ballistic app. Adjust to the number your app tells you to, for example 19Moa for 1000 yards. Shoot 3 well aimed shots into a big enough target so they all hit and then review where they strike. If they all strike low or high then fine tune your velocity or bc on the app to match where they are hitting. Confirm with another 3+ shots, keep fine tuning until you have achieved accurate results. Long range shooting is not a complicated thing. Provided your rifle is set up right and posting sub Moa groups at 100 yds wind should be your major variable.

People need to understand that "sniping" of today is vastly different than the 60's through 90's. Today's sniper in theater in Iraq or Afghanistan uses the 1 shot and a good correction approach. The mission is different compared to what people like Chuck Mawhinney did in Vietnam. For those not in the know, Chuck had more confirmed kills than Carlos did. He was trained by him. Carlos however had more glamorous kills. Regardless, the mission was different. Then, you had to know and understand "cold bore zero" as that first shot would likely be the one that counts whereas your second, third, fourth "might" be vastly different. Military snipers are "area shooters" shooting 12 inches wide by 19 inches tall. Between the shoulders and neck to belt. This man "Rob" is shooting as he was trained to do so. One shot and a good correction. There is nothing wrong with that. It does not mean that he isn't a marksman or a sniper.
@jamesnorth7318

@@jamesnorth7318 Yes, Carlos was the "white feather" guy. He was tasked with creating the scout sniper training course for the Marines. He later started his own school where he frequently had both military and SWAT snipers. The biggest difference, as I said was that military is an area shooter (12x19). A SWAT is a precision sniper. Without too much detail, Military snipers in the 80's and 90's were often utilized by other organizations to provide intelligence and, if necessary, eliminate a target. Unlike actions carried out in desert environments where you "might" get a shot with good correction due to lack of cover for the target, these shots "could" be carried out in jungle or other locations (house, car, hacienda) where 1 is all you get. A cold bore zero is the first shot from a rifle where the barrel is ambient temperature. This shot might be off by .5 inches compared to the next 3 out of a warm bore. NOT a huge deal at 100 yards, but that .5 is huge when speaking of precision, 1 shot situations out at 800 yards. So, you basically take a barrel temp reading then fire 1 shot. You then fire three additional. You get your cold bore difference. Your dope corrections are made and then you wait for the barrel to cool before you shoot again to ensure 100% cold bore accuracy. Now, you know that 1st shot that you waited 3 days to make will be on spot. If however you need to engage multiple targets, you will either hold off your cold bore dope or re dial your scope. Some guys dope their scope for warm bore but hold off on cold. I find it harder to do to make that 1st one count. Hope this helps

The biggest difference is that military snipers of today are utilized much differently than previously. In Vietnam as an example, they went out to cause havoc, impose fear, and surgically take out targets. Similar to what you think of in the movies. No different then getting attached to a three letter organization. Today, in the theaters they operate in, many are used as cover and overwatch of troop movement. Example, you might have a platoon that is going to run an operation in or around a village. You might insert a sniper team to cover the entry or extraction of this unit. Hard to do in a jungle, easy in a rice paddy

Not to mention the difference between the two separate theaters of Vietnam or Iraq and Afghanistan. The distance for snipers in that era was a bit closer than snipers shoot today. With Vietnam your in a more wooded area where your targets can be in a 400-600 meter distance, as for Iraq and primarily Afghanistan depending on where your engagement is happening could be anywhere from 300-1500 meters. And the technology difference in scopes today as compared to scopes in the 60's is vastly different.

Maybe you should have calmed down a little before making the video. You could see your frustration in your movements and how you spoke. You’re using a MOA reticle by the way, not MILS. Your math is way off, especially when trying to speak on the 1.5 MIL vs 2 MOA comparison. About 10” off, that’s a lot more than 1/2”.

@@veracitysolutionsllc or... now hear me out. Maybe he got confused with his terminology, it happens to the best of us and it can be embarrassing, I Really hope you wont judge based on that. Being a public figure can be daunting, we can't be on point all the time.. With that being said I would like to address what is really the most concerning issue... The prices of ammo. I was in line, an hour before opening, I.D. in hand ready for my mandatory $1 California "Background check" (Impeding the 2nd amendment) Only to be told that all they had left were hollow points and other home defense rounds. The owner and I joked about prices and he had informed me that prices due to demand and tax were up 300%!!! to put it into context, the cheapest they had was $60 for 50 rnds. Now I am a determined person and I could not let this treason continue! So I did what any good American would do, I started at the bottom with my Local government. Luckily Tito Ortiz is running for city council of Huntington Beach, CA. I'm not kidding that's happening. Then continue up the ladder voting for anyone that has my interest in mind. Because that's how its done, you don't just vote for one person thinking they'll save humanity, grow up, this ain't a fairy tale. No one lives together in harmony for eternity. Cool, now that I'm done rambling, I may or may not have went on a tangent just to gain your audience. My bad..Lunkers is cool, you suck (kiss face)
