At the time it seemed unconscionable that he didn't go all out, but as I get older and know what we now know about what football does to the brain...Hard to be mad at him.
To be honest, that is a bit of a hospital ball. Floating pass deep across the middle in front of a safety breaking on the ball. This was before “defenseless receiver” calls. Plays like that literally landed guys on a stretcher and on their way to the hospital.
@@vincentlyckowski9228How could you not? If this game had been shown on TV, Watters would have gotten destroyed by fans, much worse. This game wasn’t sold out though.
Man, Cunningham was trying to get him lit up. Look at how that ball was coming out. He was trying to save the rest of his life, not his career. This was when helmet to helmet counted.
Aww. Should shed some light on the modern RB conundrum we’re in. Owners have seen it time and time again when big money goes to RBs then suddenly there’s games where “they don’t have it today.” NFL doesn’t wanna pay big bread for that. I don’t blame Watters tho lol. Except the fact they were losing was largely on him. So not wanting to get blown up bc ya think you’re losing is kinda a punk move
One bad moment doesn’t negate an amazing career , very few were as good as Ricky watters was . He was a true 3 down stud that could do It all . Idk y he ever went to Philly
I remember it like yesterday - he left the niners because in his heart of hearts, he wanted to be THE MAN. By leaving the niners, no one was there to be accountable to him who would yell at him like Steve Young, Jerry Rice, and other established players from the niners . Great player, but really needed the environment to succeed and he gave it all up. As a result, both he and the Niners were worse off. I did enjoyed watching him and his passion. Wish he'd stayed a Niner (good chance we get another championship in 95-96) but still - a great Niner, and will remember him fondly .
I agree although He had a much better rushing career after he left San Francisco. Dude was a savage but had a bad bad day. He should have stayed a 9er.
The 49ers didn't even try to keep him. They barely made a lowball offer, then let him walk. Watters had balled out and earned way more respect than that. One of the biggest mistakes the franchise ever made. It took them 28 YEARS to find another RB as good as Watters.
3:24 Now folks…let us not be too hard on Ricky here. I do believe that #47 barreling towards him was one John Lynch. I mean….can we really blame him? Todays game (with the rules against defenders being what they are) I can understand. But shit, that was John Lynch 🤷🏾♂️
Charlie Garner was very very popular back then and eventually the city warmed up to Watters and he became one of the premier backs in the league....this was one of the last games blacked out (which is unheard of nowadays in Philly) the Kotite era almost destroyed the fanbase....also Eagles fans haven't been that hard on one of their own players pretty much since then with the exception to a lesser degree of Nelson Algohlar, Vince Young, Namdi Assamough, and Donovan McNabb
this is such a fascinating old football artifact: mike breen calling an nfl game. first nfl game for warren sapp and derrick brooks. randall’s last year in philly. sam wyche as bucs coach. damn.
No one has ever scored more tds in a Super Bowl than Watters (3, several other guys have three--Rice (two different SBs), Terrel Davis, Roger Craig, and James White. White has the most points in an SB with 20 (he scored a 2-point conversion). He also had a record 14 receptions and scored the game-winning TD (all against Atlanta). I wanted he and Brady to share the MVP that year.
He gets such a bad rap for this. He played some tough seasons for Philly and he’s known for 1 play where he decides not to get his head knocked off on a meaningless play.
It is the embodiment of his entire career and attitude. Big flashy plays and this and fumbles and fights and ejections. You want to only remember the flashy plays and forget the rest.
3:19 is the first play where he let up so he wouldnt get hit by the SS. This led to the 2nd play right afterwards which got the "For Who For What" quote. Can't blame the guy either 😂. Not tryin to get knocked the Fuck out
This was his ‘No Mas’ moment. It was too bad because he had a great career. He was similar to Marshall Faulk and brought talent and enthusiasm to a team. Too bad he is remember more for than this his 5 TDs against the Giants in the The playoffs and his tremendous performance in the SB.
I lived in South Jersey at the time. The Philly News kept playing what he said over and over again. It's ashame because he had a good career in Philly. However, that stupid thing he said left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
Nah, fans are just overzealous. And don’t give me the “spend hard earned money to see you, and they get paid millions” crap. Knowing what we know now, Cunningham would’ve gotten the bad rep for throwing a hospital pass.
@Fries Jim Marshall isn't in the Hall of Fame because he ran the wrong way. He was part of the Purple People Eaters and and All Pro. Would you say it is fair to keep him out?
Yeah im sure its the fans who lose the games, not the players/coaches/owners smh. What a dumb ass comment. Philly fans like when players give it their ALL.. Thats why people like Brian Dawkins and Nick Foles are forever cemented in Philly history. Never have to pay for another drink or meal in that city for life.. Alligator arms is a bitch move.. And by the way, the superbowl name changed happened in the late 60s. Eagles won championships in the 60s
The fact is that Watters was obviously very talented. However, the fact remains that he and others like him were already started a downward trend. They wanted to get paid big bucks and make big plays, but wouldn’t take big hits. The rules also began to make things more sissified and finesse and turned out a different product than was in place for the first 70 or so years of the league
2:40 this is why no one wants to play for the Eagles nor cries for philly not winning. No loyalty. So pessimistic they can’t even wait till the end of the game to boo their own players. They’ll turn on anyone for anything in a second
