I have felt guilty for stopping dramas that others said were amazing/10 stars, and I wanted to understand the hype, but when I watched it just depressed me or disturbed me to the point I had to stop. I’m trying to move a way from the DNF guilt 😅.

oh, thanks for the warning! I think I would have attempted to watch it for 白宇...but it sounds extremely depressing! Especially the family pressure stuff 😭

Saw a few clips of this drama and was thoroughly disgusted with these characters. They all seem to be on the extreme end of things. Either they are wishy washy and spineless or independent to the point of selfishness, even to their loved ones. The family dynamic is so messed up - both nuclear and extended. I found myself not caring what happened to any of them and just hoped they didn’t bring others crashing down during their swan dive.

I feel sorry for the male lead Bai Yu choosing to participate in this project and some others. He is a decent actor with characters and I just hope that he is more selective in what kind of roles, stories and production team to work with.

Based on ur review, it has similar concept with k-drama; Liver or Die(whats wrong, poong-sang); where ML bears almost every trouble happen in the family.

I agree with your reviews. When this drama initially came out, I think I clicked on the first episode and backed out because of the dissonance in landscape. It probably doesn’t matter that much to international audience, but as someone who came from Taiyuan, the high dense skyscrapers/apartments were definitely not sight you’ll see in Taiyuan a few decade ago, still not as common these days. The scenes paired with MaYili’s over the top acting just created so much conflict that I couldn’t continue watching. It was as if every character and background was aware that they’re in a story, that they’re fake, making the entire storyline very unbelievable/unreal

I was surprised at the beginning of review when you said you dropped this drama but the rating is 1.5 goldmine but I get it towards the end. Makes a lot of sense. Life is already challenging enough.

I have dropped this after episode 1 even though I like the three main leads and it’s obvious that this is a quality production. I could have guessed where the story goes after first half hour, and I think I would have problem with the eventual ending. Spoiler: the guy has no blood relation with either of his cousins.

Thanks for your candid review. I would still consider watching this because I really admire Bai Yu as an actor. He was excellent in the family drama "The Bond." He played the oldest sibling trying to aid his siblings to grow up despite their negligent father. I do see your point about viewers not wanting an overwhelmingly grim, depressing drama. Both "Echo" and "Thirteen Years of Dust" aren't cheerful, despite the former having a contrived happy ending to the leads' marital woes.

Currently watching the long season which sometimes is quite confusing bec it keeps on jumping from present to past (2 different periods in the past) to present without any text helps, so sometimes, I have a hard time figuring out if a scene is in the present or in the past, plus which of the 2 pasts is being shown. Long Season seems more depressing than even Take Us Home.

Can you review "the bond"? I think it's one of the very few dramas I've watched recently which I've finished fully and cried after finishing it..BY is the ml there

Agreeing on the depressing and pointlessness of that one. Despite my bias for Bai Yu, the martyr stance of Xi Jue, plus the wig of Ma, the brat, the hussy, and the wimp older teacher, the predictability of many "shocks", the bicycling to work in... Chongqing ??!!! (Yes, I know the terrain there.) If crew wanted an industrial and polluted setting it would have been better to keep the original novel setting, or find a suitably depressed Dongbei locale, even though Tiexi Shenyang is perhaps not as drab today as it was in the legendary Wang Bing movie. The gold mine is very generous. To me that one is squarely land mine quality (pun intended). So, same, dropped it, earlier than ep15, and don't think I'll ever click to find out if it could redeem itself in my view: I'll prefer to forget the time I spent on it. By contrast, I was vastly happy about the somewhat predictable story, but sizzling chemistry of actors and excellent OST of Provoke short episode drama (justly also praised by AvX), which I mostly watched on WeTV (VIP) and tried to re-watch in the "movie" compilation edition in 2 parts (I only saw part I, 3h long, since part II has yet to be released, but I do not recommend that, because of the tinny sound and blasting music that deafens dialogues on the RU-vid post). It made me more tolerant of The Last Princess, nails and all, which also has a very pleasing OST. Plus, although the real historical figure of Zhang Xueliang was never mentioned (and that person never married a princess, nor had all those adventures in Fengtian, Zhili, Changbai mountains and Beijing Xicheng), it made me review some History and geography, places to put on my still to be visited list. As for the drama, I consumed it like I did, gleefully, the latest movie version of The Three Musketeers, d'Artagnan. Pure escapism.

I don't know if I like this genre of domestic problematic life dramas or not, as I have dropped many such dramas after 1-2 episodes like modern marriage, life is long quiet river or story of xingfu; but quite easily watched the bond, nothing but thirty and this one (take us home). Watched 28 episodes till now and will watch till the end if not what this drama is hinting towards really happens. Then it would be a disaster. I like the dynamics between the siblings. They don't always support others decision and often does things behind their back which might offend them, but in times of crisis they depend on each other more than their respective partners. I also like how the 3 cousins have complete different outlook on life despite being brought up together by the 3rd uncle. As AvenueX said, Xijue is made the sacrificial lamb, I feel he treats himself as such more than the others think of him. As the story progresses, I can understand why... May be he thinks, its better to hurt himself than getting hurt by other (i.e., he sacrifices before he is asked to do), the pain would be lesser that way.. who knows.. its not explained... There are a lot of things that I don't understand. Mainly the time line in the drama. (SPOILERS) 1. drama starts in 2005. xijue is already teaching senior classes yet he is only 23-24 years and just graduated. How? 2. xuibi is born in 1999. story is currently in 2012. Yet from 2005 to 2012, they cast same actor to play a 6 year and 13 years old!!! 3. In one episode DiongNi says her birth year is '79. One need to be 21 to get married. Yet she marries in '99 when she is 20. Also given the dynamics of the cousins how is it possible that no one knows about this situation except her parents???

i was still going to watch it until i heard the "family jesus" part. this trope is sooo annoying for me, a definite dealbreaker :/

take us home script has plenty of coincidences which are found only in dramas to generate melodrama, so the script is less believable. I have watched some videos of chongqing and they do mention you get plenty of exercise walking up and down in chongqing bec it is in a hilly and mountainous area.

ML is a bit like a child who chooses to stay home to take care of a sick parent, even if that parent is cruel to him. The loyalty of this young man may seem absurd, but such people really do exist. Sometimes you just can't cut yourself off from a toxic family, because you know they can't cope without you, and if you leave and they have problems, you'll blame yourself. I don't know if these people are like that by nature or if they were taught that in childhood. They really can't leave and family predators will naturally take advantage of this.

I stopped watching this increasingly annoying drama around the same time as Avenue X. 😢Eldest girl cousin only has one expression: a scowl. Her demeanor as this kick ass character did not change although she became a mom. Bai Yu needs to pick better dramas…this self sacrificing, “I can take the second best character” of his with an older gf who looks more like his mom…. I just can’t watch anymore…..
