Forcing Paper Whites, a How-to Video with Glenwood Weber 

Very often the leaves will sprint while the roots have not yet developed.... that's a problem because the flowers won't get enough water. It helps to put the bulbs on the gravel w / water, then place the whole thing in a cool / cold garage (Chicago here). Place a big paper bag over it all. The darkness and cold gets the roots growing BEFORE the leaves and flowers. About 3 to 6 weeks later, take out of the garage and into the house. No special light needed. The ambient light in the house and the warmth of indoors is all they need. Tip: Grow in a Hurricane vase to prevent flopping of leaves and stems.

Thank you for great video, my first time with these. Very good info packed with what we need to know! Esp putting outside to naturalize, most others say put them in compost & buy more, what a waste that would be.

I'm surprised you didn't mention or address the fact that often the stalks get so tall that they flop over...and then what might be some functional yet attractive ways to keep the stalks upright?

Hello Michael, this is a very professional video. I have a couple of questions... I live in Northern California, & we are having a very long spring [it seems]. Plenty of rain w/ cool days & evenings. I planted my Narcissus a month ago. I'm new to this, & I think it's too late for them to bloom - or is it? Once they rooted I replanted them outside in a container with loose soil & compost. The roots were long & healthy. Do you think that I ruined the bulbs? And do you think I will get any flowers? I appreciate any advice or if you could answer my questions. Once the bulbs are planted & watered where do you put them? Do they need to go somewhere before they bloom. Do they need dark/light/cool/heat? Good to know they can be planted in the garden afterwards.

An you plant the bulbs outside if it’s really cold,,,,should I plant them in dirt inside if it’s snowing outside?

Do you have a video for the spent bulbs? Do you let them dry off, or plant them outdoors immediately after removing from their indoor pot?
