Forclaz MT900 down jacket (-18C) - Misleading marketing, but a decent product at a decent price

The Forclaz MT900 is advertised for use up to -18°C, but in reality doesn't prove up to a challenge anywhere near that. However, it's still a good multifunction down jacket at a good price point. For many occasional users, or users in anything but really cold environments, this jacket can certainly be a good choice.

Actual, real world, useful review 👏 Thank you so much!! Really liked the fact that you were able to relate the review to real world experiences, so you can gauge whether this is the right jacket for you.

I love to see that someone takes Decathlon products seriously, not just based on the brand perception. Plain and simple, keep telling it like it is!

i think the temperature rating really depends on the humidity outside. I live in Mongolia and use it when it's warm. By warm i mean anything below - 22C. Stopping for a few minutes at a traffic light is no issue, and walking around is heaven. No overheating or freezing. When it gets cooler it's also ok, however length becomes its downfall. It doesn't go low enough to keep you warm at the really low temps. For cooler tempos i have some Fjällraven Parka's. Though, those can be too hot. In the end, real leather like sheep is best. Always comfortable, no overheating. Depending on the leather on the outside, being active, like snow shoeing is no issue.

I have this jacket for more than a year and it is great. This jacket is too warm for summer months in south Alps, I use Trek 100 for that. There is a video of Justin using this jacket in Canada at -18 degrees Celsius with no problem. If you buy it, you won't regret it, trust me.

Using it how? While being active or being static? I'm not saying it's a bad jacket. But it certainly has its limitations and in my opinion the way they advertise it is misleading. Not doing them nor potential buyers any favors

Yeah totally agree. I have this and also their ultralight down jacket. This is way way too warm for -5c being active for me and I'm ultra thin. I wore their ultralight one at -10 on Duforspitze this year and -9 on Jungfrau no issues.

Great start and quality content, but so much is missing from this video. No shot if you wearing it. People WANT to see what jackets look like! Down quality and fill power… The outer fabric D, and overall product weight. Honestly I really love your presentation, and of course top notch production quality. Just make sure to add a bit more of the details of the product you’re reviewing in the next one 😊

I had the same question in my mind but my guess is that he did not buy it. The fact that he is NOT reviewing a wide variety of products might well be because he is buying the stuff he is talking about with his own money, which makes his comments relevant.

I would love to know your advise on static warm layer jackets to actually consider rather than what jacket to avoid. You seem very knowledgeable and I'd appreciate the advice! Unfortunately I cannot make a decision simply based on what NOT to do :). thanks again.
@DieterVanHolder
@DieterVanHolder 8 месяцев назад
A way towards an ideal situation would be higher quality construction with less points to let heat escape in combination with a denser, higher quality down filling. Unfortunately that usually means easily double the price and upward. Everything is a compromise.

Hey, Dieter! What's your opinion on that Patagonia Nano Air hoody you're sporting? How does it compare to a light weight fleece + a windhsell, like for example the Black Diamond Alpine Start Hoody? I've been wondering if I should invest in a "active insulation" piece. It's just that they're so expensive. I'd use it for short treks in the Ardennes in autumn and winter and "berghuttentochten" in summer. Sorry for posting off topic. 😅

I just purchased this jacket a few moments ago and then found your video! I will only be using it hiking/backpacking/general purpose down to about 10F (-12C) or so. Maybe as low as 0F (-18C) but that's very unlikely. I live in an area that doesn't get much colder than that but there is always relatively high humidity. What do you think about this? Of course this would be my "top" layer in these conditions (maybe with a light rain jacket if needed) while using a merino wool base layer. I like that it's packable, affordable, and has armpit vents. I would really like to hear your opinion about how you think it'll perform and any possible better options for around the same price.

Will this hold up in Tromso, Norway in March end? Max temp -3 degree Celsius & minimum temp -14 degree Celsius. We will be outdoor at night chasing the northern lights. Or should I go for the quechua -20 degrees parkha instead (that one is bulky though: 1.5 kg)

[Useful information of this comment is in english, but I'l greet the man from Chile first] Wena felix soy de Chile tmb :B te recomendaría que tengas cuidado con las cosas de pluma en valdivia, ya que al mojarse o estar en ambientes húmedos pierden mucha de su capacidad aislante. I burrowed from a friend a very thick down parka for a -1°C trip, which shoulda been nothing for the parka. But the conditions were so wet and humid that I was freezing, and my sister was ok with 2 fleeces and a regular windbreaker. Valdivia is extremely wet and humid, so I'll give you the hint to look for "sintethic down" materials. *Decathlon has this trek 100 sinthetic down thin lightwright jacket for just 35.000clp* (~35 usd) and i use it down to 6°C just with a tshirt underneath, so I would really recommend that with some layering. It works even when wet. Saludos!

Not sure how it was in the past or how it is/was out of Germany but on the website it says -18 active. I'd love some tips on gear for static use. Hmm, yes would be nice to know what kind of "active" they mean. Afaik the Down Fillweight is alot, but I guess like you said (kind of) somewhere that the problem is whathow the jacket is made/spacing/thickness between the down pockets or how its called @@DieterVanHolder
