Ford 3.0 Liter air conditioner fix, for the Ford models: Freestyle, 500( Five Hundred) and Mercury Montego.
This fix is for the Ford's and Mercury's who's AC's work at low speeds or when the temperate outside is fairly cool but will not work in hot weather or stop and go driving. A new compressor for these cars are about $800.00 this fix is anywhere from $30.00 to $200.00, all depending on whether or not you have access to evacuate and recharge your refrigerant.

I did this a couple years ago on my 2006 Ford five hundred. First I went to an ac repair shop, they told me the whole system needed replaced. My compressor, dryer, the whole works, total estimate $1600! I researched on line, found where people said try the scroll valve and I ordered it on line. I don't remember the place, it was around $30. I had a mechanic evacuate the system, install the scroll valve, recharge my ac. My total was around $60. So, all together, less than $100. The ac works great. I'd be willing to bet the ac shop new this, their specialists, but were going to perform ridiculous expensive, unnecessary repairs. Thanks, John

I just came here to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! If we didn't have people like you putting this kind of information on the internet people like me would be dishing out thousands! This fixed the problem with my 2006 Ford 500. Bought the piece and had a shop install it for me. $50 to remove the refrigerant, install the part and refill refrigerant. It works! You've saved me $$$. Thanks!

Yes, and good luck getting the valve out. If it’s froze up in there I know because after I recovered the system pull the plate the valve is froze up will not move so I’m a get a ride angle drill put a screw in it, pull it out, put a new one in and reverse the spring

Girl.... THANK YOU SO MUCH. The pressure on the low end of my Ford 500 was pegged in the red. I thought maybe it was overcharged so I brought it down to about 55. Still blowing warm. So I evacuated the system again but for the life of me I couldn't locate the plate. Was looking in the wrong places. After seeing your video I found it in 3 seconds!!! Gonna try this tomorrow. While I was evacuating it.... it was refrigerant at first but most of the pressure seemed like regular air. Anyway, I'm gonna pop it off tomorrow.... the engine is TOO HOT now.... and give this a try. GOOD LOOKING OUT GIRL!! Thoughts or advice? I'm gonna clean the valve and port and put it back as it's designed. If that doesn't work I'll reverse the spring to the back and try that. I just want to make sure the compressor ISN'T bad. I have plenty of refrigerant. Thanks a MILLION!!

I removed my old valve and replaced with a new one, and the car is only blowing real cold when the engine is around 2500 rpm, and not at idle. I am wondering if the new valve is not working properly. Is there some kind of 'bench test' for this valve? Also, the old valve had a substance on it that was 'blackish' and a bit tacky. Should I have wiped out the valve port on the compressor, or oiled the new valve? What would that substance be, and does it affect the valve, or the compressor's functioning?

And it doesn’t hurt the ozone layer it clearly states rate on the website I’ve been to seminars it’s all a money Demic from the government and if you want to do it real cheap you can’t find a part and they want to just say you compressor evacuate the system or have somebody do it take the valve out and the spring and reverse the spring it won’t hurt a system. It’ll desperate at full volume if your system develops head pressure problems or low, your high pressure switch will kick out still, you’ll save $50-$30 if you got the equipment to recover the system I was researching to find another way around this either clean it or somebody had a trick for and there is take the valve out clean it up takes an emery cloth, lightly or a Scotch-Brite pad, clean it up, reverse your spring. It will work and save you quite a bit of money.

So, I tried reversing the new spring, and valve, but this did not fix my problem. (Putting in the new valve, spring, and filter the correct way, did not fix it either). I still have cold air at high idle (1,500 rpm to 3,500 rpm), but no cold air at idle (800 rpm) or at low rpm (1,000) rpm. My guage set reads from 90 spi to 120 psi on the LOW SIDE, and only 120 psi to 130 psi on the HIGH SIDE (ambient outdoor temp is about 85 degrees, and humidity is about 60%). I am thinking I need a new compressor. Any feedback from you guys here?

Sometimes the scroll valve can gall the cylinder wall, in that case find a piece of aluminum round bar stock can be used in place of the bypass valve. IIRC the cylinder bore is 24-26mm, I replaced the piston assembly with round aluminum bar stock approximately 22-24x14-16mm, the particular piece had a 2-3mm hole through the center of it. When that is done, the compressor no longer runs in variable mode, it runs like a traditional compressor. It has been like that for over 3 years now on my 05 Freestyle. Always blows cold when the AC is engaged. Note: it does affect your MPG.
@meganmechanchick9466
@meganmechanchick9466 7 лет назад
I am glad this worked for you, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though lol. I have a degree in hydraulics and pneumatic and I know those scroll valves are more complicated that just drilling holes. Good creativity tho!!!
@mdwillington9416
@mdwillington9416 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. On of the problems with the valve Sanden uses is that it has a small check valve inside the piston, this usually fails open. The cylinder I have used is plugged, that 2-3mm hole has a screw in it. The modification was actually recommend on a few forums by folks in the HVAC industry. I will admit that it is not a fix for everyone, however, I'm using it on a vehicle ('05 Freestyle) with 200,000 miles on it. These compressors were used in several vehicles outside of Ford, I've seen them in Mazda and in GM products too.
@mdwillington9416
@mdwillington9416 7 лет назад
Not trying to be a PITB here, BTW... Q: By placing the round stock inside and forcing the valve to remain open, what is the worst thing you can expect to happen when it does not close when it's supposed to? A: The a/c low side pressure will go below ~30 and the compressor will cycle off. Pressure will then go up and the compressor will come back on. This is how all a/c units work that do not have a variable displacment compressor. BTW, this is a recommend fix on VW AC scroll compressors. The fix works on all scroll type compressors such as the Sanden and Vision units. The new Sanden units do not contain scroll valves. The scroll valve is meant to vary the effective displacement of the compressor so that if demand is low then the compressor will work less and therefore put less load on the engine, which ostensibly returns better MPG. You can certainly replace the scroll valve as others have done - so long as the inside bore of the compressor is not damaged, this will likely work fine. But the bore is aluminum and the valve is not. Adding the round stock to lock the valve in place turns the compressor back into a non-variable type and relies on the existing pressure sensing valve to cycle the compressor.

So I ordered the part and took it to someone to put on. Not sure if they did it correctly cause they seemed a little confused about it. It worked for about a week then stopped getting cold again. Took it back and was told it didn’t have any Freon so they put more in it. Said they could find a leak anywhere so not sure what happened. After that it didn’t even Last a week. Now not only does it not get cool it won’t even shut off. I can change temperature but I can’t shut it off. Not sure what to do now
