The front grill of this era of Ford is blatently Aston Martin as well. I forgot the exact details, but I think there was some sort of disagreement by the designer or something, and he decided to put the Aston grill on the Fords, since Ford owned AM as well.
@@sh4dowchas3rand also land rover which is pretty cool if you want some rugged nice wheels on your ford. I ran range rover wheels on my focus looked pretty slick.
My dude, for us Aussies, you actually have to try pretty hard to rust up any car here. I live in Sydney and, at worst, I only ever got some surface rust on the lip of a wheel arch on my old car (caused by stone chips on the paint on the lip). The only cars you'll see that are really rusty are probably those that have sustained some damage on their body panels and haven't been repaired so paint fails, and rust just starts to form from any metal there.
@@cloudy4872 My dad's little 1990 Nissan pickup got up to around 300,000 miles. It's whole body was rusting apart, but its engine never burned a drop of oil!
My ''James'' did the thing where he put the whole of our 1.8t 20v head on a piece of glass that was covered in wet sandpaper, then proceeded to gently slide the whole head around until it was nice and flat. The damn thing is still red-lining after 4000km without a drop of oil anywhere. Feels good.
Those six-cylinder Falcons have always been legends. In 1990, twenty-year-old me bought a 1972 XA Falcon sedan with the pre-crossflow 250 CID six. Column auto, front bench seat. It was like driving around in your lounge-room. Loved it.
The old H-series with the Red 202 were basically the classic as well as the 250's for most Aussies in the 70's and 80's. That was back in the day when you didn't need a 4wd to drive on an unsealed road, you just trusted she'll be right and sent it.
oh my god, the version of sync that car runs is possibly one of the nuggetiest pieces of software i’ve ever had the displeasure of using. here’s just a few of the joys it’s genuinely presented me with over the years: • bluetooth occasionally doesn’t send audio (still plays the tracks, just no sound). only fix is turning your phone’s bluetooth off and back on • upon playing an album, you have to pause on your phone at the start and then press play. if you don’t, it will auto-skip every song after a random amount of time • it’ll sometimes get confused when switching menus and get stuck trying to load things. you’ll have to switch to a different menu and back to the one you want for it to load. unless it’s like, *STUCK* stuck. then you’ll have to turn the engine off, open your door, wait a couple seconds, blow in the cartridge, then turn the engine back on (and no, a hard-reset via the console doesn’t reliably work in those cases) • so like this one time, it was so cold out that the clock froze. the digital clock. froze. i had to run the car for 10 minutes, by which point the clock had slowly sped up to eight minutes ahead • oh yeah, the clock runs fast
The best way to use the falcons infotainment center is to buy one of the aerpro kits to install a single DIN underneath, and bypass all the stereo duties to it, leaving the big screen to only exist for air-con controls. This works so well because the $5 sony headunit from 2001 you found at a garage sale with visible rust on it is STILL better in literally every single way than the factory ford trash.
@@bandombeviews6035 you can try asking local ford dealers if they will do upgrades, or you can try using ford fusion upgrade kits from online. They are drop in replacements most times but you’d have to research
@@OOZ662 truly a shame LPG stations are disappearing over there. If someone tried to take away LPG from Baltics or Poland, riots would occour. It is like magic stuff that makes your car run cheaper than electric.
@@udenszirnis1644 it's insane, growing up in the 90s LPG was super popular in Australia and a lot of people converted their vehicles to LPG because it was cheaper. All taxis used it and I think buses. But the last decade it's just disappeared. The craziest thing is, we're the world's second biggest exporter of gas! We just get a terrible deal on it locally due to government and corporate corruption screwing us over.
Fun fact No matter how normal sized that barra looks in that engine bay remember ITS FORKING ENORMOUS Its just BIG A friend of mine wanted to swap one into his bmw and half the engine was sticking out the bonnet lol
you probably would have but your unions didn’t like it, not that it matters now though since most of your manufacturers have moved production overseas/borders

3:04 That is so refreshing to hear!! haha The amount of people who hear a noise or have an issue and just KEEEEEP trying to drive it, making the issue 1000X worse is amazing!
It's simple, they know it's bad, and they probably can't afford to get it fixed, but then also they have no choice but to drive it anyway because they live a distance away from work
2:01 this small detail of making the video smaller to make it less of a risk is another reason i love you lots man You are considerate abt everyone watching your videos and dont try to put anyone at danger. Honestly one of my favourite RU-vid Channels of all time, never ever stop.
Thats an issue with the SOHC (Single overhead cam) that was used prior to the Barra used in BA falcons onwards, usually with the barra they are pretty rare to have headgasket issues, usually front seal leaks and blown bushes plague these cars
@@ZachHellbender 15 years in a Ford dealership, never saw a blown gasket on a barra... pretty much everything else, but headgaskets are not a common issue on them.
Hey Wade, this injected eco-lpi is actually the least sad of the barras, it's the best non-turbo barra that Ford ever made! Sure they didn't paint the top like they did for the older LPG models, but they didn't paint most of the standard barra tops for the whole life of the engine. The plastic intake manifold is actually way better than the metal one, stops heat soak and has better flow, +10-20 kW better. And the reason why the compression test is so high is that the eco-lpi has a higher compression ratio of 12.0:1 (compared to 10.3:1 for the BF/FG Barra E-Gas engine). So the eco-lpi is the most powerful naturally aspirated barra from factory
Every NA barra came with the greytop, Green is the lpg motor, red for turbo, blue for fpv, black for turbo territory but in late fg2 and fgx the lpg motors started just getting the greytop from the NA, the turbo still got red and the sprint model got black
Literally everywhere else in the world got cooler cars and better engines than we got here in the States. If they sold this in the US, I'm convinced it'd be Ford's #1 best seller. Then can you imagine a TT barra instead of the 3.5 ecoboost in the trucks? Instantly, and immediately, a legend it'd be.
That's assuming Americans even want sedan cars. Well, the Chevy SS (a rebadged Holden VF Commodore SSV) didn't sell particularly well in the US, and GM only begrudgingly sold them in order to get a tax break from the Australian government. Both the Falcon and Commodore have far too subdued and conservative looks for Americans. Remember the short-lived Pontiac GTO revival? Another Australian import where I remember there were American complaints that it looked like a "Japanese bubble car".
Of course the wet cylinder had the highest compression, it has fluid of some kind (incompressible) taking up room in the cylinder, essentially making it smaller.
i'm not a ford fan (gm girl til i die) but these videos are definitely making me appreciate the Aussie fords. honestly kinda makes me wish we had them in the US, if only just so i could see them go by on the street
@@monkeyprojects129 three words: Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac. all of my favorite cars and trucks were manufactured by GM, so maybe not a GM fan per say, but by association
I'm about to re-skill as a 40 year old and go study to be a diesel mechanic and I like to think this channel at least helped contribute to that decision (and having a mechanic for an old man helps). I loved my old BA Falcon :')
That car is totally a Ford product. It's like a Fusion and a Mustang had a baby! That interior is 100% Fusion though.... But those speeds are quite 'Stangy. Visually, the body is definitely the Fusion as a base while the headlights are from the newer generation Mustangs. Kinda cool to see how they made something unique for Australia. Pretty sweet car!
You guy are probably one of the best, if not the best fixer-upper car channels that exist. I love your explanations, your footage and commentary, and the old timey music you use in the background. Thanks for what you do mate
I love seeing anything with a Barra in it, or any straight 6 really. Used to have a 74 f100 with the 4th gen 4.9L i6 and I loved that thing, it sounded like a tractor and was basically bulletproof. These more modern ones always remind me of it
6:11 just figured I would point out, that high compression either means that it's fine, or that the rings are clogged and it's getting abnormally high compression..
Just gonna say as a recently qualified mechanic I'm very surprised how easy head gasket jobs are, unbolt the thing, get an old mate to machine the thing, clean the surfaces of the thing and then rebolt the thing with a special wrench, not much to it
As a previous mechanic, you obviously haven't got a bad one yet... some cars its easier to take the whole motor out to do the job than try and do it in-car...
@SmileyTom666 I've done a few. Worst was a v6 diesel d40 navara, engine is crammed in there and just about everything has to be stripped off it to even remove it, about a day and a half in just taking the motor out. That was a prick of a Job, by far the easiest was a Hyundai getz, had the head off in an hour and a half. Barras are easy though, not much in the way, everything is either a 10mm, 12mm, 5mm Allen or a 14mm and she's out. Not saying it's an easy job for someone with little experience or that they're all easy just that I was surprised how easy they are compared to how everyone makes it sound
Love it Wade! I'm a big Ford guy and love seeing a good FGX on the channel! True workhorses those cars. I have a 2015 FGX XR8 and I love the thing, such, such a great cruiser.
The Australian straight 6s will do heads due to the alloy head and iron block expanding at different rates and coolant braking down quickly. But when there running the big sixers are so smooth and torquie.
There's a ton of engines with iron blocks and aluminium heads that don't have significant issues. While the different heat expansion is a problem it's a problem that can be (and has been) engineered around And then you have the Triumph V8 where the differing expansion rates cause the block and head to warp due to terribly designed head studs. What an engine
God I miss my 05 BA MKii XR6. Lightning Strike silver, had it lowered slightly with a big chonkin' exhaust on it, huge 15" sub in the back - thing was 100% a teenager's dream car lol, even had underglow and all the extra LEDs in the car. I upgraded the headunit with the one from the higher trim with the colour screen that I got from the local wreckers for $50 after pulling it out myself. That thing was just a cruising dream - set the speed and it would just drive itself for hours. Had to get rid of it because fuel prices were insane and the big ol Barra was not exactly a light sipper.
It's funny, I'm jealous of the fuel economy Barras get. I'm dealing with an AMC 4.0 in a box (Jeep Cherokee). Considered putting one in, more power and more economy without reduced reliability.
james must have quite possibly the best job in the world. he gets paid (probably very well) to sit around and work on fun cars all day. probably little to no stress since he doesnt have a customer to please or a quota to hit really
Is just sad we never got aussie goodness in europe. Love those falcons, the best ones are wagon. Those still had leaf spring in the rear to like 2010. I have '89 caprice wagon body on frame sucker with leaf springs in the back, but you now is to old to be regular daily driver but 2010 car with leaf springs....MAN I JUST CAN'T. Supers cars don't get me excited but those aussie cars does. I wish we have those
Collision investigation nerd here 👋 as a point about the g-forces it might actually only be measuring the coefficient of friction between the tyres and the road. If you do the tests at different temperatures, slightly damp etc you can get a massive difference. The reason i say is a standard road in the UK is roughly 0.7g-0.8g capable (tested via abs braking) so its not unreasonable that you can increase all those performance results depending on where and when you do the pull. Also, fucking ay mate. Love all the channels, keep it up (as a pom I wont say that again I promise 😂).
Had totally forgotten James came to Japan. Hope you enjoyed your trip. Again, shame it wasn’t a month early, you could have even watched some of the Gundam dismantling in Yokohama if you had :
Barra wants fresh seals, shaved head and deck, high comp slugs, appropriate cam grind, a positive displacement blower, and a fancy ECU to control it. All the compression for that straight injected LPG goodness. LPG + High Compression = WHEEEEE
I really do love to see Aussie cars being good. i love local vehicles actually being enjoyed by the people who LIVE THERE. i personally am a big enjoyer of American v8 Sedands and coupes as well as a good Turboed dodge v6 (wha ti drive). you guys down in Australia deserve better than the ass end of a globalized car market that you got.
