Chris, I can't thank you enough for this video. I was so overwhelmed by this project and I put it off for months. I'm headed out to the garage with supreme confidence now. You are doing all of us OBS guys a huge favor with this quality of video. Thank you
I was just going to replace the motor for my 89 , because the window won't go down but watching this video make me realize that I'm going to need more than 3 beer so heading to 7/11.
Just found you & it seems like you're my new hero. I'm usually my own mechanic on my '94 5.8c XLT. At 55, single & tight budget this girl appreciates you more than you know. Thank you from NW PA
Thank you so much man. I bought a 95 off of a guy who decided to pull the tailgate apart and didn’t even leave the screws for me where he took it all apart, but I could not figure out what the defrost plug was going to and I was stressing thinking that something was disconnected in my window motor wasn’t gonna work after replacing it lol. I appreciate the time you took to explain everything, I will probably be looking at some of your videos as I go through this thing! Subscribed
Thank you for being literally the only review on how to do this that isn’t just somebody holding a beer talking for two minutes about a job that is already done with no walk-through whatsoever
BEST video out there on this project! Been waiting on this video as I'm going to tackle mine soon and rebuild everything! Thanks for the video! Can't wait for part two!
"I dont want to be that guy who snaps his fingers and it is finished." Best quote on YT!! Thanks for being thorough in your videos!! Chris is the cylinder for the back door the same cylinder used for the driver and passenger doors. i bought a set of 3 door cylinders and ignition cylinder all keyed the same. I have not been able to find info on this but walla Chris does a video! Keep up the great work!!
This is really helpful! Almost no on shoes videos this detailed. Although I’d like to see you show us how to also remove the tailgate latches, seems there’s nothing on how to remove those on the internet
I need the defroster glass(the button in dash still works), the last owner replaced the rear glass with a nondefroster one(i live in UT and a defroster would be nice).
Love your videos. I need to order the rear tail gate key switch, for making the glass up and down. (Lock Macktism, key switch, and wiring harness). I have a 1979 ford bronco. The I have now only one button works. So I have to reverse the wires, from the bronco power source, to make the window, go up or down. Thankyou. Linda
Excellent video! Can't wait for part two....almost every part of my 1985 tailgate window components has been replaced with the exception of the side channels and the slides where the window attaches.....new motorcraft motor, new regulator, new felts, new glass, etc. It still doesn't want to go up and down, as it binds in the middle of its travel. Once it gets past the mid point, up or down, it moves better, but it requires assistance. When the tailgate is up, you can see that when it goes up, it isn't following the path of the channel in the hard top, it is tilted further forward, toward the inside of the vehicle. I have to get in the back of the Bronco and apply outward pressure for the window to close. I am also wondering if the motor could be wired through a relay so that it gets full voltage? Anyhow, great video! Can't wait for more.....
I definitely need a few things for my tailgate. Picked my Uncles 93 Bronco that I grew up with and it has a lot of fond memories. The complete tailgate is rusted through and I can’t even get the window down. How does one do that when it is frozen and how does one purchase parts from you?
Amazing video! You realize the Great Deed you're doing making it so easier to get these older Broncos back on the road again, all functional. The Best!
I really enjoyed your and understood very clear on the 3-part video on the tailgate. However, you didn't show or made mention whether or not you had or could have a problem with the removal of the hinge bolts at the tailgate bottom and should it be sprayed with JB penetrating catalyst and how long are these 3-14mm bolts?
Thanks! Removing those bolts is usually a big pain due to the corrosion at the bottom of the tailgate. Up in Michigan it’s not an issue because they just tear right out. Due to the rot. I would soak them for a couple days. And then slowly work them back-and-forth until they break free.
Do these instructions also apply to the 2nd gen bronco (78-79)? I'm about to rebuild my tailgate and am curious if there are any differences in the procedure. Thanks!
If I disconnect that safety switch like you did at 16:50 for the tailgate latch. Will i then be able to move the window whenever? Or do I have to wire it a certain way?
It’s covered. And you can buy them new at Jeff’s Bronco Graceyard. Part number is in video description. Click on title. Then click more. Links for everything!! Part 2 or 3
Never had that exact problem with my 82, when it was hot outside it wouldn't work, cooled down somewhat and it would work? Thought it was dash switch, i unplugged it and jumped power, reversing polarity and it worked but then again it had cooled off by then, Guessing dash switch is ok, gonna plug it back in and try it. motor which had been fine and oiled up after replacing rubber bushing stops or regulator didn't like heat. Need to sell it and get my old 302 shortblock out of it. My outside switch quit yrs ago. There should be a crank on these pricks!
I have a 1992 bronco and need to go through the whole tailgate. I’ve been doing auto glass for almost 30 years. I would like to know what you have available for the tailgate available to purchase. I have a new heated glass and the motor. I need everything else.
I sell used regulators, latches and harnesses for the tailgates. Most other parts I source from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard. In part 2, of the TG video there are links in the description to purchase all the components.
Thank you for the kind reply, I will check it out,for the FB market that will be difficult for me since I am not on the USA, but living on the Caribbean island of Aruba, have a nice day.
I am looking forward to your videos. I am reviving my '88 302 Bronco (bought him new) so I can get him back on the beach this summer. I have been pondering a sand blaster. Is there a small one that you might recommend?
Thanks. Great fun making them. It depends on the job at hand. Are you thinking a cabinet? (Avoid HF like the plague) or a pressurized vessel type system? I’d avoid a gravity feed.
@@BroncosandPartsGarage I was thinking about a cabinet, but I don't have a ton of room in my garage. It will be nice to touch up rusty parts and then rust treat as I go. I did try a ultrasonic cleaner at HF. It was a toy....
@@BroncosandPartsGarage I wasn't clear on my question. Does the actual electric up down switch that the cylinder sits in unplug from the wiring harness so that you can plug in a replacement or is it hard wired to the harness? Thanks
It’s a 1996. All the links are in video description. Or call Jeff’s Bronco Graveyard. I also sell used regulators. If yours is rusty they can be cleaned. A little 3m pad and wd40
@@BroncosandPartsGarage I'll try WD40, but when I push the button on my dashboard to roll the window up and down, I don't even hear anything, so I'm not completely sure if it's a rusty regulator, but I'll try before buying a new one. thanks for the suggestion!
Does anyone know how to move the tailgate up if it’s in the stuck down position? When I go to jump the motor, it doesn’t move the window at all. So I can’t change the motor.
Hey there Cris, I hope everything is going well. Do you still have any of them key switch assembly replacements? I got a Ford Bronco '92 which I recently adquired and I'm having issues with that part
Not really. Both of my 96 broncos have that as well. If it lays flat, you really cannot get your fingers behind it when your inspection plate and carpet panel are in place….
@@BroncosandPartsGarage thanks, does the shell come with the key hole already? Anyway to get one already put together? Only asking since I don’t have much space or tools in my apartment complex.
This video is quite useless for folks if the window motor is non op, and the window is stuck down? How do you disconnect the window from the track, especially on the driver side (harness is in the way). And how do you get to the fourth bolt in that holds the window regulator to gate?
Thanks for the inquiry. I’ve yet to see a completely burned up motor. That said, the glass tracks can still be unbolted from the outside of the tailgate. And the glass will have some wiggle room due to the ability to bend the regulator arms a bit. Remove the two top seals, remove glass from regulator and then use a step drill to drill thru regulator plate to access removal bolts. Then email me for a used regulator. Where there is will, there is a way. Or break glass and replace for $100
Awesome video series, thank you! You showed all the steps with one exception: please cut in a short about how to relieve the torsion bar tension safely. I appreciate you guys and all the work you put into this!
Thank you! The only way is to have someone close the tailgate as much as possible while another removes the two 11mm bolts. reverse for installation. if your doing it alone, you need to be careful and hold a towel over the body bracket to contain it when it goes flying. BE CAREFUL
Hey man, had to hit this up again because I finally got a new tailgate shell that I’m going to get painted and swap everything out. However, I think my tailgate motor isnt working and the window is in the down position(no response from the key or the switch and I dont hear the motor working).I know you said I can Hotwire it to a battery, but what if the motor is bad? I’m not sure but I’m just looking for some ideas on how to work on this.
I love the channel. I have a 1996 Bronco with a tailgate that has metal separating at the top right corner. The body shop i took it to (Maaco) is not comfortable welding it and repainting; they say they don’t have the equipment to do it. This was a California Bronco for most of its life, so everything else on the tailgate is fine - I’ve replaced all the internals using your guidance and parts supplier referrals. I found a replacement tailgate that will cost $800, which is more than I believe the weld should cost. As well, the final look of a welded repair is probably fine relative to the value the new door brings. How do I you suggest I could guide the body shop on how to weld it properly? Or is there a better way to get this done, such as metal shop or something?
Thanks for watching!! I’m not a welder unfortunately. If the tg is splitting, especially on the passenger side, welding it may not be a long term solution. What cause it to crack will just move to a new location. Are you using a spare tire mount?
@@BroncosandPartsGarage thank you for responding! yes sir the tire mount is likely to be the problem. I was able to find someone to weld it and it looks like it’ll get me through the paint job - hopefully will last another 27yrs :)
Hi. My window is stuck in the down position. The female plug for the motor is below the glass and I cant reach it. Any suggestions to get the window rolled up without access to the female connector for the window motor?
You could simply remove the motor, have someone hold the glass in the upright position and reinstall a new motor. It’s very simple. 3 screws. The plug should be u set the speaker hold though.
@BroncosandPartsGarage Thank you. Only problem I have is that the motor is below the glass and I dont have access to it. If I remove the 11 mm bolts, would I be able to slide the glass out?
@@BroncosandPartsGarage thankyou! Also might be a dumb question but what would be my best option to use to get my window jogged up with the battery the wire part kinda confused me
Awesome video! Got my rear window operating again after bypassing the 'safety' switch! I do have the 'help' it when going up for about the mid 3rd of travel. Is it a good assumption that this is probably due to gummed up horizontals tracks & slides? is D6AZ-5323240-A "Window Regulator Roller" the replacement part for these 2 nylon slides?
That's pretty rusted up! Is that typical of the older Brinco's? This video wasn't Out when I was working on my 89. My brother thinks I'm a genius but its cause of guys like you sharing knowledge and experience. The old school of hard knocks is a mean way to learn! Thanks!
Great video! Is the dash-mounted switch a reverse polarity design? Looking at a custom made dash switch for an '85 Bronco. OEM switches seem to be out of production. Thank you.
Thank you. I know the third generation bronco uses a different switch than the fifth generation is that I’m used to. So I can’t answer that accurately. Please try posting the question in the broncos and parts Garage Facebook group if you haven’t already joined
Great video, I have no tail gate key and my Dash switch does not seem to work. I have not yet checked the fuse ( that is next) if I have power can I just the switch and get the window down suggestions?
I can’t believe this, I’ve had this on my iPad haven’t watched it yet and today my back window isn’t working right. I did get it closed but we’ll see if I can get it down to work on it.
Just picked up an 86 Bronco yesterday. The rear glass was stuck mid-way and this was a super helpful guid to everything going on back there. Looking forward to part 2.
Excellent video, Chris. I may advise caution when using a cordless impact on the screws that secure the window. I’ve seen the vibration shatter the glass in some instances. Hope this helps someone. Keep up the good work, Chris!!
Hello Chris. thank you from Arizona, Excellent videos. My 1989 Bronco, The tail gate goes up and down straight making a clanking sound mid travel from the driver's side, any suggestions ? I am guessing rollers and tracks.
