Have a dull, dingy, scratched up instrument cluster/speedometer pod? In this video I show you how to remove it, take it apart, polish it up, and reinstall it. This video is also a set up for some future videos including how to re-solder the connections on the back to fix the dim/flickering/out odometer problem that plagues so many 2006-2011 Ford Crown Victorias and for installing a double DIN stereo with it off the vehicle.
I also show you how to adjust your PRND21 indicator to get it lined up.
plastic polish options:

Those bolts on the bottom of the column and the one that holds the indicator cable retainer are 5.5 mm. Ford used all metric bolts in assembling these vehicles as they were built in Canada. I've had to go through this with my 08 P71 while changing out the dashboard itself.
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 10 месяцев назад
yeah, I think I figured out they were metric and 5.5mm once I got a fancier set of sockets that included 5.5mm. Crazy to think they could have used 5mm or 6mm but somehow chose 5.5mm

I would have to take mine one step further and pop the gauges separate from the circuit board so I can re solder the LED display. Mine has the blackout mode display. Meaning you only get to see your mileage when it's 40 degrees below zero in the middle of winter or a hundred and twenty in the middle of summer. The soldered joints get bad on this display across the brand.
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 5 лет назад
That's actually the reason I removed it... I did re-solder, that's coming up in another video. I just feared that this video was already getting "too long" even with all the editing I did (I had several hours of raw footage!)
@crsuperman1
@crsuperman1 5 лет назад
@@WJHandyDad I can't wait to see how you did it!!!!! I would love to see how many miles I have put on my vic since last JAN-Feb 2018, the last time it was so cold that the LEDs were visible. In Iowa, finding extreme cold in the winter is not that hard.. -20 or colder and the dash odometer is bright as can be.
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 5 лет назад
spoiler alert - you don't have to do any real disassembly to fix the soldering... I did too much disassembly on mine. But the soldering process is actually very easy once you remove the pod like I did in this video.

I have a tech question I have a 2006 CVPI and whenever I go over 60mph hard soft medium driving the wrench light kicks on and puts up in limp mode now I’ve replaced the throttle body and the electronic pedal and it still does it but driving under 60 nothing happens drives like normal only other thing is I have a airbag code 19 and 5 beeps aka drivers side and a P0581 Cruise multi-function A circuit High would that cause it to do that and put the car in limp mode every time? That should just be the clock spring though. I had a theory maybe rear ABS wheel speed sensors I replaced them and still does it. And my brake and abs lamps are lit which is most likely the ABS control module would that throw it into limp mode? I’m lost
@hullinger
@hullinger 5 лет назад
Hey man, that was really good AND really timely too. I want to due the same with my cluster as well as inspect the solder points for my dim odometer. Oh, did you mess up the speedometer calibration when you spun the needle? Curious if it snaps back into correct position when it's powered up again or if you have to reposition it during reassembly. -Chris
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 5 лет назад
I made the mistake of totally disassembling mine when I did the soldering. In my solder video I'll show how to solder without disassembling so it shouldn't affect the gauges. But right now my speedo is showing about 2mph faster than I'm going, the tach is about 200rpm too slow, and the fuel gauge is just slightly high... and yes I've done the factory test thing and it didn't reset them, so I'm gonna have to pull the needles again or just live with it.

Thanks for the video Handy, cluster hasn't been telling me my speed or rpms lately, both stay on 0. lights all work though, but it throws just about every dash light when it isn't functioning properly. It does work every once in a while too and no warning lights or engine codes are on when it is functioning. oddly enough I can't use my OBD2 Scanner when the dash cluster isn't working properly. It will say bad connection. Kind of makes me want to just plug in my other PCM/ECU or whatever its called and see how that goes first.

WJ, just to confirm in the 2011 cvpi the backlight (green) on the dashboard goes with the same 194bulb that goes into the older cpis, right? Mine are so weak that I was thinking of replacing them by LED ones. I did this to the AC panel and looks amazing
@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 3 года назад
no, the newer (2006-up?) don't have regular bulbs, they have little LED's soldered in. A much more major job than on the old ones that changed out just like the climate controls

WJ Handy Dad After I posted that comment I found it, it was pretty burnt and even burnt the tube it seats in. I went out to various stores and ended up at our local radio shack and they had that type of bulb but some dude from out of town urgently bout their entire stock. Then they resorted to fabricating one by using another kit in store and as it turns out it worked! Now I just gotta see how well it works at night.

Then a few weeks later intermittently the gauge cluster all together stopped working. Then yesterday it completely gave out, would this be related to the crappy soldering points, or more towards the connection to the wiring harness connection(s)?

@WJHandyDad
@WJHandyDad 2 года назад
depends if you are good with soldering circuit boards or not. Most of the time it's just bad solder joints that make these fail, but sometimes you have to replace component(s). If you aren't comfortable partially disassembling and soldering, you are better off sending it to some place like Circuit Board Medics.

don't know if I qualify as that but I'll try to help. When you remove it, turn it to the low point. Before reinstalling, look at my examples to see approximately where they should be (I can send photos of mine if you need). When reinstalling it, start higher than it's supposed to be, and when about halfway installed turn it down to the end point while pressing it down. You should get it within 1-2mph at that point. Before you completely reinstall the instrument cluster test it and see if you need to re-do it. Good luck and thanks for being a loyal subscriber!

@DocM.
@DocM. Год назад
@Me and My Shadow I did try super glue! Didn't think of the baking powder or razor blade thats a great idea. I don't know if it would have mattered, it wasn't a clean break in half, there was a good triangular chunk missing. And once the glue dried, even the slightest difference in shape made it impossible to function as a screw rotator, and would break again anyway. Even tried very intricate ways to reinforce it like using very thin soda can aluminum inside the screw tube. Ultimately I went to a junk yard to get a new part, less than $15. Although you may pay more or less depending on who is the cashier and your haggling. Depending on the year of car you can get this exact piece from a Mercury Grand Marquis, I can't remember now if I got mine from a Vic or a Grand Marquis now because I will warn you it can take some time especially if you break it trying to remove it from another car like I did! Little bastard is super fragile and it's remarkable how that tiny cheap plastic screw can hold up at all without breaking especially when you watch how much that cable and screw move EVERY time you put in gear and change gears!!! Remove dash covers around steering wheel, 8 screws, remove the steering wheel's jacket/cover, 3 screws, CAREFULLY take the red cable loop off its pin and CAREFULLY unscrew the smaller screw holding the plastic part to the gear shifter (that's the scariest part 😂 and re installing) then remove the 4 odometer screws so you can get in between the odometer layers/faces to pinch and ultimately remove the gear shift needle and cable assembly. I hope that made sense, it does to me since I spent so long and did it so many times! 😂
