Ford dealership overfilled the oil on my F-150. First oil change at this establishment.

So, after draining the oil and getting it down to the correct level, it ended up being just shy of one full quart. what do you think? Too much of an oversight to let slide, or am I making a bigger deal of this than I should?

That's why I change my own oil. I'm OCD like that too.

Check my oil after every oil change. Whether it was the dealership or me changing it. 👊

Yup check the ground where it was parked for leaks too

In addition to what you said, excessive oil fill like that can cause excessive crankcase pressure that will result in leaks. Even more excessive oil can also result in piston slap.

Nice catch Professor B!💪🏽 Unfortunately, you cannot trust anyone’s work when it comes to your car! (Except you B, we can trust you😂) Thanks for the update!

A couple of things I can add is that: - On some engines it's very important to remove the dipstick then let them sit for At Least 3 minutes. This allows the splashed oil to return to the pan so you can get an accurate reading. Otherwise there will be trace amounts of oil showing up higher on the dipstick giving an incorrect reading. - Always look at both sides of the dipstick. If one side reads lower that is going to be closer to the correct amount. - Sometimes you don't want to trust the reading and you insert the dipstick again. Well on some engines taking a second quick reading may be ok but for me I've found it doesn't work. That's because the oil on the dipstick has now been smeared further up the tube giving an inaccurate reading. You have to once again wait for the smeared oil to drain back down into the pan. It pretty easy and rudimentary for most gearheads but yet there's some people that get it wrong or simply don't care when they see it has oil.

I know someone that found their oil with 12 quarts in it. The tech drained the transmission fluid, then filled the oil up with 6 more quarts. Needless to say, they discovered it when they drove a couple of blocks and the transmission was slipping like crazy. I wouldn’t move the car until I checked the fluid. Sad times.

As long as I’m able to do them myself, I will. I’ve had numerous issues with just taking it for service!!! People don’t care for other people’s stuff.

You're correct in your thought process. An overfill can create problems as others mention. I hate letting someone work on my car anymore. They usually damage something like plastic parts or scratches to the finish. Both lower the value of your vehicle and 9 out of 10 times they will deny they did it. Hardly anybody will take responsibility for anything they did wrong anymore. Society in decay.

I took my 6.1 hemi to the dealer and they overfilled it a quart. I bought a Mityvac to suck it out. I changed my 6.4 hemi myself last week

Don’t trust anyone with an oil change unless you can watch them. I have worked on several cars lately that had the oil change sticker on the window, but the oil was never changed. And one of them was a dealer. Especially if it’s the so called “free” oil change. Times have changed in a very negative way.

I always to my own service but I had coupons to burn from when I bought my 2023 in January. I noticed on the invoice when I got home they charged me for 9 quarts. Pulled the dip stick and same issue as you. I ended up just draining it myself after calling the dealer and they tried telling me they still took 8.8 quarts.

A few years ago I got lazy and brought my Mustang Ecoboost to the dealer for an oil change, after 5000 miles I decided to do the next oil change myself and found out they had put the oil capacity of a Mustang GT.

well with todays oil consumption that manufactures say are acceptable than maybe that little overfill might be advantageous. I do agree shotty work not putting it between the lines. On another not overfill may cause the oil burning issues as mentioned, however I'd take a slight overfill as opposed to an underfill. Not this case but the manufacturer (Ford) does have some important guidelines on checking oil levels such as the early 2.7 ecoboosts and what not. I hear ya, I agree. Next time at the dealer just ask for the extra quart that will probably be needed 3k later.

Now let me tell you that if you had a service at another shop not at a dealer and THEY over filled with oil and the dealer found out THEY WOULD VOID WARRANTY IN THAT ENGINE. Bullshit isnt it

Had this happen as well on my 2017...one of the first oil changes. They denied it, despite me bringing them 7 Quarts of oil that I took out of the sump (1 Qt higher than book says). They gave me my money back, but continued to deny.

Was the oil level checked on a hot engine and after waiting 5 mins after, as suggested by most manifacturers??? If checked cold would look something like that

Even with these quick stop oil places fast in fast out not my cup of tea. Sell you everything under sun but quality I am not convinced. They use these dial in oil filling guns maybe never get calibrated some fill less some fill more. But the messed up part is lazy not verifying thinking that filler is correct. That is my take on it also I am OCD for sure as I had my F150 overfilled before so never again. Will I use these places. I vote no

You know, I thought about that. But a couple of things would inhibit that. First of all is time. To go back and forth with the dealership like that, I just don't have the time for it.Two I would simply rather do it myself and know that it's done right.
