Ford E350 Front Coil Spring Change; Ride Height Adjustment

Replacing the Front Coil Springs with heavier duty diesel springs in effort to raise the front of the van. This was done to correct squatting in the front end that is a result of worn components, weight in the rear, changing tire sizes, etc. Compatibility charts say the diesel springs won't work on Triton V8 applications, this proves that wrong.

You'll have no issues with this. I've been changing out the factory coil springs for the F550 coil springs on my Super Duty's for years now. It helps when using it for plowing, in that it carries that extra 1000# worth of plow weight well. The only thing you might need to do which is a 5 minute job is adjust your steering wheel by turning the adjustment under the front of the truck/van.

That's good to know, I'm gonna need something even stronger. The front weighs about 4000, and the rear 6000 on the Extended Cargo. I will keep this in mind when I add a 1000 pound custom, welded, wraparound guard and bumper. And a 12000 pound Warren Winch. Thanks again for the info. F550 huh....

Your welcome. If you didn't hear this in the video, the diesel springs actually helped with the Camber angle problem I had as a result of changing the tire and rim size. It no longer pulls to the left like it used to and it steers easier (but not to the point of oversteering). I got a small 1/2 to 3/4 inch front lift out of it. If the springs wear and cause the front end to dip low again, I'll post an update comment.

what's the rule of thumb on knowing if the spring is gonna hit you in the face or not? Just by how easy it waggles with the screw driver? I'm sittin here with 1998 E150 shock off... jack under that same bolt as you under the spring... then dropped the jack so now seems like all tension is being taken by the sway bar... but I don't know how much tension is there. Shaking the shock and it does not seem loose. seems like I ought to start over and take the sway bar out first and then I would know when there is not tension for sure.
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284 3 месяца назад
Yeah, I suppose you could pull the sway bar loose. I guess there would be no guarantees. The general consensus should be that if the spring can be moved by hand, or by foot, or by medium hammer taps in combination with not being too compressed (meaning an entire coil, one revoulution, not more than an inch or two from a factory spring), it should be safe to take out any way you can without a spring compressor or safety chains. If it's gotta give less than an inch from overall factory length, then it doesn't have enough tension left to cause any damage or even move out of its own way. I say if it makes people comfortable, tie a rope or a chain around it under the truck so it can only go up or down, not out.

Great video very helpful. What kind of wheels you have? Thx pat
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284 3 года назад
The wheels are Continental VancoFourSeason Tires from Europe. 285/65/R16 on a 10 inch Black Rock Rim for the rear tires. 30 1/2 inches tall and 11 1/2 inches of rubber on the ground. The front tires are 245/75/R16 on an 8 inch rim of VancoFourSeason also. 30 inches tall, and about 8 inches of rubber on the ground. The 1-ton van rear ends are 3 inches shorter than the front ends. I corrected this by adding a 16x10 inch rim with a 4.25 inch backspacing. The front rims are 16x8 inch Cragar Soft 8 black, same style as the Black Rock, with a 4.5 inch backspacing. Now the stance is even front and rear. Giving me maximum roll control, and the Super Single rear tires are rated at 4100 pounds each. Giving me the ability for maximum load capacity and tongue weight. I called Black Rock to verify that the rims themselves have been tested to hold up to 5000 pounds each, even tough they have various advertisements. Standard Cragar center caps with raised Ford logos and 2 inch deep stainless steel 16 inch Chevy Impala trim rings. Very effective in the rain.

Good video guys but I have question if put the new coil springs those rides better no bumpy rides?
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284 3 года назад
The ride was definitely better. The ride is still a little bumpy, but it's a work van, a little bit of a bumpy ride ain't that bad. What improved though and keeps to this day, is the ride height and its profile when looked at from the side. This in turn helped to ease up the steering a bit, and adjusted the camber just a tad bit, as well as give a smoother overall ride up front. Definitely not as stiff as I thought for a diesel spring on a 5.4l gas engine. I expected much worse.

How much height did you get with the diesel coil springs ? I have a e350 with rubbing tires issue and getting a lift kit for those vans are kind of expensive
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284 7 месяцев назад
I got about an inch. But the lift wasn't the most beneficial thing, it was the ride height under a load. It cut down on sag and wheel chop. And that's just what I needed. It's still like that today. Same springs still holding up.

im getting ready to tackle this job on my 2001 e250 with a 5.4. I have a shitload of negative camber and i keep eating up both front tires on the inside edges. And the ball joints are shot to shit also which im also gonna replace..The question i have is will HD coil springs fix my negative camber issues without using offset camber bushings??
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely.... Even new standard springs would fix a lot of sag issues, camber, etc. I would personally go after changing the Twin I Beam bushings. I'd use polyurethane bushings and then rubber for every other bushing to keep a smooth ride. The I Beam Bushings and the springs are the number one reason for the camber slouch. The ball joints contribute, but not as much as the other two components.

@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284

Why a spring compresssor on an E-Series? I've never had to use one so far. The closest I came to using a comressor was on a B-Series dodge van. And that was only after I put B350 springs on a B250 to get a 5 inch lift. I guess if you're dealing with all that rust, it changes the game.

I don't know about the F-Series/E-series interchange. I know the front end is different between the F and the E. Everybody's trying to use CC880s. They're too weak for a one ton. The best way to find out is to cross reference any part numbers that interchange between '96 F250 and any year E-Series. I would start on Moog's website, or Ford Parts Giant. It's possible...

@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284
@shadetreeautomotiveenthusi1284 3 года назад
They will fit. But they'll be stiff and they'll change the ride height between an inch to 2 inches. The heavy duty spring for your 150 is the CC81370, which also fits E250s and E350s with the gasoline engines. This tells you one thing. All mounting procedures, control arms, components, spring towers are the same on the 4th gen. Econolines. Out of all the springs, the 66s I installed in this video are made to support the most weight. When they say they don't fit, they mean the weight in the front end. They will fit. They'll have a different ride height and stiffness. A lot of people use Moog 880s on E150s to get 2-3 inches. But this only works out for E150s with engine weights at about 500 pounds. A 5.4l weighs 600 pounds, a 4.6l weighs about 500 pounds, the 4.2l weighs less. The V10 weighs 700 pounds, the diesel weighs close to 900 pounds. All of the springs mentioned are about the same installation height, except the 880s. They need to be pried in lightly, but they're softer. The only difference when referencing coil springs are how much they give when the vehicle weight bears down on them. If I had a 150, I wouldn't hesitate to try 66 diesel springs on it if I wanted to even out the ride height. But I gave you the other part number just in case you want a factory heavy duty spring that says it "fits" your '04. The only time I found that springs cause a problem is when you have an E-series with AdvanceTrac traction control, like the '07 models. If the spring is too stiff on an AdvanceTrac vehicle, it'll set off the traction control when you hit a bump on the road.
